"Survival seems more aimed for groups than Solos"
I play survival basically 80% of time solo ....its very difficult at first and most people quit after a few attempts but it is the most rewarding aspect of this entire game in my opinion. Last Stand is all PVP and not much fun for me so I don't even play in that world anymore

Sorry, this turned into a novel, but I thought a more in-depth write up would help you (and anyone else reading this later) decide which mode(s) are for them...
I am fairly sure the Dark Zone opens soon after the game offers a certain mission. It has been a long time, but I think you are maybe around level 8 when that happens.
Last Stand is indeed PvP only. I don't play it. Supposedly you can sit for quite some time waiting in the queue for a match now. I've heard 20 minutes isn't uncommon. That is what I HEARD, not experienced so who knows if it is an exaggeration.
I think the West Side Pier (WSP) is included in the base game after version maybe 1.4 or so. You'll enter this area through Camp Clinton. The WSP itself is PvE but the various enemy factions work together. So, you'll see the factions mixed with each other and they don't fight each other like they do if they encounter each other in the LZ. I kinda like the WSP. I think it was intended to be a more live version of the LZ and it is certainly that. There are enemies spawning all over which is both good and bad. I like to play as a sniper and I get REALLY annoyed playing that way in the WSP as you clear an area and then enemies spawn nearly on top or behind you. Every 10-15 minutes or so it will give you a task. Kill these 3 named elites, protect a transmitter, destroy transmitters, etc. The "protect" mode is tough because usually there is little cover where you need to stay. I found the D3 is the most effective during those.
There are 3 different resistance locations available in the West Side Pier. Resistance is what many refer to as "Horde Mode". It is a wave after wave after wave of enemies with very short gaps in between. I found this fun for about a week. Then, there's a way people figured out how to farm the caches effectively going up to ~wave 10 and quitting instead of the challenge of lasting as long as you can. I helped people do/learn that. Now, I nearly despise that mode and haven't played it in a long time.
I purposely saved the underground and survival for last. These are what I am most experienced in, and many feel are the most fun add-ons.
The Underground is only available at level 30 and after you play the "Secure quarantine center" mission. This is an alternate game mode with its own leveling system of sorts which applies only to the Underground. At first, you can only run normal difficulty, single phase missions. They introduce hunters to the game that will randomly spawn once you hit hard difficulty. You will eventually level up to level 40 which gives you additional options including "Directives" which lets you modify the scenario. You can also start running 3 phase missions starting at level 30 if I remember right. I'll reiterate that the levels are just for down here and do not affect anything once you go back to the LZ. I guess in that respect, it is similar to the Dark Zone which has its own level cap of 99.
Survival can be done solo or in groups. It can also be done playing PvE only, or PvPvE. As mentioned above, Survival has a steep learning curve and the first few runs can be overwhelming. Though I generally say playing solo (at least in PvE) is the better way to play Survival since it has shared resources, I would suggest going with an experienced player a few times so you can learn the basics. It is a good idea to look up one of the many Survival maps available on the internet. At first, I put the map up on a 2nd monitor so I could refer to it. Note that it is the EXACT same map as the rest of the game (minus the underground and WSP). So, while there are small changes here and there, it is handy to keep that in mind as many/most of the supplies will be in the same spot. There is a couple of new aspects new to Survival mode. One is the extremely cold temperature. in this mode your clothing isn't just for appearance, it introduces a temperature rating. At first, you'll spend time running from burning barrel to barrel or ducking indoors just to warm up. Another is the Sepsis timer which you have to manage to give yourself long enough to reliably complete the run. Don't hoard them, use them as soon as your timer starts counting again. I would suggest saving one med kit however if solo as you can self-revive with it in that mode. What I meant above by shared resources is that every person in that game session will start on the same map. So that means is if they get to the various loot spots first, it will be picked clean. If I hit empty spots often early on, I'll often just exit and start again. I don't like it much when there are more than ~10 players in the mode. The only way you'll know how many are if/when someone leaves. It will tell you how many are left. You will see other players in PvE mode. You can choose to revive them if they go down but you are in no obligation to do so. When a player goes down, it starts a 5 minute timer. If no one revives you in that time (or they leave the game), they will die and you can loot their corpse. Speaking of looting corpses. The game mode has commendations. If you are a completionist and want to get as many as you can, I'd check them out before your first run so you have an idea of what you are trying to accomplish. I bring that up, because looting corpses is one of them. I had all the others done in ~5 hours (I think). There is one for playtime, I had them done by that number except for the looting corpses one. It took probably 4 times longer.
There are two options to enter the game mode. One might just be called Survival queue and it has a maximum of ~6 minute timer. The other one insinuates waiting for groups or matchmaking but I can't remember exactly what it is called. That mode can leave you waiting for quite a while. Note that you can enter either queue with a group already formed. As I mentioned, I'd suggest running Survival solo but at first a group of two might not hurt until you learn the ropes. I found that in a group of 4 we were all weaker than when we ran solo or as a pair.
If you want a hand and are on when I am, look me up. My post name is my original account and I play it some, but mostly play as Bambihunter71. I play sometime between 6-10 pm CST and when I can on the weekends. I often just log in to do the daily combat and daily crafting, but I am always down to help a fellow agent learn the game in any of the modes I play. (sorry, you are on your own if you want to do DZ or Last Stand).
