In the OTT , when your chopper went down, there were a group of enemies that turned up to crash looking for survivors. I though this was a great introduction to being hunted especially as you didn't have any bandages and you aim with the pistol was poor due to injuries. You then needed to find the bandages and syringes to heal yourself, again as another introduction to the mechanics of the game. I felt this made the trip to Erewhan more impactful than now. The whole first act was drama especially with the restricted healing and no health regen.
