Larger-scale battles add to the immersion where players would feel like they are in an actual war or medieval battle, at least where history normally tells us there were hundreds to thousands of soldiers involved in such scenarios. While the game can't handle those numbers we would like a game mode that brings us as close to that experience as possible. I and many others were hoping Breach would have done this but it retained the 4v4 format.Originally Posted by UbiYubble Go to original post
Gameplay-wise, large scale battles allow players to split into smaller units without turning into individuals rapidly. This reduces severe fragmentation across larger maps and retains teamplay. This is good for reducing Xv1 ganks and the need for revenge. Other benefits include access to new strategies from having larger numbers, which would also provide new experiences in itself.
Larger-scale battles would give opportunities to implement new features such as real-time horse riding and the combat that comes with it. The campaign touched on this a little but the player was on the receiving end of the offense while on foot...
...and there was the chase segment in the Raider's chapter but, like the Orochi vs the soldiers on horseback, that was heavily scripted and linear.
Other features include commanding archers and troops, using various siege engines such as ballistae, catapults, trebuchets, and even those ballista bridges from the campaign in an unscripted fashion. The early concepts of For Honor did touch on these aspects:
If larger-scale battles were to be implemented, could they be related to the Faction War? It would be nice if territories were take in real-time rather than using both assets and turn-based mechanics. For example, the faction that has the most battles won on a given map(territory) would hold those grounds in the next faction battle.
I think larger scale battles would actually be kinda fun. Bigger maps, More players(6v6 or 8v8 if possible), perhaps some more capture points that add bonuses or maybe a point that periodically sends out squads of pikemen to A and C.
I don't have many ideas about this, but it honestly sounds like it would be a nice addition.
As much as I'd like modes with alot more players, I don't think the balancing and mechanics of the fighting system of For Honor works out favorably to larger scale. Like I can't see it working out very well at all the more I think about it. You'd be target swapping to unintended targets constantly, classes and feats would stack even more obnoxiously, so on and so on.
Maybe they can throw one at the wall on the Events list someday as a YOLO, see if it sticks, but I'd reckon it'd die out fairly quickly for the simple reasons I stated.
I suggest a test run for larger battles.
Just a temporary event of 8v8 or 10v10 battles on a full Breach map with zones added in the main lane.
I am not convinced this is remotely close enough to what you were thinking of, but it would give a general overview of how a match with more players in it would play out.
And if this concept is not fruitful then how about larger scale battles with more than 2 teams?
There's a more detailed post in the same concept. It's good. Check it out.
