Bring back old school Ghost Recon?
Hey guy, just curious if anyone has any opinions on this particular idea. I know that this is a forum specifically for the new GR game but my idea pertains to the future of this franchise. This is long winded but please hear me out. I am really seeking some discussion on this matter.
So I grew up playing the original GR games. I played the first one on PC and then GR and GR: Island Thunder on XBOX. I can't even express the amount of fun and immersion that I felt while playing these games. I know that today, these older games would feel extremely outdated and sluggish and may not be as fun anymore. I played a lot of GR2 and that wasn't too bad, but it just didn't feel as good as the originals. After GR2, I almost completely lost any interest in playing a GR title. The games got far to ridiculous to me and I lost almost all feeling of immersion and the feel of a "tactical military shooter" didn't exist anymore. I will admit that I have always been a big fan of Tom Clancy titles from the movies, books, and original games. I was very military minded and had even served my time in the military. So I very much enjoy a more tactical based shooter game rather than the hollywood COD crap that has the minds of kids today in gaming communities. Not talking trash on those games, you like what you like.
My issue here is that Red Storm Entertainment did a brilliant job with the original GR and Rainbow games. The feeling and immersion while I played these games was phenomenal at the time. After Ubisoft completely took this titles over, they really started loosing that feel. I'll admit that Wildlands did bring the franchise back "towards" it's roots, but it is still very far off. I really think that it would be a great move if Ubisoft would examine the older games and bring this franchise back to what it used to be.
If any of you have played the original GR and RB6 games, could you imagine if these games were remade with today's technology, graphics, and game mechanics? Personally I think we would be looking at a masterpiece. The newer games try to be far to fancy and filled with in depth plot lines. I understand that plot lines are enjoyable and entertaining. I think these games go way to far today with the Hollywood action stuff and far fetched ideas.
A few things that I feel would really bring back some immersion in this franchise:
1. Map or mission planning that was involved with the original games (setting way points, direction of travel and observation) Placing individual squad mates or teams to move to different areas, watch different directions, and
2. Creating teams and squad layout. Setting 2 teams of 3 or 3 teams of two etc. Also Including weapons, specialties etc.
3. More command of squad mates for tactical planning of missions. Also being able to select to have squad mates rules of engagement.
4. Permanent deaths. I remember in the older games how I can start the game from the beginning with a squad of 6 characters. I would try to eventually complete the entire game with those same 6 characters and upgrade their stats as I progress through the game. I was actually bummed out if I lost a character. I felt a greater concern to try and play as smart as possible and bring all those favorite characters up. If one of the characters was injured, they remained injured until they had time to heal. If one got shot in the leg, they would limp until you left them out for a mission to recuperate. You used to actually have the option to care about your characters.
5. No ridiculous movie story lines. You used to be a special forces soldier operating during a conflict. There was an over all conflict that you were part of and each mission you played brought you one step closer to winning the overall operation. You were a soldier that received a mission briefing, selected your team and layout for the particular mission, and you executed the mission.
That's all. Please do not tell me to go play Arma. I don't play on PC anymore and that is not the point of this post. The point is that this game has drifted so far away from the roots that originally made it unique and great and I would like to see for Ubisoft to fix this. I feel like pushing back to its roots may actually save this franchise. Its no secret that the player base has dropped insanely quick for this franchise. And most of the players that I have talk to that stopped playing have said that it is actually related to the same issues that I brought her.
