Are you playing PvE by any chance? Because as somebody who plays solely PvE because of the trash community, I can tell you that Test Your Metal in PvE is the bane of any sane persons existence. Ubisoft simply suck at programming any sort of competent fighting AI and if you're playing with bots, you're basically consigned to a loss all except the rarest of times.

If playing PvAI, then really it's just a case of practice. The bots themselves have easily recognisable patterns and attack timings (Apollyon's slow-as-**** unblockable thrust, Gitgudmundrs charging top heavy, Valk goes for a zone attack 99% of the time), it's a case of playing until you have the patterns down. Play highly defensive, get your parry timings down right and when they're out of stamina, guard break, push them to the floor and smash them.

If not, just cheese the crappy AI. Do you have Highlander unlocked? The AI falls for the kick into caber toss EVERY SINGLE TIME and they also only parry like 1 out of 10 of his unblockables. Just spam Highlander and it's an easy win.

I'm in a weird place with Test Your Metal (or Metal Trials, if that's what it's called now). on one hand I usually have a pretty good time with it, but on the other, the bot difficulty seems to vary wildly from game to game.

In some games, my team and I can wipe the floor against bots that seem like they're almost braindead, standing there for seconds at a time in one gaurd leaving themselves open, not following up on grabs, throws or wallsplats, ect. Then in other games it feels like trying to fight against a hacker with an autoparry script!

The "hardest" bot seems to be Ranja, followed by Gudmundr and then Tozen, and then Appollyon. All the rest, though, seem to play pretty much identically to a regular bot of their class, it's just those four who seem to be difficult.

Ranja in particular I have difficulty with because her reaction time with soft-fients and mixups seems to be completely unnatural: If I try to react to her move, she'll change it, if I don't react to her move, she'll follow through, making the only really viable strategy against her to spam light attacks and pray. Gudmundr, meanwhile, just has too much damn health after about round 3, and giving him a shield after that point is excessive! I've had games where Gudmundr has still been at half health by the time all the other bots are dead and watch him hold up against four players attacking him for a solid minute because he just eats up attacks like they're nothing!

Tozen, meanwhile, has all those weird moves of his that make him an utter pain to fight. There's his wombo-combo which seems impossible to both dodge and parry making blocking or staggering it your only real option, and then Appolyon has a bunch of BS moves that work for a final campaign boss but not for a standard 1-on-1 fight. I mean her charged half-sword thrust charge thing tends to rip your healthbar in half even in the first round, and it tracks through dodges like it's nothing!

Attack tracking in general seems to be buggy, for that matter. Gudmundr in particular: I've had at least two instances where I've dodged literally behind him to avoid his big charged unblockable attack, only for him to snap around in a 180 and catch me in the head with it!

I love Test Your Metal and I wish it was a more consistent option because I enjoy good PvE content, but the bots do often feel unfair and unusual.

Spot on! And Ranja on the 4th round with buffs.. can be a pain at time she will parry everything! in some cases. its weird but I continue to play because its the best event they have done.

Since we're in the second part of TYM right now, I have one thing to say:

Gudmundir's unblockable top heavy combo attack is straight up BS. I have dodged directly behind him while doing it and he'll snap around 180 and hit me right in the head no matter what. The tracking on it is insane and stupid.

I have only been playing for a week and I found them challenging. but managed to beat em on my second day playing. I'm far from being good at this game
