So if I click additional content and select Hugo Mercier I am told to follow "!" to play as him, but what if I want to not play as him? Only option now is to restart the game, but surely there must be a way to unselect Mercier?
Ok, so now I understand how this works. You made it a bit clunky though by "activating" the character in the main menu then making it possible to remove him in a custom game but still making it look like he is there. Confusing.
