Players cancelling preorders because of games IDENTITY CRISIS!!! Heres my $.02
OK devs, so I wrote a rather lengthy "review" from the last test and it seems all my critique was tossed in the garbage. Sad being it was one of the higher rated posts.
Well aside from all that, Breakpoint has an identity crisis that I hope can be cleared up for launch so lets get to it.
Many of us in the community pointed out that this game has great potential with its beautifully crafted biomes, improved enemy AI, and more realistic features like the new bandage system and traversal of the world. It seems like you heard us by creating a more immersive world to play in we are happy about that. So whats the problem? Well, You have all these great things coming together but then you added systems which break immersion and dont fit the game youve currently built. It was my BIGGEST TALKING POINT from my last post and will remain so. TIERED/LEVEL gear/items. This has no place in this game. Forget the fact that its a Tom Clancy "Ghost Recon" title if you can but these elements COMPLETELY BREAK all the realism and immersion you have masterfully created. These weapon and gear tiers/lvls are ludicrous.
Weapons: All of the weapons you have pulled from reality and put in your game already have data showing how they preform. Now with your tier system, all that means nothing. Youve included different rarity weapons that now have "buffs" etc which is very immersion breaking and pulls me out of the good time I was having. Now I need to look at all these weapons ive accumulated and rather chose which I would prefer to use, now they have unrealistic, nonsensical buffs that came from being a different rarity so I feel forced to use weapons and clothing I dont want to equip.
The Fix? Well I mentioned last time that I would be fine if instead of the maddening tier system if you used caliber/ammo type (AP/Inc/etc.) Again we are on an island developing future tech weapons. Why cant the weapons we know be just that. Add tiers to future weapons that dont exist, that could actually have said properties of "buffs" etc. It feels like a win win. Aside from the system being immersion breaking its forcing me to not play how I want. If ive found a weapon early in the game that I enjoy using, I need to replace it, and replace it, and replace it, which in turn forces me to change my play style of how I want to play. Why would I want to play a game that doesnt let me play how I want to???
Clothing: Pretty much the same problem as the weapons. Why has clothing gained magical tiers/lvls too? Not only does it use the same out of place system as the weapons but now there are TWO screens for clothing! UGH. I have clothing I loot that has stats (which no one wants) and than I have clothing I buy or get rewarded that has only effects my look. This is pretty terrible.
The fix? Make clothing exactly what it is, just something to wear. There can be different level armor all the way up to high tech tiered armor thats being produced on the island we are on. Plate carriers/body armor etc should be the only gear you wear that provides any buffs/debuffs.
The hub/base doesnt feel right. At least have it populated with NPCs and not other players. We are only a few of the survivors whose choppers got downed. This further breaks any realism you have successfully created.
The audio in the game is fantastic, aside from how the vehicles sound. The engine sounds do not match the performance of the vehicle and they sound a bit exaggerated. Maybe some audio tuning on those to make them feel more responsive and realistic.
The fauna is still lacking. This beautiful world doesn't feel alive. There should be more fauna in the wold.
The only animation I think still looks kinda janky is the pistol running animation.
The Menus still need to be more streamlined. I did like in wildlands how I could push a button and be immediately taken to the customization screen. Also the weapon smith felt better as it took a full screen. Everything feels very cluttered. The menus do not look appealing.
Conclusion
Youve created a fantastic semi/realistic shooter that looks beautiful and is immersive. You have also destroyed everything beautiful, broke all immersion, and any realism that the team has put together by implementing a tiered weapon/gear system. I cant recall any games that have had identity problems that have fared well.
Dont shoot this game in the foot. I feel the community would rather wait and receive a great game than a confused game.
