Enemy hitting your back does extra damage?

Yesterday, I've almost been downed in a fraction of second on a normal bounty.
I got in cover, pop green Chem and there was only a red guy.
How did he did that much damage in such a little time idk.

Does seem to be that way, when, conversly, the opposite if true of the enemy, you shoot them in the back pack and the damage they take is reduced (with the exception of weak points).
I guess you could say you must have a weak point on your pack as well and the extra damage is from the enemy hitting that, but it does stand out as odd.

Considering how EXTRA THICK these D2 backpacks are compared to D1 version which are less thicker in size, they should protect us more with reduced damage than cause us to take double damage.
