Darpa Research Labs 3 Teams under 18 mins on leaderboard (Xbox)

Was this under 18 minute time window purposely chosen by the Devs?

There are a view videos on YouTube of people completing this. If you don't feel like watching, basically what each have in common is,

    • Groups of 4
    • Generally, each player's builds are completely min/maxed
    • Each group had high SHD levels
    • Each group was communicating over voice chat
    • Builds are totally coordinated (2 dps, one CC, etc.)
    • It takes many many tries which requires a lot of time and patience.

After watching a couple of them, I had to ask myself. How could anyone at Massive, that plays their own game think this is something that should be part of the league. I mean I can understand keeping this challenge in the game, but part of the league seems really stupid or like a complete oversight.

Yeah it’s a great opportunity for the YouTubers and streamers to show off, but for a lot of the rest of us it feels more like an exercise in frustration and futility.

I’m sure they had the content rotation set weeks ago, but given the frustration that so many folks have had with DERPA recently, it kind of feels like a troll job to not only have it in the rotation, but on heroic.

I’m curious, do people feel like the adjustments that were made help out in the last boss fight?

did it in a 2man group both running all red builds in under 18min. 17:17 to be exact. Found 2man to be alot easier than 3man FYI. Have not tried 4man.

You also forgot RNG spawns going your way.

If you get too many chungus or dog spawns early, your run is over no matter how much DPS you bring.

One attempt my team got chungus spawns in the first two rooms. We usually clear those rooms around 3:30 if our time is good. With those chungus spawns we are looking at 4 minute+. That sort of thing adds up.

If there are too many extra robot dogs at the first boss fight, this contributes to it as well. Or if the spawns on the first boss bugs out because you kill enemies too fast and they can't all enter the arena.

One video of a successful <18 minute clear I watched, the team got extremely lucky. No chunguses until the scripted spawn in the rope room.

Where do you see the problem with it exactly?

They designed the leagues to have appeal for a broad player base:
    - 2/3 of the requirements for the max reward can be gained by easy grinding, even on normal difficulty, so even casual players have will get most of the rewards
    - Players who can handle the speedruns on Challenging, can get all the stages from the 3 Challenging speedruns, don't need to grind at all, and don't need to touch the Heroic speedrun
    - Players in between these two groups can get as many points from the Challenging speedruns as their player skill enables them to, and can pad the rest with the grinding tasks
    - Very capable players can try their hand at the Heroic speedrun (which is otherwise completely optional), and also have the leaderboards to compete in. These players don't need to grind at all as they will get enough points from the speedruns.

What is your idea for a better design that has an equally broad appeal?

An Internet meme that doesn't make a lot of sense and has spun out of control during the past year, thereby losing the little bit of rhyme and reason it may have originally had. Key figures include Looney Tunes, an overweight Bugs Bunny, and Jim Sterling.

In the context of Division 2, it seems to be the "Hey, I'm sooo cool/hip/rad/whatever"-players' term for Black Tusk tanks (the big armored enemies with miniguns).

If there is an issue with the time trials it would be the randomised enemy composition and spawns. Each run for each player or group of players is potentially different so it undermines the nature of the competition as the playing field is not even. The fastest times will in all likelihood be those with the least obnoxious spawns, so unless you are willing to repeat your runs many many times to find that nice set of spawns your time will be directly affected by that.

I think in the future that these trials should be normalised in terms of enemy composition and spawn. That way we each get to learn the same things and play the same trial.
