I just have a question for Ubisoft, why does Uplay continously add the 856 file to my registry. I've deleted it about a hundred times already. And it does this despite the fact that the 856 file in Uplay and the Far Cry 4 file break the game and don't allow to even start the game, editor or any game besdies Far Cry 4 like For Honor. Far Cry 4 and Uplay desperately need a patch so that the launching problem is fixed once and for all.
thats where your save games goes with a steam copy of the game .. the Steam version of the FC 4 map edit program = busted
of you use it it adds a new Ubisoft reg entry and breaks your game
the 856 folder has nothing to do with the editor
thats where your far cry 4 save games is stored
sometime around the end of March 2019 Steam changed the files they distribute with the far cry 4 game and it screws with the editor they have on file
the uplay only version of the game does not have this problem
Valve changes many things in the games to distribute games on steam ..even the save file location to lock you into only buying your DLC on steam if thats where you bought your base game from
there will be no patches made to far cry 4 as the game is over 5 yrs old ..steam needs to change the files they distribute with the title and correct the issue with the files they have on their servers
i own both a uplay only far cry 4 gold copy
and a steam gold copy of the game .. the uplay only copy the map edit program works fine as does the game .. with my steam copy .. it breaks the game once i use the editor ..hence i only use my uplay ONLY version anymore
again the 856 folder is for your game saves
with the steam version of the game, it saves your game to
C:\ Program files X86 \ Ubisoft \ Ubisoft game launcher \savegames \ *a folder with a long series
of letters and numbers Varies from system to system* \ 856
the Uplay only version they go in
C:\ Program files X86 \ Ubisoft \ Ubisoft game launcher \savegames \ *a folder with a long series
of letters and numbers Varies from system to system* \ 420
steam does this with many ubisoft gameS .. why ??? i dunno i guess to lock you into buying the dlc from them so they get their 30% CUT
the fix for the steam version of the FC 4 map edit program can be found on the steam forums in the TROUBLESHOOTING TIPS SECTION .. the info has been posted there for over a year now..IT involves REMOVING THE BAD UPLAY REG ENTRY THE STEAM VERSION OF THE FAR CRY 4 MAP EDIT PROGRAM CREATES ONCE YOU OPEN IT ..THEN REINSTALL THE UPLAY LAUNCHER FROM THE UPLAY WEB PAGE
if using the editor is that important to you , maybe consider buying a Uplay only copy of the game the next time it goes on sale
the far cry 4 map editor site = gone nowadays anyway , so i do not see much point in making maps for the game anymore as it was replaced with the far cry 5 arcade map editor site over a year ago .
and that may be where steam goofed up with the files they have, and they give out ..remember valve takes 30 % of the cash you spent on the game ,(ubisoft loses that cash off the top ) and VALVE changes the save file and install paths and only adds more DRM to your game .. since if you buy the game on steam........... you must open steam to play the game or use the editor as well as Uplay
uplay only copies only require the Uplay launcher..and do not have this problem
UBISOFT support was made aware of the issue with the STEAM version of far cry 4 map edit program last year , i guess they can not fix steam servers and the files steam distributes .. that's up to VALVE to correct .. and at VALVE , they just do not seem to care .. they just want your cash..try to contact steam support .. you'll see what i mean
thanks for the reply but for some reason after deleting the 856 file, far cry 4 and the edtior load and work. thanks for clarifying it's the save file though but i have idea how to fix my problem. at the moment the map editor only loads sometimes and doesn't load whatsoever unless the 856 file is deleted. the base game doesn't launch at all unless i delete the 856 file but my saves aren't deleted as i use cloud save but recently disabled it to attempt to fix my problem. thanks for replying either way, far cry 4 is pretty much dead now as i dont really see too many new maps or new threads here with many replies. i guess i might have to buy a uplay only version since i have it on steam. thanks!
dude i'm telling you what i KNOW to be FACT

also back up your save files before you uninstall uplay is always a good idea and i keep the cloud save setting in uplay totally off at all times and rely only on my own save game backups
https://support.ubisoft.com/en-US/Fa...p-my-save-game
this is also mentioned in the tips section pinned on the steam forums .. as well as back up saves if you need them are available there
and for some odd reason this is the only far cry game that it seems saves are not encrypted to your individual uplay account , as i have tried akuna's save files here and he lives in israel i live in the usa ..and his save files worked on my machine
good luck
and yep i was playing the game all morning and yes the editor i just tested it , opens , and loads perfectly every time, as does the game with my Uplay only copy of far cry 4 gold
here is my steam system info file in case it helps you ,as yes i built a decent PC to run FC 3 , 4 and 5 with ..and dunno why steam still does not detect my OC on my CPU all 4 cores run @ 4.4 ghz according to CPUZ and my system bios not 3.8 ghz

I only have the Uplay version of the game too. But maybe I can think of a workaround to get the Steam version working.
I don't full know the details of this issue, but so far I gathered that Far Cry 4 has 2 internal codes:
-Uplay edition is 420
-Steam edition is 856
Specs of the installations:
Uplay Steam Savegames %ProgramFiles(x86)%\Ubisoft\ Ubisoft Game Launcher\ savegames\{YOUR_UPLAY_ID}\420 %ProgramFiles(x86)%\Ubisoft\ Ubisoft Game Launcher\ savegames\{YOUR_UPLAY_ID}\856 Uplay Launcher REGISTRY entries HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Ubisoft\ Uplay\GameStarter\420 HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Ubisoft\ Uplay\GameStarter\856 Mapfiles & game config %USERPROFILE%\My Games\ Far Cry 4\{YOUR_UPLAY_ID}\ %USERPROFILE%\My Games\ Far Cry 4\{YOUR_UPLAY_ID}\ Editor configuration REGISTRY HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\ Ubisoft\FarCry4\Editor HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\ Ubisoft\FarCry4\Editor ?
The GameStarter keys in the registry for my Uplay installation only contain a "StartResult" value which I assume is the key checked by Uplay to determine whether an application executed properly. You're saying that removing that key for 856 (Steam) allows the editor to start, and having that key doesn't allow the editor to start?
Have you tried creating the 856 key empty, and then setting its Permissions to be read-only? Maybe that will prevent writing to it.
nice idea Steve... but if the op does that and makes the 856 folder read only it will not write his save files to the proper location for a steam version of the gameOriginally Posted by Steve64b Go to original post
and he will not be able to save his game ..AT ALL
as that folder will be blocked from writing the
1.save
1.save.upload
2.save
2.save.upload
files that the game uses . one is an auto save the other is a user save ,, remember far cry 4 only has a single save slot to begin with for the game
blocking the game from writing to a 856 folder will make it so the op would have to play the game from start to end .. without stopping or shutting down the game at all .. as he will have no saves this ... every time he restarts the game ....he starts from the beginning
i think it's highly possible steam has to fix the issue on it's end as it seems they have the wrong version of the map edit program .. its possible they updated the files last march and included a uplay only version of the updated far cry 4 map edit program
and that's why the steam version of the map edit program wants to create a bad Ubisoft reg file ????
as remember was it not last year that they updated the far cry 5 map editor and DLC to include things from the other UBI games and it was around the same time a major patch was released for FAR CRY 5 new dawn if my memory serves me right ??
i still think its a problem lies with the files steam has on their servers ,
as i owned FAR CRY 4 on steam since the day it shipped in 2014 yep bought it at midnight nov 18th 2014
and did not have a problem till last march .. but i picked up a uplay only copy for 12 bucks that same month .. as i wanted to get away from steam's extra DRM layer anyway ..as i remember having to wait extra weeks sometimes for patches vs uplay only users ..
(an heck my uplay only copy of FC 4 gold was like 12 bucks after using my uplay points for the discount in a uplay sale )
the 1.6.0 patch was like that , with a delayed patch release for steam users back in 2015 as steam again goofed up the files even back then
uplay users got the patch right after x mas 2015 .. Steam users had to wait weeks for a corrected Steam version 1.6.0 patch to get released
and from then on till now all my Uplay games i buy direct from ubisoft , screw steam ..i do not need the added hassle and added DRM
in fact far cry 4 was the last ubi title i bought on steam .. ever since then i buy only a uplay only copy ,,even got Primal and fc 5 and new dawn as uplay only copy the day those games shipped ..and the new AC games as well and got them cheaper then steams prices on day 1 that they came out (god bless the legit uplay digital partner sites like green man gaming ..saved at least 35 % on each one )
and ya know what ? ........... they all work great !![]()
I wasn't talking about the folder, I was referring to the REGISTRY key: right-click the 856 & select Permissions, first try removing write access of your user. If that doesn't help, maybe also remove read access.Originally Posted by WID992007 Go to original post
As deleting some info from the Registry seems to fix it, maybe you can prevent writes to the key in the registry to make sure starting the editor doesn't add more data there.
Alternatively, if this indeed has something to do with the file folder instead (AFAIK the editor shouldn't have any business checking the savegame folder), then maybe making the "420" folder a directory symbolic link to 856 (or vice versa) could do the job.
