What's the advantage to classic helicopter controls?
Classic helicopter controls gave you more manoeuvrability and the possibility to make real U turns using momentum at your advantage. Furthermore, dropping altitude was quicker and more realistic in my opinion.
On the use of helicopter weaponery, yes it was difficult for one gold reason: the total absence of crossair. Normally, helicopter weapons are in general fixed and the can't move up and down. Putting ordnance on a target means that the machine has to learn slightly forward to lock on target. More advanced attack helicopter (Mi24-35, Ah64, Mi28, Ah1, Tiger, Mangusta, and many others) use advanced targeting systems and munitions (30mm gun mounted in a turret controled by the copilot, Wire//radio/laser guided missiles and rockets).
The "new" controls have made the helicopter behave in a manner that suppress elements like inertia, altitude drop, and introduced an arcadish behaviour that remiends me the physics on a game called Mercenaires 2.
Personally, and I speak only for myself, the "Classic" controls are more realistic than the "New" ones. Because, they offer more possibilies (like circling around an outpost with a door minigun for example), the were more precise too in my opinion (in GRW I could land at 80% of maximum speed on the roof of SB buildings drop my squad and takeoff again to provide CAS). All this is impossible with the "New" controls.
I sincerely hope you will find my explainations helpful and it will help you understand my point of view on this matter.
Best regards
