Doesnt it seem like the compass should be part of default immersive mode?

Having immediate access is to a compass is more realistic than checking it when you pull your map out. If you ever spend time hunting or hiking of the path in unfamiliar territory you realize quickly how useful it is especially to keep yourself oriented in hilly terrain. And with the accelerated day cycle in game its even more important.

A compass, yes. But also a clock. The only way I've been able to find out what time it is while down range is to launch a drone. (it's below the reticle). Does anyone know of other places to find the current time?

In the bivouac, when you leave it gives you the option to choose a time to leave.

Ya I do the same. Pop the drone to see the time.

That's just time to leave. I'm talking about looking at a watch, what's the current time.

I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one. Always felt like I was being an idiot for missing something obvious. Apparently Ubi missed one of the basics.
