Imagine...
... You're still a kid and your teacher ask you to do some complicated craft as homework. You don't know how to do it so your parents help you out by literally doing half of it. In the end feels more like you help them, rather than the opposite. So back to school your teacher asks if anyone "helped" you out... And just as your parents told you to do, you denied it. Unfortunatly this teacher isn't the kind type, so he makes you do the same craft right there... You freak out, of course. But then something happens. Even if you don't know how to do it, you still remember how your parents did the job and manage to succesfully craft it again, but this time there is a sense of satisfaction you didn't acomplished with your parent's assistance.
Ubisoft games in general, are the perfect example of this. Take for example Ghost Recon 2 last entries. I bought Wildlands a few years ago and after playing for a couple of hours, uninstalled it, because... There was no satisfaction at all. Then after several months I saw a gameplay from some youtube guys called "Force in Special Tactics" and it looked like they were playing a different game. So I called one of my friends and told him to play in extreme mode with no HUD assistance (At least not the combat assistance). And you know what? We loved it. That's because there is no joy on playing a situation where you just mark enemies and know where they are, where you should go, which enemies kill first and which avoid... And even if you miss some markings, your fancy minimap would tell you with clouds. Where's the fun? The game already did half of the job for me.
And now some will think: "Yeah, well. But you can change all that in the options menu". Fair enough. But the problem isn't you can change it, but the fact the game is telling you that's the right way to play by default, instead of challenging players to first try and experience the game as it should be... Without too much help.
And then Ghost Recon Breakpoint is announced and the gameplay reveal has nothing to do with all that! It's just like a more elaborated version of how the youtube guys I mentioned play, rather than the real experience by default you see after buying the game. There's no marking, no minimap and no assistance of any kind. Because even in a promotional video you know you can't transmit surprise and tension by using that mechanics. Imagine a horror game with minimap and marking, that would be hilarious.
So, after that exciting gameplay reveal, Ubi showed something different... They took example on The Division and make it an looter shooter with RPG progression and gear.... Something nobody asked for. And you know what's the best part of it? They took the business model... But the one thing The Division did well and Wildlands lack, which is a proper covering gameplay. They ignored it and deliver the worst possible automatic covering system, even worse than Wildlands. It doesn't work in many, many instances; Gets stuck on animation when you want to run away; Avoid activating in places you know it works; It doesn't let you peek in many covers you should be able, and the list goes on. In short: you delivered something nobody asked for, and do nothing about something the game really needed, if not making it worse.
After the RPG stuff was announce, I took the decition of not buying the game. I like The Division 2 and that's where I go if I want to play an RPG shooter. And if I want a more immersive open world shooter that doesn't fall into the sim genre, I play Wildlands. If you kill that, what's the point of playing Breakpoint? Enjoy recycled gameplay from The Division? No thanks.
10 months passed, and after an "immersive" patch and an offer from the Epic store, I decided to finally give it a try, played 60 hours on immersive mode and then I switched back to RPG. Not because I liked it, but because I don't think Immersive mode fits with how you originally planned the game. There are instances where the game is ridiculously hard because it was planned for an RPG character, and the reward system has been poorly planned, making me do stupid things like: doing a ******ed farm killing myself at some location, or go and kill behemoths at the beginning of the game... Just because you forgot to add metal parts into the freaking chests, making it eather boring or suicide to get some of the most basic game items to improve your weapons. Good job.
Now I'm playing with most of the immersive options, with the RPG stuff I hate activated... Things at least work that way. Others.... Doesn't.
So... After 10 months patching the game I'm scared thinking about which was the state of the game at release because...OMG the bugs...: 1st I had to check on the graphic options several times because the game woudn't stop crashing after playing for a while. DirectX 11 was hilarious because it crashed on the benchmark. Even after all tweaks, the game keeps crashing from time to time but wait... Cause the bugs doesn't end there.Crashing with my helicopter in an invisible lake IN THE AIR and then sink; Spawning my helicopter sinking in the air in another location; Missiles that vanish in the air or get permanently stuck at a point; Crashing against trees that I'm not even touching; Exploding in the middle of the air for no reason.... But wait, that's only the copter stuff: Alarm status triggering for no reason; Never ending alarm status; Character taking too long using the bandages; Getting stuck on animation while using bandages; Parachute not activating after jumping; Character falling down the map; Character insta-death after respawning; Weapon scopes aiming in slow motion; Enemies teleporting; Enemies watching you behind walls; Weapons ocationally not shooting while pressing the trigger..... And the list goes on.
And now talking about the game itself... What's with that awkward walking/running animation? And did nobody noticed the "moonwalker" characters do? Why on earth enemies can't climb ladders?! You can totally own them by climbing a building without any problem.... And why can't they do anything trying to find you if you shoot them from enough distance? Why can they only call reinforcements once? Why are there enemies each 100 meters? Sometimes you can even find 3 or 4 groups of enemies spawing near each other! I only use helicopters to travel cause enemies find you right away while using a land vehicle.....
And what happened to the NPC companions?! I can't use vehicles with weapons unless the pilot can use them! Am I suposed to play online to do that? Cause I have no intention to call my friend again to play this mess, not even with the friend pass...
And why can't I recycle/buy/sell by stacks? Do you have any idea how annoying is to do it one by one? And talking about stacking: why can't I swap map markers when 2 or 3 stack one over another? And for the love of god, add descriptions to all weapon stats so people can tell how each thing affects your weapon. Why do I have to check on the internet what is the difference between Mobility, handling and recoil?
I'm pretty sure I could keep going, but honestly, I can't remember everything. So, this is my feedback about everything that I think is wrong with the game. Hope you liked it. Now I think it would be great to say a little about the things I like about Breakpoint.
1st. The new healing mechanics. I like that, not so much the camp perks and foods. I you want to add that kind of content, at least do it for a reason and not just like an unnecessary bonus... And here I am complaning again.
2nd. Enemy and eviroment variety. Now it really feels like you're fighting in different ways thanks to that. I used to rush into camps in Wildlands without too much thought because all felt pretty much the same way. Now I'm more careful about it. Drones are a great addition too, and they give action a different perspective. That's always a good thing.
3rd. Sync. shot with drones. Being honest. Sync. shot in Wildlands with the NPC companions was broken. I like how is limited now, even the range drones can be deployed feels just right. I know some people will be upset with that but screw them, you took the right choice.
4th. Logic with reinforcements. I like the enemies don't keep a permanent alarm state with unlimited enemy reinforcements, it's better now.... And yet feels too soft. Enemies should be able to escalate reinforcements with even more and better units one more time if needed. After that if the alarm state keeps going enemies should take much longer on assisting the call. You should take example in Metal Gear games about enemy behaviour, they did an incredible work about it. Even the old entries of the franchise are amazing by modern standards.
5th. I like the new camping system. I would like to use it in immersive mode, but I use it with all bonus cause I travel a lot on foot and it pisses me off how you remove half of my ammo everytime I died, making me going back to camp in many ocations. Yeah, that's another complain, sorry about that.
6th. Freedom of action. I like how you can just go directly to the game boss if you want or do whatever you like in the order you prefer. Good job.
And to finish this ridiculously long post, I'd like to make a sugestion about the future of the game. Recently I played an ok game called "Sniper Ghost Warrior 3"... And while the game was just fine I was shocked by how cool sniping mechanics were... I think improve sniping with extra scope control and wind direction would be a great addition to the game and make sniping more fun and challenging at the same time, not to mention that fits perfectly with GR.
If you managed to read the entire thing. Congratulations!
Greetings from Spain.
