🛈 Announcement
Greetings! The Division forums are now archived and accessible in read-only mode, please go to the new platform to discuss the game

Game difficulty in general is way off.

First, Id like to say that I understand all the different changes that were implemented in Warlords, total gear reset, we lost a bunch of OP talents, lost damage to elites, developers warning us that the game is going to feel more difficult until you get the proper gear, ETC.
I would also not classify myself as a hardcore player, but I do play a decent amount. I play a couple hours each weekday and do about 20 hours plus over the weekend. I played much more than that during launch of division 2 for a few months after. I got geared and was able to do challenging. Then decided to take a break.
I come back for the Warlords update and I see a bunch of new AI abilities, AE trash mobs are sometimes equipped with grenade launchers, cleaners are throwing those gas bombs that explode in fire, drones dropping multiple fire grenades, etc. Which is nice because because it got tiresome fighting the same thing over and over again. I was playing through the story and I was getting smacked hard while the mobs felt like they were on hard mode and I was playing with absolute garbage gear. I didn't think anything of it, I thought I just needed to get more gear, work on set bonuses, get god rolls, etc. I ended up getting those god rolled weapons and armor from the vendors before they changed it where vendors couldn't sell you items with very high rolls.
I completed the story with decent gear and started to run bounties, targeted loot areas to try to get gear I needed, but the game still felt like it is off. It feels like all the difficulties were upgraded 1 rank. Normal is actually hard, hard is challenging, and so on. I just play solo with the healing chem launcher and reviver hive and I'm getting chewed up. I tried changing my build, I started with mostly crit/ crit hit, headshot, but even then I still feel like the damage is nothing and because I don't have defensive, I get clapped. I then try a mix between crit/crit hit, headshot with some armor, and I'm doing even less damage, but I'm not getting shredded right away, I'm just getting shredded over a longer period of time because it's taking me much longer to kill enemies which in turn gives the enemies more time to shoot me. I remember back a month or 2 after launch, there was complaints of bullet spongeyness which the devs did tune down a bit which was nice, but here we are back in the same situation but even worse now because we don't have those OP talents and traits that offset the spongeyness. So it's even worse now than before. I feel more like it's a chore to play and grind out normal for mostly purples and garbage yellows in the hopes that I get a perfectly rolled piece with max stats, because that's whats needed to make any difference. I've quit playing most nights because I play for 1.5 hours and accomplish nothing. Just more credits and recal library fodder. I play on normal for the stuff I haven't played yet and I can get away with playing hard on the missions I've ran hundreds of times because I know what's expected, but even then it takes a long time to complete. I understand that we are no longer able to run through content and 1 shot everything, I'm not asking for that, but there is something clearly off.
Again, I just want to emphasize that I understand there's a lot of people that are enjoying this type of combat, but I'm also seeing a lot of people that aren't enjoying it. So I'm simply putting in my 2 cents. Some people enjoy the Dark Souls feel with punishing consequences and other people enjoy the god mode rolling in and slaughtering everything. I believe there should be a happy medium. What is currently going on right now is nowhere near medium.
Before I get blasted as a noob for posting this, we get it. You are amazing. If only all of us possessed your godly skills of gaming, the world would be better. You piss many liters of excellence. I am just a simpleton that needs to get good. Blah blah blah. I would just ask that you look at this situation as a community rather than just you yourself. They implemented legendary difficulty and those modifiers for those hardcore players so you guys have that option. What do the people that aren't as good as you and play less than you have? Not much, just a harder overall game. If the other part of the community isn't happy to play the game, then that community is going to be lost which will in turn make the game worse, and you elite players won't have a fun game anymore because it's bringing in less money, and the game will fall.
I bet there's a lot more of us that have a problem with the current difficulty than there are people that think it's completely fine. Just because people aren't coming in the forums and voicing their opinions doesn't mean there isn't an issue here.

That's practically impossible for a forum user to do. Every one of the complaints is based on personal anecdotal evidence. The devs will be the only people with accurate data to analyse, and only the devs will determine difficulty levels. So when you say, consider it from a community perspective it means little more than consider your own personal perspective.

Normal, Hard are the modes for those that struggle with the game due to gear or some other influence. There is no bullet sponge in Normal at all and Hard only increases TTK marginally. Challenge and onward do contain enemies with high health and armour (but they also have weaknesses which is what people need to learn to exploit). That is what you have and if that is not enough then I have no idea what to say to you other than improve your gameplay and gear because that will produce a palpable easing of the difficulty.

You stated yourself that you took a break from the game even though the game was remarkably easy at that stage. So it wasn't difficulty that moved you on; it was you. Why should players that have worked hard to understand the game and support the developers by persistent interaction with the game have their experience poisoned by, for want of a better word, casual players that are fleeting in their interest regardless of difficulty?

That's a two way street isn't it. I could just as easily claim that those that enjoy the difficulty far outweigh those that do not. I wouldn't though because it would be a rhetorical trick. The devs have the data and the devs will produce what they feel is best for the game and its players as a whole.

but here is a small little thing.

When they made the game too easy, the game died. When we had people spamming skills and face tanking things. The game died.

We did a revamp so the game will not die again. So wanting things to be easier is a sure fire way of killing the game again.

You make a lot of blanket statements where you are under some mistaken impression you are the voice of many.

Maybe you should just speak for yourself.

I mean sure I could, but I pick not too. After all they did a revamp for a reason. Many of us left because game blew, now we are back.

Honestly if you're as good as you've stated, and want the difficulty, why do you care if they mess with anything under Heroic and Legendary? From my understanding they aren't going to mess with the difficulties of those levels to provide you with the experience you are looking for. They shouldn't cater those two levels to those looking for the hardcore experience if they can't do it. Those two levels shouldn't be for everyone and noone should have the right to be successful at those levels.

Lol, I would of hated playing athletics with you. You would be the guy going hey I know we are pro caliber, but wouldn't it be better to just find a decent competitive minor league to conquer. Btw, we are gonna make sure all those other minor league players know we could play in the pro's if we wanted, it's just that I don't like if I make a mistake the ball travels far enough that it should offer dinner and an in-flight movie.

Consider this my response to whatever you come up with. If you are in the game for the hardcore experience who cares what they do if they leave those levels for the hardcore. Your goal should be to do everything, solo or group, on the legendary level.

I'm fine with an amount of scaling that makes sense and allows for a challenge. What I'm not fine with is gearing up and not being able to do certain content even when I have a fairly well optimized set of gear. It may be a cover based shooter but it is an rpg as well. If I never feel stronger why play?
