What a fiasco from UBIcrap again!

Played and finished Valhalla with so many random crushes/things not working, not launching and other annoying stuff.

Now wanted to play Black Flag (never finished it) and I cant launch it with external monitor with my new laptop with 5800h+rtx 3070.
Funnily game works on laptop screen itself, just wont launch when plugged to monitor or TV.

So glad I didn't pay for this game, just got it on Ubi promotion for free a while back.

    Edit:
I found a culprit of my issue lol, my laptop is connected to usb hub with mouse (wireless) and keyboard (wired) + wireless couch keyboard with touchpad, when Ive unplugged couch keyboard dongle game starts....

    What a total nonsense!

I have everything else working fine however I plug thing but this flop wont launch with a extra keyboard. Biggest LOL I had in a while!

    Possible Solution

I am not sure if the problem I encountered is the same as everyone else's but I have partly solved the problem in my case. So I can't guarantee that your problem will be solved, but it is worth trying.

The reason I say "partly solved" is because the overlay button doesn't work even if the game starts properly (maybe due to a different problem). But it's not a big problem for me personally, after all who cares about the overlay feature.

Frankly, my process is quite simple ; I was able to start the game by running directly via the exe in the game's installation folder (C:\Program Files (x86)\Ubisoft\Ubisoft Game Launcher\games\Assassin's Creed IV Black Flag) instead of running the game from the ubisoft url (whether it is via ubisoft connect or the desktop url shortcut).

It is pathetic that ubisoft has not dealt with such a problem for so long, whether the problem is that simple or more complex. If the problem is that simple, it shows that they are not open and looked at the problem at all, or if it is more complex then they are not interested in a problem that the user cannot solve alone.

I hope everyone's problem is solved this way.

Changing Graphics Settings Without Opening the Game

It's been a while since the question was asked, but let me answer the question anyway; graphics settings are kept under Documents\Assassin's Creed IV Black Flag; general settings are store in Assassin4.ini, some other settings store in GFXSettings.AC4BFSP.xml. You can easily edit it by opening it with a Notepad-like application. But changing the graphics settings didn't make any difference for me.

    Mini Trick For FPS

By the way, while I was reviewing the files in which the game's graphics settings are stored, I noticed one more thing; The screen I use is 144 Hz, but in the game settings 60 Hz above are not available.

I changed the RefreshRate values in Assassin4.ini and GFXSettings.AC4BFSP.xml files to 144 (no need to change all the values in GFXSettings.AC4BFSP.xml, it is enough to change the value of the resolution used, the rest change by themselves after the game is opened). When playing the game with 60 Hz, my fps value ranging from 48-58 increased to 57-61 at 144 Hz.

    Hey bedevi-root,

Thank you for providing a workaround in such detail. Hopefully this will assist others having the same problem.

This is seriously infuriating. For me, the game sometimes works and sometimes doesn't. I played the other day and it was fine. Today, bupkis. I think it's pretty lame that after all this time, there's no fix from Ubi and no genuine one-size-fits-all solution offered. I already bought Valhalla ... it might just be the last Ubi game I ever buy if this is how lackluster their support has become.

I'm playing on a higher end machine (Ryzen 3800x, 32 GB RAM, RX5700t, high end 192 Khz/ 32-bit sound card, installed on an SSD). Nothing is overclocked. Every driver is up to date. Nothing is running in the background. I've tried disabling antivirus, bypassing Steam and launching direct from the Ubi launcher, cursing loudly at the computer, and none of that helped even slightly.

This is one of those games I've had for ages and should've finished forever ago, but life got in the way. Now I'm ready to finally sit down and beat this game ... and I can't, because it doesn't work. And there are no working solutions to this problem anywhere. Ubi isn't helping. The good news is that I have literally hundreds of other games to play. But I'm rightfully frustrated there are so many people reporting this issue all over the Internet and nobody at Ubi seems to offer anything more than "hey, did you try what that other guy tried?"

I have all the other AC games, and can't play any of them until I beat this one. I have to do them in order; call that what you will. But this is an issue that should have been patched a year ago. Heck, this worked for me a year ago. It works fine on my aging Asus ROG laptop even. Why can't I play it on my vastly superior desktop?!

    usb stuff

Seems the game has some problems with unusual stuff plugged in your pc

The solution for me was to unplug a usb foot peddle.
if it is plugged in the game won't start and if i plug it in while the game is running it immediately crashes.

I also have a USB extender, which was plugged in the last time the game was played. My Logitech F710 wireless controller is plugged into it. I tried unplugging every other device though (Blue Snowball mic, webcam, two external hard drives, and my daughter's kindle and my Oculus Quest 2 which were both charging). Still nothing. And most of that was plugged in last time without any issue. My frustration level is maxed out now. Ubi needs to fix this or I'm done.
