What was the thought process in going away from TD1 formula for Gearsets?

I can't remember what patch it was in TD1, but I remember when gear sets were changed to the following:

    2 pc: utility
    3 pc: damage
    4 pc: gear set talent
    5 pc: increased utility/damage
    6 pc: gear set talent

Not saying one way or another that TD2 should go to this formula, but I would like the to know the dev's thought process on not using this formula on current TD2 gear sets.

The more i see and play the more i think they didnt have a thought process on it. the guy who made the original ninjabag was in charge for the current formulas is my only thought on how its such a mess.

its just too bad the only way the could find to do it was to make everything boring. Dont get me wrong, i like the game but it leaves alot to be desired. The sets just arent fun.......at all. One month in i shouldnt be at a standstill in looking for gear but currently there just isnt anything I have to have, i can accomplish pretty much the same thing with random pieces strung together minus a bonus here and there.
