i'm fast enough that I can let go of the held input to input something else and then go back to it. So I don't need to claw that often.

Lightspam is these characters offense, they were sped up to stop an easily accessible counter existing against them. Going offensive is just as important in defending yourself as countering succesfully. I learned it when I switched to pk, assassin mirrors are even more about succesful attacks and killing faster than the enemy.

I understand your feelings. I was pretty good at parrying in the slower meta, but now, I also struggle with it. I choose to block everything I can, press the offense, and if I see a clear pattern, I attempt to parry preemptively, but I win entire duels without parrying a single time. Getting 4 succesful block out of 5 attempts is better than getting a parry out of 5 tries.
But getting 1 or 2 blocks out of 5 is not good enough and forces me to switch to offense. Then, when in offense, my success is entirely determined by my opponent's ability to parry me. And, more importantly, beating someone by spamming my light attacks is simply not fun.

Part of the problem is some characters have 400ms lights on top and against them I should be default guarding top, but I'm not because I don't know who they are or how to regularly defend against them. The second problem is that I'm not currently fast enough to switch from one stance to another as reaction, but knowing what a foe is likely going to do based on what their kit suggests that they do is helpful enough to make those attacks more reactable.

400ms lights didn't exist in 2017 except pks zone which comes from a fixed direction.

Honestly, whether it's 400ms or 500ms it's beside the point.

You're having a Mandela effect. PK was the only 400ms light hero (chain and zone) back then, and I very much doubt you were able to block and parry them or that you encountered enough PK's to the point where the speed was engraved in your mind. Pace of the game was overall much slower in 2017. You're seeing 400ms lights for basically the first time now since they're so common, that's why you're taken aback.

As for your question, go into practice against AI and set it to use only light attacks, while unchecking the ''move cooldown'' box . Choose Orochi as the AI. This won't exactly be that authentic, since bots don't have latency plus they never delay their chain lights, but they will imitate the average spammer, which is what you want anyway. You'll get adjusted to the tempo soon enough. Be aware that you cannot react to fully delayed 400ms lights, and neither can the best players. They are meant to be prediction blocked/parried.

On a final note, since I saw you were already considering this, I'll just reaffirm it - switch to PC. It's how the game should look and play.

I'm not the one who was saying they were 400ms, I'm just saying I'm having an issue with light attack spamming which is a lot more common now than it was when I was playing last. That, or I'm in a different bracket this time that's just spamming lights. And yes, there were many PK players, just like now with Hulda or as I imagine it was when every new character came out. There was always a PK in a battle and occasionally there were 2 so it wasn't unrealistic to have a strategy against them.

I'm looking at the list and there's very little 400ms as an opener anyway. Lawbringer and Shaolin top lights, so that's just one new character to hold top guard against. Otherwise maybe it's just orochi that's messing me up. It doesn't matter if it's 400ms or 500ms, it's not the numbers that I know. Looking at the numbers, it's mostly 500ms.

The main problem on console really is just plain old lag. I've been playing since launch and once they added ping times you can see how bad people are lagging. Played against several players overseas this weekend and all of their lights and even heavies were going right through my blocks. Frames were skipping and the best part was when I was able to throw a JJ over a ledge he mysteriously reappeared suddenly with revenge from below and was back on top! Average ping times were above 50ms with some kids lagging at over 115 ms. The scoreboard usually showed the players lagging the most with the most kills. GB and Counter GB are very inconsistent and they were GB right through my light attacks which is complete BS. It's pretty much just which ever teammates you're matched up with and the laggiest team usually won. Went one game 11-1 and won no problems. Then suddenly the next game nothing is working and went 0-7 and teammates were around the same. Also Revenge seemed very inconsistent taking much longer for mine to build when getting ganked, but my opponents were getting theirs after only a few touches! Just doesn't make much sense these days!

Most light attacks are 500 MS now (many were 600 ms back in 2017) & the mid chain on many is 400ms. The main key is to learn the ones with a chain & to either block the first 500ms light and stop access to the 400ms, or to kinda give up on the 400ms after the 500 ms light gets through and look to parry/punish the finisher On PS 4 400ms are almost impossible to stop outside of a lucky parry or a block

    Against LB/PK guard top
