UPlay wants an an activation key for this free game? I don't have one, so I cannot claim ownership. Am I missing something or is my previous disgust / frustration with UPlay just being reinforced yet again?

The only For Honor game I see on your account is a Steam Open Beta, and that version would likely show as needing a CD key.

Please let me know if you are able to sign up for the free Uplay version using this link.
