So ive played every assassins creed game there is with the exception of origins and odyssey until of late. i stayed away because they just didnt have the appeal the others had. but i decided to play them(they were on sale) and i thoroughly enjoyed them.... until i was getting later into the game and i was more worried about my level and the gear i had equipped than the actual game itself. i was skipping through dialogue and cut scenes because i was just trying to grind through to level up and find some higher damage dealing weapon so it wouldnt be as hard... and thats when i realized i didnt care. as beautiful as the world is and as much as there is to do i felt the game was marred by the gear ratings and leveling that i no longer cared for the story or any of the side quests. they felt grindy and boring because i was no longer doing them for fun but because thats the only way i would be able to level up to take on the main story line, or take out the crazy fort. anyways i hope this gets addressed in the future because the games were amazing and beautiful and told intricate stories that i ended up skipping through. i cant wait for the next game and hope something changes with the gear or progression where it doesnt affect the story too much.
I can't agree with this. Origins' story is one of my favorite one in the series and I also really like Odyssey's. The story always interests me more than the level up and the grinding, even if I'm glad with the new RPG elements that started in this game. There are a lot of sidequests, but I personally enjoy most of them. It gives more dept to the historical period; we see more of it. But if you don't like them, you really don't have to do all of them to reach the level of the main quest.
I think both Origins and Odyssey have some pretty poignant moments, but I agree with OoRogueoO that the progression breaks it up too much.
I wonder if these games' stories would be more remembered if players had the option to go from story mission to story mission unhindered, like we could do in older games?
Unity was similar since without "grinding", your gear and weapons were of lower level. The only difference was that in Unity, there are no 55 or 99 levels but only a few. Upgrading weapons and gear did not come out of the blue in Assassin's Creed games. Leveling up was a common feature among older AC titles. It's just that Origins and Odyssey have dozens of levels, not 5... Previous AC titles had a simpler leveling system.
I agree with Sam_Boo26. I loved the Origins story and the Odyssey story. The DLC's were great too. I especially like King Tuts afterlife. It was beautiful. The side missions were great too. I also liked how the Odyssey mechanics and the Origin mechanics were slightly different which gave the game a fresh approach. I brought most of the games in this franchise after playing Origins and then Odyssey, but I just can't get into the other games, except Black Flag which I played for about 12 hours. The characters are tiny compared to Origins and Odyssey, although I did like the Checkers game in Black Flag.
