Ive Been leveling up Zhanhu currently by grinding breach and dominion matches and I plan to start playing duel matches once I get the armor pieces I want. But I have heard a few people say that zhanhu is is terrible in duels so I'm curious if he really is as bad as people say. Please let me know your opinions, I'd love to get a discussion going.

He can't access his mixups without throwing a light. A good player will just stay in your face and parry your lights. His deflect sucks, since it doesn't guarantee damage.
BUT
1) Only really good player are capable of parrying all the lights. The rest.. well you feint heavies in between, they will eat one of those lights.
2) On TG, his lights are hard to deal with due to his animation (especially, the right side, it's just a quite thrust). So, he will be better soon if changes come to live. On live, I can parry his lights, on TG, I eat his right side lights like tic tac.
3) if you really like the hero, you can make it work. On youtube people do quite well with weaker heroes. Though, if you meet someone who knows your hero, you will have to work hard to win.
Hey there long time master duel player playing the game on and off whenever. Im significantly above average but significantly below what you could call top GM players (not that GM rank means much in this game but anyway).
I consider Zhan Hu the single worst character in the game in duel by far. There is nobody remotely as bad. Every single move he has actually reads: give your opponent a free punish. His health is poor, his damage is poor. He has literally not a single good thing.
Nobody who is good at duel will consider Zhan Hu an even half decent character. He is very far below average.
Even on TGS he was very manageable in the same way as he is on live if you have good reflexes. On live he is abyssmal.
you're too harsh, in my opinion. He's not the strongest, but he can be good for duels. Every time he lands a light, you gotta predict if he uses UB-light, UB- heavy or GB. Yeah, you can option select, but then you can't do it all the time or he can just counter it by parrying or dodging your zone.belowMinRequirm

i personally enjoy him he isnt high tier but its all about mixing it up with him make your opponent guess and dont be afraid to let some things fly sometimes
but in high level yes he is very reactable even in TG he was slightly better but not very hard to parry you can dodge all of his UB both light and heavy too which sucks
i fought a nobu yesterday she hidden stanced both light and heavy ub and did a confirmed kick while me in recovery which sometimes put me oos , so yea he has flaws
but ofc i gb'd that later and countered it
his deflect sucks but its the best time to throw ub light while he is stunned
I wouldn't say he's the worst duelist but he's certainly not a good one.
His side dodge attacks can be back dodged on a single timing. His zone is both too slow and far too telegraphed to be used as even a half way decent option select.
His finisher mix up is an easy reaction because again like the zone is both too slow and also far too telegraphed.
His deflect doesn't net him any damage and frankly doesn't even make his finisher mix up better despite it having a blind.
His dodge cancel recovery times are worse than Tiandi's (barring his zone and running attack.) This combined with his dodge attacks lack of I frames means he can't even reliably counter consistently. Finally all of his "good" aspects to his kits are essentially lights and Zhanhu's overall damage profile is low. Meaning even if the opponent your fighting is only half way decent reaction time wise and he manages to punish you a few times he's still going to beat you everytime. Since light parrying is incredibly dumb.
On TG he's "slightly" better because light parry punishes were nerfed considerably and it's "harder" to react to him. But he's still pretty meh even on TG,
Going off of what Raime said, Zanhu just isn't a great duelist. He's decent in 4's, though.
I was super excited to see what the character was all about. I was met with a lackluster, basic and unreliable type of character that I can't rely on to duel with.
Again, the zone is quite a terrible option select, and I almost always parry it if someone decides to use it as a part of their chain... It's just habit, since every normal light or heavy finisher is unblockable. Not to mention it's quite an obvious animation, so even when I play with no indicators, which is what I've been doing recently (Lots of fun btw, I recommend it) it's not hard to block or parry.
Zanhu's superior dodgeblock is lackluster and doesn't guarentee any damage. I think since people don't really use it, it scares people if they pull it off. It stuns and blinds, so now they have to worry about an unblockable light or heavy pressure. I suppose that's good enough. Zanhu first does a palm strike that pushes the opponent back a little. I've actually ledged someone using just the deflect and not following up with any light or heavy, so that's cool. You CAN feint to GB if they're blind and you think they're going to attempt a parry, but it's almost too much to input just for a 30dmg heavy punish... Style points maybe if you do that kind of thing.
Infinite chains are cool, but Zanhu's are bad. The forward dodge light is alright, but you're never going to make it land in a fight.
I think the concept of keeping an infinite chain going with JUST dodge attacks or zones is cool, but it doesn't really work. You can either start with a light or heavy to start, then try to keep an infinite chain going with a forward dodge heavy or light, zone, or one of the side dodge inputs.
Another unique feature of Zanhu is you can input a light or heavy side dodge to switch the direction of the attack. In other words, you could dodge right, but could choose if the attack came from the left or the right, and vice versa. I suppose that works, since it's almost unreactable on console. But... It can be backdodged on a single timing like Raime said so that's bad.
Zanhu is the first character with unblockable lights, so his pressure can actually be pretty decent, as I don't think both the light and heavy finishers can be dodged on one timing. You'd have to make a read. None of the infinite chain routes work, though. Zanhu is unique but there still isn't enough utility for him/her to use.
There needs to be just a little more.
