So, Ubisoft.
This was my absolute favourite game for years after it's original release. I looooved the methodical combat and mind games and the actual skill required to play. It was INCREDIBLE.
Now, I don't think every single thing about this game is bad. There are still many good things about it, but I was quite disappointed when I booted it up for Year 4.
I played 3 duels right after the update. I then proceeded to uninstall the game. I might come back next season, and I'll keep checking the patch notes with high hopes.
Here's what happened.
First duel, I needed orders done, and Warden was my man for the orders I had equipped. I fought against a Highlander. He did nothing but OF slash fake to kick fake to grab free unblockable heavy. Then he sees I'm expecting the grab, he lets the kick fly. Free unblockable heavy. Then he just lets a UB heavy fly. Hit. Then he fake fake to grab. Free UB heavy. Win. Every round just felt like I was unable to really even play, as the only reliable defense against this player was, errhm, back roll out of the fight. Boring.
To prove to myself that the loss was less a lack of skill on my end and more just reliable 50 50's for HL, I picked HL for my second duel. No rematch was had.
Next duel, I'm HL now, against BP. We start, and I go to spam my BS 50 50's. He bulwarks me a few times, I figure oh great the only reliable counter to HL and his 50 50's. Nope. I alter my timings just a little bit. 50/50's are hitting left right and center. Other HA heavies are just wrecking. I kick. Free UB heavy. I fake to grab. Free ub heavy. Boom. 2 rounds down. Little to zero effort. He takes round 3, genuinely it would seem. Its 2-1. Round 4. I'm just about to finish it. Suddenly he teleports into having GBd me. He takes round 4 with a latency of 180. He then proceeds to take round 5 with more high latency. Ok. Great. Thanks for not fixing that issue for your big year 4 release.
Duel 3. I go back to Warden. I'm confident that duel 2 was mine, except for some reason crap internet gets you the advantage. Oooooook. Opponent picks LB. Welp. That's an automatic loss, especially at my level of play where every single player knows how to abuse LB's moveset. Of course I lost. Every action I can perform can be stuffed out by a single action. Shove. He spammed shove the whole duel, and just stood still the whole time til I tried ANYTHING. I even tried baiting his shove, but I can't gb a whiffed shove or get anything really. All I can do is dodge the shove, then he just waits more til I commit to ANY MOVE, he uses shove, my combo is over, now he's poking me.
Like honestly, I had high hopes, but I played 3 duels, was on for maybe, MAYBE, an hour, and yet all of the game's worst problems just came screaming at me, one after the other.
50 50's like HL shouldn't exist. I get easily ruined by them, and I easily ruin WITH them. They are too high reward for too little risk.
The latency issue is ridiculous. Why does the player with cheaper internet get the advantage?
LB is seriously broken. Top light is stupid. Shove is stupid. That's all you need really. Just spam shove and top light. I'm sure you'll do "well".
Anyways. That's it for me for now. I might come back. Just letting you know a veteran player has finally had enough. The most obvious problems remain, and in it's current state, this game has no hope of being taken seriously in the E sports scene. Good day.
Your most crucial mistake was selecting Duel on the mode select screen. Don't do that. For Honor is not even remotely optimised for 1v1 play. At best it's just about serviceable but that takes setting up a custom match where the timer is set to 1 minute and the rules are the first player to get to 10 rounds won is declared the winner of the match.
As for the matchups you had:
1) Warden is capable of beating Highlander by putting pressure on him with his own unreactable offence. Both players need to rely heavily on reads in that fight however and honestly it seems like the HL made better reads than you. Granted, he needs to make fewer successful reads than Warden because he gets 40 damage on amost everything whereas Warden only gets 40 on one option. However Warden can put Highlander through a bigger variation of unreactable mixups thus getting more consistent damage in more frequently.
2) Bad internet always wins. The strongest secret character pick in the game.
3) Warden has a favourable matchup against LB in the context of the game's default rules, i.e. 10 minute timer. Warden has unreactable offence from neutral, LB doesn't because you can easily guard top and react to sides. Warden can absolutely bait and punish dodge shoves very successfully. And it sounds like that LB was throwing a lot of dodge shoves. Warden doesn't have to throw a single attack that is parryable thereby denying LB his strongest tool as a duelist i.e. his parry punishes. The way to win is that you have to be more patient than the LB player.
I've never said that LB has no bad matchups. You've actually said that LB has no bad matchups and I've corrected you in the past.Originally Posted by AmonDarkGod Go to original post
