    HDR colors washed out

I read all threads i could find on here, not a single one came up with any real solution.

I got a 900F Sony TV and I can't imagine that HDR mode would show the colours like when you set them to 20% colour and people seem to argue it might be more realistic..

    This just can't be right.

It feels like the whole 8bit RGB colour palette simply gets spread from 150 or 300 to 1000 nits brightness overall, like you would just take all colours and extend the master brightness level for everything with a x3 to x7 factor.

    That's no real HDR image.

I really wonder, because the paper white setting should make sure that the colours stay in the normal area and don't get too bright, and only things like the sun and special effects get a brightness of more than 150.

The extension of colour intensity in HDR mode is bound to a different colour space like bt 2100 in 4k or bt2020 in 1080p

Something is very wrong here for many people.

One thing I noticed: the HDR test picture in Odessey looks colorful and with good contrast. Only the game itself doesn't.

Did anyone come up with a solution?

The only thing that had an effect was to set the the Sony picture setting for hdmi signal range to limited. This would make the TV think, it gets a limited signal that it needs to amplify in colour and contrast to full range.

    Maybe that's really it.

Setting gamma to minus 2 in Sony picture setting - brightnes adds some contrast to it.

Pushing the HDR colors even more can be done by setting live colour to medium.

I'm running with limited range hdmi signal that extends the signal to HDR as if it was SDR (not really, but you get the idea) , set live colour to medium and standard gamma 0. That gives me the nicest colours of the water at least..

If there's a real solution to this all, maybe Windows related, let me know..

i was actually looking in the same situation
btw i got the same tv (900F)
and i know that before u had to manually set the signal into nvidia control panel to ycbcr 422 limited 10 bit to get proper HDR but now it seem that u need to let it to "auto" as HDR signal are now control by windows or the game itself (HDR on PS4 pro auto set itself to that)
but now it seem i have to use RGB 8bit auto mode
(there is no way to know the exact signal it send to the tv)
try the game during Daylight (in game) without storm or rain and when u see the image shout not be over expose but during night or in a cave the game overexpose to make it easier to see better
(at that moment going into the option and HDR setting the calibrate image get all overbright (but it may just be to avoid the game to be too dark at night)

there are moment the HDR look really nice and it will depends the location and time of day ingames as well as the weathers

iam doing some test too let me know if u find a fix
