And the 3D map is more of a shortcut so then don't need to draw a 2D one by hand.
I have to be more specific, shouldn't I? You can't exactly set waypoints, fast travel, or easily zoom in and out in Far Cry 2. You'd have to travel to a bus stop in order to fast travel, have missions assign waypoints for you, and you have three different map variants:
    1. Viewing all 9 zones whether you're in the north or south
    2. Viewing 1 of the 9 zones
    3. Viewing a specific region within these zones

From Far Cry 3 to New Dawn, you could just zoom in and out anywhere. You simply select a fast travel point you unlocked than you traveling to the nearest bus stop. While collecting diamonds and other collectibles in Far Cry 2, you have rely on how frequent the green light blinks which can be time consuming. From Far Cry 3 to New Dawn, you buy in-game maps to locate the collectibles for you and they are shown as icons in the map. When you are looking at your map in Far Cry 2, the game is not paused and you are most likely to be constantly harassed by patrolling trucks. The game is paused when you are looking at your map in Far Cry 3 to New Dawn. Since you cannot set up waypoints in Far Cry 2, you are more likely to pull out your map frequently. They brought back the radar (Which is now a minimap) in Far Cry 3, which was present in Far Cry 1 and Far Cry Instincts. It's more convenient to look at your minimap than a handheld GPS device you'd have to pull out. While they did remove the minimap in Far Cry 5, the compass from Far Cry Instincts returns.

And what do you mean the 3D map is more of a shortcut? It's still 'drawn' by hand and by making it 3D, it's more detailed. There's more effort in designing a 3D map than a 2D one.

You can just as well set waypoint and do all the rest on a in-game map, it's just a matter of changing the context of the keys upon map inspection. If you think about it, the modern-version control scheme can be left as is whether it is full-screen on not. The Hunter Call of the Wild has the best of both worlds for example.
The 3D map is indeed a shortcut. Devs use the map of the game as a base line, lower details of some models, flip it in an isometric view, add some points of lights here and there for night time then add the usual icons. Done.

You do realize that sounds like more effort than simply drawing it, right? In fact, there are a lot of games where it simply detects the color of the terrain and would draw out the map on its own, saving level designers the time and effort. This has been a thing for at least 26 years if I recall correctly.

Anyways, I do welcome the idea of a handheld map and GPS to return for future Far Cry games. I just don't think it's ever going to happen.

Far Cry 2 map even today looks good.

I won't be against such map.

I think ability to stop the game by calling menu or map - is cheating.
I like how it was made in Dark Souls 3 - you couldn't stop the process.

    Even in Outlast....developers missed it.
In the most terrifying moments many gamers just called menu to stop the game.
Without that opportunity the game would be more scary.

When you know that you can't stop it by your will - situation is more immersive and exciting.

That also. My main complaint though is the fact that it takes you out of the game. That doesn't happen in FC2 nor in Metro Exodus.

    METRO EXODUS

I would also be willing to accept an hybrid of the two which is what you find in The Hunter Call of the Wild

Yes. What is the advantage of such maps?

You're not out of the process.

    You need to be attentive.
While you're looking at the map ..... the enemy can see you and attack, human or animal.
    It creates additional excitement.

Especially when you're studying the map, for example, and some beast start chewing your leg or you start catching bullets from afar.

So, you're trying to hide somewhere.....you're looking at the map - your ears open....tension.

To create more tension developers may make us use the map more often in some filled with enemies location.
It can be a complex location where we have to check the map more frequent.

For me, Call of the wild map's size is better than ME.
Process of map checking is more exciting. You're focused more on the map. Like in real life map checking.
Something is going behind the map, you see it by peripheral vision, but your attention is on the map.
To see something exactly you have to remove the map, like in reality.

In ME you can see rather well what is going on behind even without removing.

Sudden attack while map checking would be more scary and exciting in the second case.
First moment you will not understand who or what exactly attacked you.

(It would be better, for instance, if the animal could tear up the map when it attacks us during map checking.
Or some "skunk" could grab our map and run away.)

FC2 map made the strongest impression on me, when I played the game for the first time.

    My wishes for FC6:

    1. Detachable stationary machine guns - it is possible in Just Cause games, occupies both hands and disallows running and any activity which involves hands (no pressing buttons or meelee combat until the gun is dropped)

    2. More ammo types for the smallest grenade launcher (Incendiary grenades, EMP grenades - could disable vehicles without harming enemies, cluster grenades) This is one of my favourite weapons in the series and in a combo with The Buzzer in FC4 I simply loved it.

    3. More remote explosives at once (I mean MORE, let's say 10-15). The game has really attractive explosions, I'd love to see more of them. The same with mines.

    4. I've mentioned it somewhere on the forum, but vehicles could ride faster. Driving in current FC games works only as a way to travel for me. I really like to drive and I spend a lot of my game time on driving, and trying to reach remote locations. FC games have nice maps for some off-road tourism or even rallying. It could involve TPP camera as well.

Someone wrote that there will be a KGB agent in the game or something like that....

There is an old soviet song about Cuba: "Cuba - my love"
It can be his musical accompaniment, for example.

Or it can play while one of the outposts' liberation, or in one of the missions with the agent...

Song is rather cheerful and inspiring.
    Good for shooting or chasing.

There are two variants of the song.

Every is good in its own way!

    This. Joseph Kobzon's.

    And this. Muslim Magomayev's.

    More emotional!

Oh, sorry! Mistake! It needs to be more precise.

It was two variants of Magomayev's song.

They're two Big Singers with wide-ranging voices and ability to change it according to song. Sometimes you can get mixed up.

I've thought - if there is a KGB agent, if there are soviet weapons.....why it can't be some soviet song?!
At least somewhere in the background.
    Preferably in the topic.

    This is Kobzon's version!
    (But I like Magomayev's more.)

I've got back to FC4 recently and after some running here and there with and without open world mod, I'd like do add some of my thoughts:

I definitely preffered playing with all weapons available from the start. I know it would kill the gameplay a lot if some of the most powerful ones like MG42 (one hell of a gun!) were easily available from the start, but limit of availability shouldn't be related to campaign progress or number of liberated towers (I miss them as well).I believe it would work better with a combination of their high price (FC5 did it pretty well) with availability limited to specific shops. Additional option for HC players in gameplay options could work as well - players buy single gun, if it's lost while playing, or player dies, gun needs to be bought or found again.

I've also wanted to be able to modify weapon on the fly as Crysis did it - detachment of a silencer, or changing scope type doesn't really require going to a workshop or a gun store to be done.

Also some tweaks to weapon size and it's meaning could be added - As far as it's there (weapons are getting raised while being close to walls), I still can use LMGs in tight spaces without noticable difficulty. I almost don't use SMGs because of that, because they don't offer anything attractive but their size..
