I'm a firearms fanatic in real life so this thread is somewhat bias from the start.
But i'm curious to see if the community thinks that the in game firearm sounds could be tweaked for improvement?
For starters, I think the LMGs and the Shotguns are pretty acceptable in terms of working my sub woofer.
But the ARs, Rifles could use a tweak as I think they dont bark as loud as they should.
I think the DMRs and Sniper rifles could use a little more bass as well.
The thing that got me thinking about this is the Mounted weapons just sound more like a weed whacker than an actual firearm. The sound of the AKs in this game also have next to no bass and they just sound terrible.
I have know idea what guns sound like in real life so my opinion means little I guess but what I would add is on the PS4 through the TV speakers the sound of the guns is a bit dull, through my mic headphones though with super human hearing setting the guns sound so much better, more bass and oomph to them, the other sounds you hear through the headphones are great too, background noises, talking in the distance, shooting in the distance etc. things the TV speakers just don't output.
The bullet when it breaks the sound barrier and goes super sonic, yes it cracks. Stand right to the side of someone with an SBR or compensator in real life as they fire and you'll know what im asking them to tweak.Originally Posted by Tyran0sauruSTFU Go to original post
I agree with you though that within enclosed spaces things sound very appropriate including the echo, very realistic. I don't play on the PC so I have no access to the filesystem, i'm a PS4 console player.
The biggest issue I have with the gunfire sounds is that at a distance, they don't sound right. They sound like "generic_gun_sound.mp3." But when I get within render range, it changes to the correct one. Not game breaking, but it kind of takes away from the game experience.
Not to mention the people screaming in battle at a distance - it all sounds the same. Get up close to render range, and now there's more distinct dialogue. Again, not game breaking...but it the sounds just seem homogenized.
It's a minor complaint, but it feels tacked on. And when dealing with the visuals, it seems lacking.
Coming from a veteran of 8 years service and intimate knowledge of what it sounds like to shoot and be shot at, the weapon systems sound in this game are pretty crap. Shotguns have a throaty punch to them which is very satisfying, but the rest in general sound very .....subdued...
Your average AR has a nice "punch" after the shot in the real world which varies depending on variables, like grain count, barrel length, caliber of round fired, and the environment you fire it in. Firing a round in the open, or even dense areas, like say around tree's, and it's amazing how the soundwaves change. In a open courtyard, like an iraqi street for an example of my own, gunshots reverberate off buildings and retain a lot of punch because of the waves bouncing off hard objects and returning from various directions as they eventually lose the waves energy. If you went into a dense forest and fired off a round, another person 300m away may not even know you ever even fired a weapon at all because the waves were dispersed and absorbed by the foliage.
In the game, firing in buildings, alleyways, and enclosed courtyards, the sounds are great, there seems to be plenty of reverb, and you get a more "punchy" sound. But every other scenario, the weapons sound dull and toyish. The D.50 for example, it sounds like a pop gun. Has anybody at Massive or Ubisoft ever heard a .44 caliber round fired? Let alone a .50 AE. At close range to the weapon fired it feels like someone punching your lungs.
Your average 5.56 round uses 64 grains of powder and that combined with a 16" barrel and a factory muzzle device, meaning a muzzle compensator for example on the M16, you get a fairly decent sound. Its a nice punch of bass, with little reverb, and then a solid crack from the round breaking the sound barrier.
I think the weapons sounded better in D1 honestly. In D2 it feels like they had a sound guy use his imagination to fill in the sound bytes.
Your whole response was awesome. I dont mean to single out just one small sentence, but your very last sentance "the weapons sounded better in D1 honestly" I agree 100%. LMGs and Shotguns made my windows rattle when in combat.Originally Posted by jdkzombie Go to original post
Just to nitpick a little bit, the Tactical ACR in TD2 sounds TERRIBLE!!! In TD1, the Tactical ACR sounded almost too real at Full Auto fire. In TD2 it sounds more like a sewing machine that's angry.
The other reason I bring up the topic of Weapons SFX is just days before TD2 actually released, I saw a youtube video, released by UBI, about all the sound designers and what they contributed to the game. I have so much respect for these guys, they honestly did a FANTASTIC JOB. But when I actually got my hands on the game and started collecting the weapons and started combat engagements it was kind of a letdown some of the sound from the weapons.
I should probably come clean and acknowledge the fact that, yes, if a gun 'sounds' stupid I wont use it. Yes I"m an idiot... because AKs make for nice builds in this game but i rarely use them because they just sound so awfully inaccurate and borderline obnoxious.
I was just hoping perhaps this feedback might actually get back to Massive. The ARs and the AKs in TD2 just sound terrible and if they sounded more 'real' it would just put a real nice polish on combat engagements in the game. Just a wishful suggestion for TD3 as well. Just imagine if Battlefield or Call of Duty SFX we're crap, they wouldn't feel as immersive as they should be would they?
Sometime ago i made post in Suggestions, but guess i can repost it here as its directly related to this thread..
I have only one simple question, how the hell in such great game gunshot sounds became so horribly bad comparing to The Division 1??? Maybe, just maybe somebody from development team or maybe community managers will see this and give some feedback.
I was so hyped try next Division game where errors are taken into account. Game is about looting and shooting guns, which are close to real ones and game franchise based on Tom Clancy after all. Examining promo materials noticed this one "Tom Clancy’s The Division 2: Behind the Scenes | The Sound of The Division 2" That alone gave confidence that shooting experience will be amazing.
How i was "surprised" when i finally managed to try most of the guns. Yeah, feeling is good, but how dull and shallow they sound if compare to Division 1!!! P416 or MK16 sound like a fart, as the rest of the assault rifles, some guns sound totally fake or edited so hard. Do you remember the sound of firing Lightweight M4? It was boomy with metal click and clank, like a thunder with echo on the streets, it felt super satisfying, just firing at some random mob behind the car until its full with holes, no tires and mirrors. In Division 2 they missing that echo (even though most of the time you on empty streets), bass and sounds are muffed or something.
Here is some examples and comparisons of Division 1 and Division 2 firing sounds.
As a owner of AR-15 10.3'' myself i can defiantly say that sounds in Division 1 sound closer to real ones.
Here are few examples how it sounds in life:
1. Be warned, this is how this @hit sounds indoors.
2. And this is how real HK416 sounds outdoors in full auto/semi.
To be honest and i don't want to be rude, my pee splash in toilet sounds more aggressive than current gunshots in Division 2. And lets be honest, sound effects and especially firing sounds is considerable part of that shootout satisfaction in game.
That's the shootout, that's the sound, that's how it sounds on streets! Start from 5:20sec.
I'm not saying game should be so real, but as its Tom Clancy and it shooting is main mechanic in game, it should be super good to keep people playing it. And if developers plan to use game as a service for a few years, i would recommend for them to record sounds again or at least use from Division 1. Hell, i bet Ubisoft have some studious in USA where guns are allowed and allow them record again.
Sorry for my grammar, English is not my native, but as a dedicated player i desperately wanted to share my feedback to things that concerns me.
