imagine a hollow cross that has 4 horizontal arms, 1 top arm and a bottom arm

you have the cross vertical and fill it till only the top arm is empty with mercury

the lowest level the mercury can have is when the cross is vertical, if it leans the level will raise

this means the cross would have a force that when leaned puts it vertical because vertical is the lowest posible level of mercury

this could be connected to a pen or an umbrella to keep them vertical without being touched, do you think this is viable?

Interesting but the fact it uses mercury means no one will want it, and it might be illegal since mercury is poisonous.

    should be used water then

but really do you think it can work, it would rock having an umbrella that remains vertical by itself

Oddly enough, the radio is playing "Life in a Northern Town" right now.

    A Salvation Army band played
    And the children drank lemonade
And the morning lasted all day,
    All day
And through an open window came
Like Sinatra in a younger day,
    Pushing the town away
    away

    Sugarland rocks...

    Yep.

    1) Mercury is poisonous.

    2) Mercury is reactive with other metals.

    3) Mercury is expensive.

    4) You need a lot of that expensive, corrosive and poisonous substance in every unit so the thing works.

    Hence:

    1) Production would be expensive, polluting and dangerous.

    2) Units would be too expensive, potentially dangerous for users, and would need special treatment to be disposed of (like batteries, thermometers or spray cans, but much bigger).

Why don't you use some other thing -like bearing balls?

Anyway, I don't think the thing would work. Once the center of gravity is beyond the base of that 3D cross, it will rest in two or more likely three of those arms, resting in the most stable position, with mercury filling the lower space available, regardless of everything else.

You could train a monkey to hold the umbrella up. Put a little hat on him and charge the people who gather to see the spectacle.

Know your audience... What do folks expect from a trained monkey act? An umbrella? A hat? A little pair of spectacles?

    Just a thought...

either i invented a cool thing if it tends to verticality

or if it leans ive invented a free energy experiment since gravity would rise the potential energy of an static object whic is regarded as imposible

Now it's "If You're Going Through Hell"

    Well you know those times
When you feel like there's a sign there on your back
Says I don't mind if ya kick me
    Seems like everybody has
Things go from bad to worse
You'd think they can't get worse than that
    And then they do

Can't say I like that song...

Well build it, and post back with pictures and a full report. The (potential) stockholders are waiting!!
