I feel the key here is CHOICE. Devs need to include more choice in games.
So for example when starting a new game give the player a choice whether they want fast travel enabled or disabled. This will keep both kind of gamer happy.
Same with an Immersion Mode. Provide full HUD control over EVERY HUD element but also provide one single menu control for HUDless play that will instantly disable all HUD elements for those of us that want to play without super hero powers (x-ray vision , wallhack, tagging, alert clouds etc).
We all know it's never going to happen. Games like Red Dead Redemption 2 may feature fast travel fees, but it is too much of a nuisance. There's a reason why Far Cry 4 introduced auto drive and Far Cry 5 introduced air drop. Ubisoft learned their lesson after Far Cry 2 (And other countless open world Ubisoft games), especially how some players would call the game 'Far Drive 2' back then. Anything that hinders gameplay will not be present for future games.Originally Posted by SofaJockey Go to original post

Game - is a set of rules that allow you to overcome inconveniences without cheating.
It is very inconvenient to drive the ball around the field with your feet, without the help of your hands.
The field is quite large.....and it's very inconvenient.
But all the salt of the game in that inconvenience.
Any attempt to use hands and to make the game more convenient is strictly forbidden.
It is cheating.
Cheating - is a worst enemy of every game.
Cheating - is a game killer.
In our case, big open world and its distances that we have to overcome - is inconvenience. The salt of open world game.
Fast travelling - is cheating.
In ideal, using Fast Travelling or any other cheating we should see this...
"You're cheating, my friend. No way!"
Open world game is open world game.
It must have its rules regarding to open world.
The problem of present day games - developers of these games begin to forget what a Game is.
They're making their games more and more convenient.
More and more convenience .... it kills the game!
Trying to make the game convenient they kill the game itself.
Arrow on the road showing how to get here or there......is cheating.
Mark on the screen showing where something is located ....is cheating.
Many many cheatings in every open world game.
Many many open world killers.
Finding objects, searching....this iconvenience is also a part of the game.
Something that can make the game more exciting and immsersive.
But they kill it in order to please the gamers, making the game only more and more convenient.
As a result they kill an open world....
And as a result they have "What a lousy game!" posts.
Making the game convenient - is evil of evils today.

I guess some may forget the very essence of the word "game". Anyone who spent hours on foot on FC2 because they crashes their car in the first tree around is thankful for fast travel. If i want to piss salt blocks and enjoy it, i play Dark Souls. Only way i'm thinking about a no fast travel Far Cry would be a survivor like mode like the one of Primal. Hard playthrough for the ones who want it, but not a mandatory one.
Developers, think for yourselves!
You've made one of the biggest Far Cry open world not to ruin it with numerous Fast Travel points all around.
Gamers will always choose the path of least resistance.
They will use Fast Travel at every opportunity.
Using Fast Travel much they will spoil the game for themselves. ( without wanting it)
They will spoil the experience of the open world.
Open world experience, the feeling of open world - is one of the most important component of the open world game.
That feeling of an open world can give only long-term movement around the world.
It's necessary to make it so - it should be in the interests of the gamers not to use Fast Travel.
Using Fast Travel they should lose something.
Money, resources, random events....or something else.
Developers, you should motivate gamers not to use Fast Travel!
Yara is in blockade.
There should be problems with everything.....even with Fast Travel.
Never used a vehicle in FC5 and i'm not complaining there are some as i'm sure players do enjoy those. Best it could be is to have a game mode without it that would be optional.Originally Posted by GameGuru2018 Go to original post
You have to be very special to want to force others to have fun in a certain way by removing something. All modern open world games have fast travel, and using it is a player's choice. Just like being sneaky, using long range or whatever option there is in terms of gameplay.
If you don't like it, don't use it and have fun your way. Let others game as they please. And even if they chose the path of convenience, who are you to think that this shall be considered as something to punish by canceling optional fast travel because your personal opinion is that it ruins the immersion? Who are you to tell how people shall enjoy their game?
The thing with Far Cry 2 is that you have to travel to and from a bus stop in order to fast travel. You go to the nearest bus stop, fast travel to another bus stop that is nearest to your objective, then drive from the bus stop to the objective.Originally Posted by WildCassowary Go to original post
I don't even want this kind of discussion in my thread.

Developers should educate gamers and their taste - how it would be better to play their game.
They should push gamer in the right direction.
How to play to get more pleasure from the game.
It should be taught.
How to get more pleasure should be taught.
Even how to get pleasure from sex was taught.
Kama Sutra was written.
All is needed - developers should slightly push gamers in the right direction.
A carrot and a stick......a stick and a carrot.
After all, it's so natural to pay for Fast Travelling.
The faster and the farther you travel - the more it costs.
Like in real life.
Why such pleasure as Fast Travel should be free?!
