[Feedback] The Cut Content of Ghost Recon Breakpoint

    Abstract:

So, for this post I'd like to discuss an interesting post I found on reddit, surrounding some of the cut content of this game, and speculate why is was cut out, along with hopefully getting it added back into the game, but before we can do that I'll like to discuss what "cut content" actually means, and how it relates to Breakpoint.

    What is "Cut Content"

In a game, Cut Content typically describes a certain animation, weapon, character model, or any other part of the game that was cut out of the "full release" version of that game, during sometime around development, the alpha, or the beta stage of the game, but it's still in the game files, meaning a Modder or Developer can simply go and reenable the item at any time.

Note: Cut Content is not DLC that is separated and sold later, these are items that will most likely not come out in the future, unless through player intervention and knowledge.

See the Cutting Room Floor, A Wikipedia page that documents all "cut content" in games: https://tcrf.net/The_Cutting_Room_Floor

    An example, the Souls series:

One of the best examples is Fromsoft's Dark Souls or Soulsborne series of games, which are notorious for having large portions of the games cut out for various unknown reasons, and it can be small things, such as Dark Souls 3's cutting of various armor sets that still exist in the game files such as the Burial Knight set or the Hexer Set(Images for context),

They can also be large things that change the game completely like Dark Souls 3's day and night cycle, entire cutscenes like in Dark Souls 2, Questlines like Shiva of the East's quest in Dark Souls 1, or even entire bossfights like the "The Great One's Beast" from Bloodborne,

And yes, these are all still in their respective game's files, and Modders have even gone back and added them into the game, in mods like Daughters of Ash or Cinders.

The Cut Content of Ghost Recon Breakpoint

And now we move on to the actual point of this, Breakpoint's case of cut content, Now here, we have 3 items that exist that I've managed to find pictures for (from the reddit post), and they are rather interesting, as they are popularly requested items from Wildlands and Breakpoint, I will order them from A to C, from least significant to most significant, so we can collectively figure out why these could have been cut.

The Obvious Case: Figures: The most obvious example is the figures used in all the pre-release trailers that make up Nomad and the Squad, note I'm speaking about the proper characters and not the versions we have access to in game, as the developers have separate models that are completely accurate to the concept art, and are not missing various pieces to them. Why we still don't have access to this I can't give an explanation for.

Item A: Customizable Holsters: This 2 second clip is from one of the pre-release trailers that showed off the character customization, what made it interesting is that it seemed that the Holster had several different models that changed with Nomad as his gear changed, this one I'm a little iffy on whether or not it was actual holster customization, or simply the model changing with vests, so that's why I put it at least significant, as it's rather hard to tell if we were supposed to get customizable holsters.

Item B: Weapon Slings: Now one of the most requested items is seemingly already in Breakpoint being weapon slings, as seen attached to the weapon on the back of Nomad in the PvP match, and it seems that one point visible weapon slings were going to be a thing, but removed, however supported by the fact that Nomad already has animations that utilize a sling (such as the one where he breaths into his hands), My guess is that a developer made the sling invisible in game, however it's still animated onto Nomad, the reasoning is unknown as is all content cut from a game, but if I was to fathom a guess, it was most likely clipping on all the gear, and thus removed, so that every gear item didn't have to be animated with the sling in mind, but that is pure speculation.

Item C: Pistol Customization: Now I saved the best for last, it seems like at one point during development, there was obviously a much more in-depth gunsmith available to pistols even more so than in Wildlands, as seen here the player can change every aspect of the pistol to even the sight, but curiously there is both a "rail" and an "underrail" option, so maybe this was from the OTT or some earlier stage of development where they copied over the Rifle UI to all weapons?, as it seems like we're intended to have a more in-depth gunsmith (I can only imagine for rifles), but for some reason it was scaled back to the system we have in game (most likely due to variants and PvP balance).

    Conclusion

So what was the point of this, well it's cool first of all, to see game development in action and it's an interesting topic, but secondly and more importantly, to the Ubisoft CMs, will we ever see this stuff open to the player in game? As it most likely exists somewhere in the game files themselves, so I imagine it would be rather easy to open them up to the players, as these have been community requested items for a while, and not to mention, but this is only the stuff that's known and public, Who knows what else is hidden in the files for both Wildlands and Breakpoint.

    Thank you for reading.

Also side note: Any players from OTT remember anything that seemingly was cut, or is still cut from the main game?

My speculation is that they have a "full version" of Breakpoint, very akin to Wildlands, but were forced to field strip this game in order to meet schedules.

Ed, we'll get it but it'll be behind a paywall of DLC. People like vanity and will pay for it, These guys are more clever than we give 'em credit for. It's a deliberate marketing ploy.

It depends, the examples I used above for the Souls games never made it into the final cut for those games, and could only be accessed by messing around with game files, Sanadsk and Lance Mcdonald have great videos going through all the cut content in the various games.

Interesting post. It does indeed make you wonder what else is tucked away in there.

Before the terminator event I had set the time on console ahead and saw various items that are currently not in the game like a new pair of sunglasses. Also the option to choose different iron sights for the handgun.

It's in the game but they cut it out, thinking it will be mtx or added in a later update. Which frustrates me because with each update there is little to few new customization items.

Add the content what's already in the game Ubi and work on new items instead!

Been playing Uncharted 4 for first time lately, and if anything, that game proves the technology to do slings is out there in the world already, and I'd argue has been since days of MGS2.

    A 3 point sling nontheless:

    Now that you mention.
    During OTT...
Everyone used those old nylon holsters with exception of Fury...She used the blackhawk omnivore (Thank god they replaced everyone to the hard shell holster, they are easier and quicker to release the pistol from retention)...But I'm asking myself why they model it on the character knees, if on the concept of the characters, they draw it at correct height's.
I know that is not because of clipping, because there is nothing that could clip with the holster if it was at the correct height.
And I remember that there was the pistol sight's on the gunsmith, but there was no other option to choose from.
