    Idea to fix chat [PC]

Currently there are two different chat systems in the game. One is the tiny box in the top left of the screen that you acces with F3 that actually allows you to type something, the other is the set of predefined commands that you can acces with controller such as "hello" and "wanna race?". The problem now is that most people know their way around the second system, but have no idea that the first exists. Combine this with the fact that people do not get notified that someone typed something in the chat, and you get the beautiful situation of playing on a pc, but essentially being limited to a small set of predefined messages if you actually want to communicate while you literally have a working keyboard lying in front of you.

So here's my idea to fix this.
Since you already have this pretty chat system with speech bubbles and everything working in the chat command system, why not apply that to the typed chat too?
So when someone types something it appears above their car in a speech bubble and on the side of the screen just like the chat commands. That way people can type and everyone actually gets to see it.
Should not be too hard to implement considering most of the stuff is already there.

100% agree. When typing in public everyone gets to see what you wrote and when it crew chat only your crew members see your speech bubble. How hard can that be to make?

I already see room for exploits there though. Sure the devs could also then add an option to disable the text-popups, but then we're back to square one.
IMO, a good start to raise awareness for the chat's existence would be to simply have the chat be open on game start again (like it used to be) unless you change a certain setting.

Here is why I personally do not use the chat: I play on a controller. I usually sit laid back on my chair, legs up on a stool that is underneath my desk, keyboard all the way at my screen. If I were to type something, I would have to slow down, put my controller away, move closer to my desk/keyboard, open my chat, type and send the message, grab controller again and get back to my old position. And it's not fun for me (I sound lazier than I am), which I why I prefer the quickchat by miles. That one needs more options and better categorisation though (Why is there no "Sorry"?)

I too play with controller and I understand what you mean. i also agree that some elements are missing from the command chat. Like you said, you would also need to implement the standard set of chat features such as "ignoring/muting" and "private message" etc, like the ones present in the current typed chat. Anyway the idea was not to replace the current command system with a typed version, but to extend it so that both typed chat and chat commands will show up the same way. Since chat commands are translated to the language that the player selected (and typed chat obviosly will not be translated), maybe it is an idea to give the chat commands another color so that players can tell the difference and know that whoever they are speaking to might not speak the same language when they want to switch to typed chat. Oh and maybe also add a command for the command section of the chat called "i can not type" (or somthing similar) for cases like yours where you just dont want to get of the couch
