    What's fun about this?

I read that there will be no islands or landmasses to visit. That sounds horribly boring. Where am I going to bury my treasure, and where can I dig up yours? And how can I assault the fortress if there's no land? And where do I travel on my piratey journeys? Where do I buy rum?
I like the pirate idea, it's a good one, but it's not going to work for me if I can't buy rum anywhere.

You guys ever heard about Fallout 76? They thought it would be a good idea to remove NPC:s from the game, only having players populating the world. Players can't substitute NPC:s because they're not of that world and will behave like... players. This "innovation" was a spectacular failure.
To put up an analogy with this situation: Ships and sea can't substitute land and settlements. It will be a dead world, not an innovative and focused step that will engross everyone into the life of a pirate.
If there's no ports where I can haggle for rum, and no islands to bury my treasure, no forts to siege and no discoveries to be made, only open sea; I won't even try it. I don't care how good the combat is then, it just doesn't matter.
That game, For Honor, which specialize in melee combat. Won't ever try it. Why? Cause there's no where to go, no one to meet and nothing but fight to do. It doesn't matter how good it is, cause I need a world to be a fighter in or I won't bother. Sure, it's a personal preference but I doubt I'm alone in this. I'm sure that melee has a broader audience than sailing does... And still, from what I've heard, For Honor is, and has always been, in trouble. Why? I think it's because there's no world, only arenas. Granted, this is a major problem because the next generation of MMO:s are not here yet. Making a grand scale world that is inhabited by many people come with great challenges. But this game isn't supposed to be a multiplayer game, or is it?

For me it's you who are boring to criticize all the time when the game is not even released. So just wait to play the game after this we talk about it again...

For me, this seems boring. Both your post and the game, so there's no point in discussing neither game or writing any further. I won't get this game. Why would I? This goes right into the fail box, together with your personal attack.

You are not wrong- for honour is a shallow experience without the true MMO feeling. It is why i have sent or asked hundreds of times for mod tools to be provided to allow players to mod them in. It would not be hard to add hub worlds to for honour.

Or a for honour MMO. It is why i also agree that a game like SKull and Bones will be a souless game without foot/ sword combat

When I heard about this game I got excited right away! Pirates are great : ) Having just played Odyssey I immediately thought that it would be a similar experience but with emphasis on naval combat. Which is cool, it's about pirates after all. Maybe in the Caribbean? Some tricks to the sailing, like actual wind direction and power would greatly complicate traversing the seas. I can absolutely see potential here. Which is why I bother to make any comments on the game to begin with.
But then I hear these crazy things about how the game will be played solely from the ship and not even have combat outside of ships fighting. That's ludicrous. I see complete failure in the future of this game. A failure so great that it is possible that the game will disappear too quickly to even be recorded as having ever been released.
Serious question: Are the people writing this game mad? Like, do they live in an asylum and this is what they get to do with their free time?
I make jokes but one can wonder about these things... Why would you make a pirate game without islands? Sure, pirates didn't actually bury treasure all around or anything but please do try and indulge us. And who doesn't want to play Blackbeard, with a flintlock pistol and a scimitar, engaged in frenzied melee? Really, who doesn't want that? Who doesn't want to storm a fortress or just anchor in a small harbour for some supplies and a bit of gossip at the local pirate bar? Or make landfall on an unexplored volcanic island filled with ravenous cannibals?
This extremely narrow focus of this game will inevitably lead to its downfall. There's no reason for me to even look at this.
