Worst game I've ever had the unfortunate privilege to play

First off, I'm not writing this review out of pure malice. There are some parts to this game that I appreciate highly.

To start, I want it to be known that I do not like this game. Not a bit. In fact, it's probably the worst game I've ever had the unfortunate privilege to play. But why?

Well, in the start, the tutorial itself is awful. While yes, most game tutorials should only give you the basics, the tutorial for this game is so bad at teaching you even that. Leaving the tutorial, I knew how to walk, lock on, and do a light and heavy attack. There were no character specific combos to review, no basic parry tutorial or guarding. They didn't go over attacks such as unblockables or stuns. The worst tutorial ever.

Coming out of the tutorial, I was instantly ridiculed by a group of friends that I play with for not knowing basic game knowledge. While it is true that the knowledge comes with time, there were some stupidly simple mechanics that were not even mentioned in the tutorial.

So, being new to the game, i just brushed it off as just me being a new player. However, jumping into the game even more, I realized something absolutely outrageous.

    The game is nonstop micro-transactions.

You want this hero that you've been training on for hours to learn basic combos? $10. Want that cool ability or skin? $10. Or, you can just get everything in the current season for just the price of $30. HOWEVER, YOU BETTER BE OK WITH SPENDING THAT MONEY AGAIN WHEN THE NEXT SEASON INEVITABLY COMES OUT.

Moving on to the multiplayer, the game itself is extremely uninviting to new players. I played for around 5 hours, and I faced nothing but getting 2v1'ed, getting cheesed with infinite combos, and an overwhelming amount of toxicity from other players. It's no wonder that the player base for this game died within a month.

Overall, if you are reading this because you are deciding on getting this game, I heavily advise against it. There are no servers, the game is only peer to peer, making lag absolutely unavoidable. You WILL NOT be given the slightest amount of a chance to get good. You WILL end up spending more money than you want just to play the game.

DO NOT GET THIS GAME. BOYCOTT FOR HONOR. GO TO HELL UBISOFT.

holy **** it was like 60 iq written into a reddit console player screech rant. first off for honor is far from perfect and i don't enjoy my experience frequently, but let me clear up some misconceptions and outright fallacies in what you said.

First off, the only Peer-to-Peer (P2P) setup in for honor is in specific custom games in which the custom game is created and then players are added to the group/party. This is usually only done for people that would have a better experience connecting to each other rather than a server intermediary (due to distance perhaps) and is used in competitive tournament dominion.

Second, in no way shape or form is this game pay to win or any of that nonsense. Any and all micro-transactions are the equivalent of a dlc or season pass and are completely optional. In fact, the major complaint about the battle pass was that it didn't contain enough value worth purchasing. In other words, people would choose to purchase it if the contents were worth their purchase. Every character is available for purchase by steel. Steel is earned through playing games and completing objectives/orders. The only complaint is that orders do not refresh daily, and it is admittedly so that the grind for steel can be tedious.

Thirdly, you are correct the introduction tutorial is notoriously bare-bones and any experienced player would be able to tell you that. Furthermore, the hero tactics section is also lacking and somewhat outdated. You are correct in that a lot of understanding this game comes with time, patience, and practice. There is a high learning curve in for honor, as well as a large skill gap curve and a large power curve within its heroes.

As far as your comment about lag, sadly For honor does not have the greatest netcode as it does not region lock groups and it has a latency cap of 300, both of these nowhere near good enough preventative measures to protect player experience. However, what you can do to help your setup (regardless of console or PC) is as follows: use a higher refresh monitor (TVs are notoriously bad for gaming as there is excessive input delay). While on console your frames will cap at 30 fps in game, a higher response time (ideal is 0-1 ms response monitor) and a higher refresh rate monitor can help your brain process quick and jerky movements that can be disorienting or hard to deal with (such as raider's storming tap which STILL has no animation to it, even on PC).

Additionally you should be playing with an ethernet cable. An ethernet cable can make even mediocre ISPs such as Spectrum seem competent and viable enough to have a pleasant gaming experience. Wifi data is transmitted a la half-duplex and an ethernet cable allows for full duplex. In layman's terms, using an ethernet cable helps prevent jitter and packet loss, which causes lag spikes and an unpleasant experience for both you and other players. If you are playing on WiFi, you're creating an unpleasant gaming experience for everyone, and even if you 100% chance cannot play with an ethernet cable setup, that's on you and if you choose to play and have a substandard experience then I don't know what to tell you.

As far as multiplayer gameplay, like stated before there is a high skill curve and a high learning curve in this game, and your comment about 2v1s, infinite combos, and "toxicity" is not only vague but childish. Yes, this game is not "balanced" and I don't think it ever will be, I don't think Ubisoft has enough developers dedicated to FH to make that happen, however, if you expect to go into a 4v4 multiplayer game and play 1v1s with basic moves and taking turns attacking, you're to put it simply delusional.

With regards to "toxicity", yes this game can be tilting, yes this game can be frustrating, yes players often have ridiculous latency and horrible connections, yes the servers are not top quality, but beyond all that, unless you're referring to a verbal/written interaction between players, anything else is on you to be angry about or not be angry about.

Before I wrap up, I do want to note once again, that if you decide to purchase the season pass for the new heroes, all it does is allow you to play them a week earlier than everyone else. Hardly pay to win, especially considering zhanhu is still to this day one of the weakest heroes in the game, and Jorm is only good in 4v4 because of his feats, otherwise his kit is bare-bones and lacking.

Finally, with all that being said, I do understand this game can be incredibly frustrating. I was in a customs 2v2 practicing for comp tourney (next weekend) earlier today got pissed off that my zone inputs were not registering and for most heroes it does a heavy which is annoying but I was playing shaman and it was registering as heavy into light (bleed stab) which kept leading to easy parries and punishes and I threw my controller out of sheer frustration. Afterwards, I took a 20 min break, came back played some casual dominion pubs, and then went to sleep for 8 hours. Sometimes you just need to take a break, and console can be more unforgiving than PC experience. I play on both PC and PS4.

My advice is to watch some youtube vids on characters you like as well as general gameplay, and strategy, and feel free to ask questions to more experienced players. If you ask questions nicely and don't flip off the handle, people are more willing to help you out and give you knowledge and advice. We all want this game to succeed, and some just have different opinions of what success looks like compared to others. I would also argue that this game is a success its managed a small niche in the gaming community with a small but loyal player base and has been active for over 3 years. Yes, there is still a lot of work to be done, but this game theoretically still is a work in progress.

Additionally, I recommend joining the for honor trials discord server, where some of the best players in the world are there to help you, either on console, PC, or both. If you still decide you do not want to play for honor, that's your prerogative, but please do not spread lies.

    BloodTypeA-

I can sympathize with your sentiment, however, I can't agree with all of it.

First off, the tutorial teaches you everything you need to know. Yes, it does teach you the basics. Once you've done the tutorial you're expected to finish both Apprentice Trials and Warrior Trials.
Once you've started with a character then move onto the Hero Tactics, to understand how that character plays and their combos.

Secondly, being a beginner, going into PvP is a really bad idea. Not only are you going to be matched up with far higher reputation players, but there's also a lot of smurfs (a player who's already a high rep player who's restarted with another account and looks like a low Rep player) in the game, something I've just written a post on.
Your best bet, until you get the feel of the game is to play against the AI, first in Training mode, to learn how to pull off the moves and practice blocking, parrying and moves and then go onto Duels, to get the basic of one on one.
When you want to move up, play Dominion, Tribute, Deathmatch and Breach all against the AI. Don't go into PvP. You'll rightly be smashed to pieces.

As for heroes, no, you don't have to pay for any of them. I'm currently a reputation 148 player. I have 5 characters from the knight faction (one at rep 11, two at 10, on at 8 and one at 3), 6 characters from the viking faction (four at rep 10, one at 6 and one at 3), 5 characters from the Samurai (three at rep 10, one at 15 and one at 2) and only one of the Wu Lin at Rep 10. I have amassed around 113k steel (currency) and about 532.5k in iron (?) for upgrading gear. All I did was buy the game, for around £10 when it was on sale, a couple of years ago.
This is what I recommend. Take a character, play with them up to Reputation 10, rinse and repeat. Not only do you learn how the character works, but you'll have a better time playing against that enemy and winning. You'll learn all the combos, feints and attack strings, as well as parry timings and punishes.
But non stop micro transactions, no, not at all, far from it. Now mobile phone games, like RAID: Shadow Legends, that's non stop micro transactions, along with 90% of all others.

And finally, yes, there is a hell of a lot of toxicity. What I suggest, when you get into PvP is to uncheck 'show text chat' and just keep fast chat on for team commands.

Stay away from PvP until you know what you're doing and understand the different maps.
