It could be that the whole past experience is some crazy Precursor simulation, and not a re-living of the past, where an artificial protagonist of her choosing is created for Layla to control. In this case, Layla would be the only true canon protagonist of the game. So, maybe we play as Layla, who has created either the male or female version of Eivor to be her vessel.

I’ve been doing quite a bit of thinking about this.
So you are assuming that we wont even use animus, maybe some other device?

I’m assuming they’re two separate people with the same name, and that we’ll use the animus.

My second hypothesis is just another way I could see things potentially working: of which I’m sure there are many, many more.

Or it could be as simple as there being no records of Eivor's gender, just described as a warrior and/or chieftain, and it not being part of the plot at all.

DNA sample has nothing to do with records. Nevertheless we will find out, hopefully before launch.

    But worryed for what, exactly..?
The name is used for female gender and means "good luck" or, in accordance with the old norse, "defender of island" (more or less). But this not meaning that the name could be used for men, also. (Like Andrea per gli italiani).

They still have and use records of the various characters. There could also just be some simple explanation about the genetic memories being unclear for whatever reason.
Point being, it's not necessarily some complicated or remotely important plot reason behind it. The simpler it is, the less chance of it sounding ridiculous, forced, or contradictory.
Either way, it'd be nice if they don't do a 180 and suddenly declare one of them to be canon again...

Only the female is canon because Eivor is a female only name.

Ubisoft disagrees, since this thread is about them saying both are canon.

Ubisoft should have picked a gender neutral name then. Eivor is a female only name, both in old Norse and all current modern Nordic languages.

Only female will be canon for me, a male Eivor is an oxymoron and too jarring.

I am italian and I know very well that some girls are called Andrea, like the boys.In a tv game show I've also seen a girl called Jonhatan.
But I'm worried because it isn't the same thing with Eivor. This name, both during the viking age and today, has never been used also for a male.
The real problem isn't this, because, like I've said,it sounds very viril for me.
I wrote the real problem in the message before the one you have considered.
The real problem is that maybe Darby mcDevitt said they are both canon so that more people preorder the next game, but, when the game will be released or when the novel will be revealed,we we will discover that there is a canon story with only one canon character that is female because Eivor is a female name.
I'm worried because I think that ubisoft hasn't been sincere with us.
I know that, not to make spoilers, they won't reveal their "trick",but I hope that they will give more informations about the name choice, because it has never used both for females and males.
