I loved Ghost Recon Wildlands. Breakpoint needs to be more like it's older sibling. There are several major changes that have been made to this newer installment in the franchise that make it a major letdown.
When starting up the game, I'm greeted to a bunch of preset heads to choose from for my character. None of which resembled how my character looked in Wildlands and there was no way to adjust the faces to make them more appealing (they suffered from an obvious lack of love at best, being beaten half to death with an ugly stick at worst). Nor could I choose my clothing, tattoos, etc which I used in Wildlands. So, already not a great start.
My character is the sole survivor of a helicopter crash, fine, I can believe that. They have major injuries and can barely move (hunched over, hobbling along). Again, believable. Then I use a bandage, wrapping my arms and legs up, and suddenly I am healed. I can walk perfectly, I can aim and run and get into gun fights. It's a miracle! Your messiah has nothing on the healing powers of these bandages!
So I proceed through the jungle, taking it low and slow. Trying to maintain cover in case of people searching for survivors. Sure enough, there are patrols out and about. All bragging about how easy it was to kill the "legendary" Ghosts. Cautiously, I wait for the group to separate so I can take down individuals. But I messed up. I fired ajd alerted the patrols. But, fortunately for me, the so-called Wolves have no teeth. I killed a patrol of 5 guys (on max difficulty) when they were within 15 m of me. Not a single one detected me and found my location. So I'm taking it they are blind, deaf and stupid? Or they were... now they're just dead.
Eventually I find a new gun. And I am prompted to view the menus. Oh. My. Make it stop! The menus are now over-complicated. Nothing like the friendly and easy to use ones in Wildlands. Now there's menus within menus so you can menu while you menu. And there's an equipment tab AND a loadout tab (I assume is purely cosmetic) and they're separated by the mission tab.... can I ask where the logic is in this? Upon enterring dialogue for the first real time, I was also shown that either the script changed or someone just wasn't paying attention when writing the subtitles (the conversation in question was when Nomad first met and spoke to the leader of the oh-so-convenient rebel faction that just so happens to be made of minorities on an otherwise rich people only island).
And that's when I notice: levelled gear. No thank you. Take it back. A gun is a gun. A grenade is a grenade. I'm not buying into "you are in a dangerous area with high-level enemies. Level your gear up and return." That's not how a tactical sim should work. If I have a "weak" gun, it's still going to hurt if I shoot a bad guy with it. This "feature" NEEDS to be removed. Ghost Recon isn't an RPG. Levelled enemies and guns are not why I played and loved GRW. A dangerous region should just have better equipped enemies (SAMs, APCs, etc.) not level 100 guns vs my level 1 gun.
I played this beta for a couple of hours, mostly spent exploring because the game just didn't play how I had expected (and hoped). What was the final straw for me in the story (not that I got that far) was how my character witnessed the traitor kill one of my squad members from GRW, yet it still says in my objectives that I need to discover who betrayed the Ghosts. So my character is apparently also suffering from a severe case of logic loss. I can't even blame the helicopter crash for that, since the bandages I used had obviously been made with the elixir of life, based on their healing properties.
In short, I had high hopes for Breakpoint. I've been waiting impatiently for it (even put it on preorder as soon as possible). But now I'm tempted to go and cancel the preorder and keep playing Wildlands. And that's really disappointing for me.
Other issues I had included: random shops you can buy gear from, dismantling old guns while in the middle of nowhere and somehow making new guns out of them. That's some Fallout level logic there - I'll scrap my pistol to build a better sniper rifle. You have pristine clothing and gear after a helo crash and have to level up to unlock damaged gear (yay logic). You can't crawl through ankle-deep water, so have to kneel and make yourself more visible to get through a 1 foot wide puddle before you can go prone again...
