Finished Far Cry New Dawn, some impressions so far

    Likes:

    • The Landscape. Even with heavy dependency on level of detail, since far off things can plop into sight. Exception are the helicopter flights, where the distance LOD is getting rather obvious.
    • If the landscape, then of course level design too. No matter if rocks and woods or flower fields, or the bases and various buildings in the wild themselves, the love for detail is impressive and creates a believable world. Surely the setting reminded me every now and then on some MAD MAX movies.
    • The weapon design. A Plastic bag with some buffer material as silencer, or zip ties for attachment of telescope to the weapon, gives a true feeling of a cobbled weapon. The saw blade thrower is really cool too, even if a bit too powerful (especially since it can kill multiple enemies in a row).
    • The fights. Enemies going into cover, changing cover following your position changes, trying to surround you, communicating with each other and healing each other if possible, that gives interesting fast paced fights, where you have to use the environment to your advance, stay in movement and show fast reactions. Or if you see enemies in the distance and have not been discovered yet, you can take them out by some sort of long range weapon. Missing a bit the 'alarmer' type of enemy, which calls reinforcements (don't know in which Far Cry they appeared, 4 or 5 it was) if you don't take him out quickly. Maybe here reinforcements are automatically called by non silenced weapons.
    • The in game songs from the radios or the guitar players in Prosperity. First time for me the music isn't tapping on my nerves in a Far Cry game, since mostly oldies ('Hold on I'm coming', 'Working in the coal mine' or 'That's the way (I like it)' for example) or guitar folk classics. Gave me sometimes even a little tear, since it reminded me on how hard the people in this post apocalyptic world may have tried to bring back the good old times before everything went out of order. Only one song felt out of place, some song with a smurf-like choir which reminded me of the music style of a composer involved in the making of 'Beyond good and evil 2'.
    • The story. Two mislead sisters, a potentially dangerous cult leader with his power obsessed son, some intriguing highway men (Irving), everything inmidst some sort of civil war again, was an interesting story arc to follow.

    Dislikes (New Dawn specific):

    • Pubertal speech. Especially the wikibenia guy with his neverending 'what is an orgasm?' question I would sometimes liked to stick him his orgasms where the sun don't shine! But also everywhere else where NPCs were trying to be funny in a pubertal way it was more tapping on the nerves than really being funny.
    • Exploding tank trucks. Especially when on the road with help on demand, which you certainly don't do again when you want to deliver the tank in one piece to the base. Maybe even Ubisoft discovered it was difficult this way to get some tanks and preferrably spawned them in the vicinity of a base, typically about 250 virtual meters round the base. Once I barely delivered a tank into a base, but before being able to exit the truck I exploded (in the death scene I saw through the open gates of the base in the distance an enemy with a rocket launcher).
    • The special abilities given by Joseph Seed through taking a bite of a holy fruit. It's some kind of magic which one expects in a fantasy RPG but not in a solid ego shooter, where I expect solely bare metal weapons (or my fists) as a weapon. Hope they don't do something like this again in some Far Cry franchise games to come.

Dislikes (among several Far Cry titles, including New Dawn):

    • Repetitive conquering of bases or repetitive conduct of an expedition. Storywise and in terms of story progress I like the 'one time taken, forever taken' approach, so I totally avoided to reconquer a base on rank 2 or 3 (except one where I accidentally triggered it by looting the base). I disliked it in Far Cry 4 too. What was okay for me there (and here): When coming close to a base I had conquered in the past, there where randomly spawning enemies outside the base trying to attack the base, so I was asked to help my comrades defend the base. But it's not the same as totally reconquer a base, which was and still is a no go for me.
    • Killing animals for equipment. I want to kill human enemies in these kind of ego shooters, not playing a hunting simulator. As a matter of effect my rule of thumb was: If it doesn't attack you (rabbits, ducks or some cloven-hooved animals), don't kill them. Gathering plants or harvesting boxes and other containments is okay for me.
    • Playing coop. I know I'm probably quite alone with this dislike in the wide world of Far Cry lovers, but I prefer to play an ego shooter alone and without enforced socialisation per design. So even didn't use the help on demand (which is an AI controlled NPC) very much.

Btw. finished the game in 84 hours (comparison: played Far Cry 5 campaign mode about 123 hours, for completionist reasons. And Far Cry 5 Arcade Editor about 201 hours, for roughly 5 maps).

1st as for the abilities from the "fruit".. special abilities linked to Potions or something in in all far cry's.. it is NOT just a first person shooter.. it does always have some weird fantasy type stuff.. ever since 2 really started a lot with 3 forward. just has increased with every release.. ND took it a bit further.. but guess what? you don't have to use them..

Tanker trucks.. stop them by shooting the tires.. the driver exits and is an easy kill.. have a person type gun for hire with you.. but NOT hurk.. you and them take out the followers that sometimes are behind the trucks.. but leave their vehicle intact.. command your gun for hire to stand next to the other vehicle.. you get into the tanker and start driving then call the GFH to follow.. they will follow behind as a buffer for baddys coming at you from behind.. works 99.9% of the time to get the trucks safely to the out post.

as for how long game play is/.. I was very pleased for the price it was.. compared to 5.. I never expected it to be as long as 5 and it wasn't
5 I think it still my Fav all time FC and I started playing since FC1

Yes avoided to use the special abilities, although every start of the game I was friendly reminded by the engine to use C key for ghost and Z key for this other thing. In Far Cry 4 the thing giving you supernatural powers where the drugs from these junkie brothers I too avoided to use (the time lapse effect would even be irritating instead of helpful in fights).

Problem with this tanker truck thing for me being mostly on bare foot in the wild there: As soon as you have managed to stop the tank truck, the guarding vehicle behind the truck would start attacking you, and your gun for hire would start to attack them. Inmidst this fight most often your gun for hire blows up the tank truck. Happened for me with Carmina Rye throwing dynamite, Pastor Jerome with shooting burning ammunition from his shotgun or Gina Guerra with her heavy machine gun simply perforating the tank. And on your way back to the base if about 1000 virtual meters away and if then meeting a truck with a gun attached, you can watch your auto repair perk meter decrease, six shots from the enemie's truck gun and your tank truck blows up.

I load up Gina.. just before I take a tanker.. I give her the command to go after the followers.. this keeps her from shooting towards the truck .. I only had her accidentally get the truck once in 3 play through on hardest settings.. guess I'm just lucky. I did 1 time in one game get blown up by bad guys before I made it to the outpost.. but they had killed Gina who was following me behind in her vehicle.. first.

as for Jerome, Carmina ect.. you are right.. since they love incendiary rounds and Dynamite, they are a liability when taking the trucks.. just as Hurk is.. Nana I used 2 times she did "ok" The Judge is totally useless for anything, any where..

Game length wasn't a negative critics point for me, just an interesting fact. Since gaming magazine articles state 'Far Cry New Dawn' feels more like a big addon of 'Far Cry 5' (just like 'Far Cry: Blood Dragon' has been for 'Far Cry 3'), the shorter finishing time is okay.

My favorite Far Cry so far are 'Far Cry 2' and 'Far Cry 3'. Far Cry 2 because you were constantly underarmed and therefore the fights were almost always on a high level of difficulty, and the story really insane and deeply civil war like. And Far Cry 3 because of the revival of the tropic island setting from Far Cry 1 and the progression of the main character. Only game of the franchise I have never played is 'Far Cry Primal', sounds really like a hunting simulator spinoff for me. And Far Cry 1 I have never played through to the end, got stuck on a tanker ship quite early in the game.

you did not miss a thing Primal way sucked.. the only 3 things for 2 I did not like was.. the damn weapons jam's,, the fricken malaria, and only very limited jump points for such a large map..

like everything about 3 except for the timed multi-button press events for certain fights and to escape certain things..

4 as a whole I loved.. except I really did not like the arena much but had to do it many times so I could win the unlocking of the bushman..

5 would have been almost perfect if they had not had so much of the abducting.. and the worse of it.. the cull the heard asinine crap~

I am holding hopeful thoughts for FC6 lol

I've played & finished all the FC games. Each had features I really liked and others I hated. For me, Primal was a good experience overall. I liked the world, the reasonably balanced survival aspects, especially at the beginning, and it was satisfying to reach 100% completion. I loved FC2 when I played it but when I re-installed it in the interim between 4 and 5, the lower visual quality and the issues mentioned by crunc01 led me to quit after just an hour or two of game play. From that perspective I'd say Ubisoft is doing a good job of improving itsfranchises, making them more fun for a broader range of players and play styles.
