A damned near perfect account of the game, where it excel but more importantly where it fails. Everything added to the game that did not exist in Wildlands that also do not belong in a Ghost Recon game were added to push the sales of MTX (micro-transactions). Even though they removed it and claimed it was an accident the ability to buy skill points is an obvious sign that they sought to monetize every aspect of this game, treat it like a Free to play game.Originally Posted by Virtual-Chris Go to original post
Erewhon Social Space - This is so players can see the cosmetic purchase of others. You could buy cosmetics in Wildlands but there was no way to see others cosmetic purchase unless you were playing co-op, Erewhon's social space solves that problem.
Weapon Blue-print - The reason this game has you constantly replacing your weapon is so that you are encouraged to purchase materials and weapon blue-prints instead of grinding for materials and or trying to find the weapons. The only surprise to me is that the weapon blue-prints level up with you. I guess they figured it would press the MTX line to hard if they added levels to blue-prints.
Always Online to Play - You forgot to mention this nasty little addition to the Ghost Recon game. This was put in place partly to combat piracy but to also have control over the players ability to play teh game. You will not be bale to play GR Breakpoint unless Ubisoft deems it so. You can pay full price for this game with the intention of sin player only action but if you do anything that violates Ubisofts Terms of Service so they ban you from uplay you will loose the ability to play any game from Ubisoft (on PC) that requires a persistent connection to their servers.
A less important aspect to the always online is that its required for the social space in Erewhon to work. It also provides ubisopft with a way to data mine all your actions in the game to study you and create a profile so they can best tailor sales to you. Its all psychology, figuring out how to best sale to someone by studying what they do.
Great Post!
Good review. While I don't necessarily agree with everything, it's very refreshing to read a thoughtful, balanced review that's neither a vitriolic, rage filled rant or a fawning denial of the issues that the game does have. Thanks for taking the time to write & post this.
as always Chris, great post, adding some stuff:
generators CAN'T be disabled with a EMP, in Wildlands this was possible
someone can hear FOOT STEPS when you use Panther class, even with the perks and gear that give you stealth boost of 100+
photomode is a copy and paste from ACO, very limited, wish they had the one like in wildlands with lot of options
you can actually enjoy the game once you reach level 250, disable loot markers and stick with the weapons you like, even when are 2 levels below 252 (still no difference)
i have to disagree on this and the wildlife brings it alive, the sound of birds and other animals make a great ambiance but just like in Wildlands there isn't wildlife presence
It was pretty satisfying finishing a region in Wildlands. That is definitely absent in this game.
I would add that the Azreal mechanic needs an overhaul, so the wolves actually hunt you. There doesn't seem to be a lot of fairness in that system. Unidad was fair and pretty fun sometimes and probably my favorite part of that game.
The game has very rough controls in general. Everything from getting into a car to picking up bodies to grabbing intel to climbing stairs makes me feel like I'm playing a PS2 game. Sometimes you can't even enter doorways if you're crouched; you have to stand up to do it. And then the cover mechanics; people want the switch stance button back and they should add it, but I'm actually happy that they didn't in the first patch because it's the system itself that needs fixing. They could have just added the switch button back in and called it done. The adjustments they made are much better but it still needs work. The game isn't hard; it's hard to play.
Good post.
Thank you for taking the time to post this message. While the constructive feedback is best I do hope everything is being read even the very salty comments as sometimes buried under that salt are some good points. SOme just are so frustrated they find it hard to not voice that (or in this case message that) when they provide feedback.Originally Posted by AI BLUEFOX Go to original post
All it really takes is a simple response like this to let everyone know that we hear you and we know we have some challenges ahead. Basically anything that doesn't sound like it's boilerplate response from the PR department. I have been part of THE DIVISIONS ETF group for a few years and I can tell you that I know Ubisoft developers give a damn about their games and that they read thru these posts (and on reddit) but the average gamer out their, Ubisofts customers have no clue about this. They can only go on what they see and that usually means whatever rumors pickup the most support; things like the devs never play their own games or the devs never read stuff anyway so whats the point.
I'm also glad to see the Delta company is involved like this. I was initially signed up for the Delta thing and then a few months back we got an email saying we needed to re-sign up and when I went to do it the categories were different and I felt like none listed fit my profile as I'm not into cosplay and I don't do streaming or youtube so I opted out. Its actions by people like you for GRBP and the ETF group for THE DIVISION that bridge that gap that need that bridge.
Thanks again!
Like everyone before me- I think this post is the best one I've seen that captures the biggest issues I have.
I don't think "Ubisoft apologists" are going to come in here contradicting anything since it was well communicated and not inflammatory at any level. Apologists usually take some offense to people who come in and say "This game ****ing sucks, it's a travesty" blah blah blah.
Yeah yeah, we know... move along.
I'm not an apologist but I understand what they despise- and a well executed, constructive post with ample organized thought processes laid out in an easy to follow fashion is not it.
A great write up indeed Chris.
Like yourself I'm around the same gear score and same time put in and also like yourself play with hud off and self constraints, trying to ignore the obviously unfinished elements and just enjoy the game for what it is but I have reached my own Breakpoint.
I uninstalled it today and gave the game to a friend to keep as it was starting to really annoy me while playing (I just couldn't take another NPC telling me to get out of their safe space) and that isn't what gaming's about.
I really hope it will become a classic like Wildlands but I can't see it TBH, the whole game, from story to implementation, is just so far removed from what the franchise is meant to be that I really can't see it becoming one, which is a real shame.
They have a great ip with Ghost Recon, with all the great ideas and suggestions from the community over the years you would think that with Ubisoft game developing skills they could have made a game that surpassed Wildlands and be an instant winner, not this hodgepodge of all Ubi's games that seems to have taken many steps back from WL.
