Low performance on Asus ROG Strix RTX 2070 in Assassin's Creed Odyssey

    Hello,
I'm experiencing strange behaviour from AC Odyssey. Despite using high end graphics card, I'm getting 30fps max, sometimes even that drops to 15 or so. I'm getting this only in this game. I installed Shadow of the Tomb Raider. All settings are ultra (including ray tracing) and I'm getting between 50 and 60fps with ease. Have anyone experienced this as well?

My graphics card is paired with i5-6600K and 16GB of RAM.

I would appreciate any piece of advise.

Thanks and kind regards to everyone.

I should add that the most recent drivers are installed and the performance is equally bad with both ultra and low settings.

This game is very cpu demanding a requires a very fast cpu. You have got a cpu bottleneck which is causing very poor performance.

Upgrade your cpu and you will see much better performance in this game guaranteed. I would recommend a ryzen 3600 or i7 8700k. If you have the money buy a i9 9900k and you won't be disapointed.

Do you have two 8gb of memory in dual channel or just one 16gb .stick? You need dual channel memory for best performance.

The things is the game run more or less smoothly on GTX 1060, before the upgrade, so the CPU is ok. Other games are running better than ok. The problem must be in a game itself, Ubisoft should look into that.

And I using 3 channels for RAM, 2 for 4GBs and one for 8.

Your making a poor assumption that it isn't a cpu bottleneck. My personal opinion is that your issue is definitely a cpu bottleneck. I can explain why you are getting worse performance with your new higher end RTX 2017 compared to your gtx 1060 gpu.

Let me try to explain what I mean. Faster graphics cards require a faster CPU to keep up with it otherwise you have a cpu bottleneck. This explains why you had better performance on your gtx 1060, your cpu was able to keep up with it.

Now you have upgraded to an rtx 2070 your old i5 is no longer able to keep up with your faster graphics card. So I guarantee this is your issue you need to buy a new cpu.

Here is a video explaining about how a gpu can bottleneck your cpu.

I get the idea, but it's strange I'm getting bad performance only in one game. Any other game, including Shadow of Tomb Raider, with Ray Tracing set on ultra, runs more than smoothly. I will research more and maybe think of upgrading the CPU as well.

    Thanks and kind regards

Yea well this game is very CPU demanding and badly optimized. I'm willing to bet your will get at least a 30 to 40 fps increase with a cpu upgrade at least in this game You will probably get a massive performance increase in the games that you say run smoothly as well.

What speed memory do you have? just so you know higher speed memory like 3200 mhz in dual channel makes a big different in games.

From personal experience I went from getting 20 to 25 fps with an athlon x4 860k and gtx 1060 to a constant 50 fps with a ryzen 1600x cpu upgrade. I got an increase of over 30 or 40 fps just from upgrading my cpu.

    My specs
    ryzen 1600x
    gtx 1060 6gb
    1tb hard drive
    16 gb 3000 mhz memory

I have 3000Mhz memory as well. For now I won't upgrade the CPU, I will ditch AC since there is nothing much interesting now. I'll see how it performs with RDR2.

This isn't a hardware issue. It's a software one. The 30 FPS max is an indication of that.

I had similar issues to yours, what fixed it was closing all my FPS monitoring programs and overclocking programs, namely MSI Afterburner and Riva Tuner. Hope this helps.
