Far Cry : New Dawn .. a Review

Hi Ubi Forum goers, lurkers, posters and staff.

I regularly post a review on the Ubi Forums after I finish a Far Cry.. I'm on the Last Boss, which considering I played the whole game on iirc very hard, I am finding the Last Boss a bit challenging.. fair enough.

I have stretched a 40 hour (approx) campaign into 178h.. why?

    Pros

I loved the story! It made so much sense and grew everything I had experienced in the first game of FC5.

I enjoyed the mystical elements mixed in to both the story and character abilities.. and actually growing our character themself.

    Combat was keen as ever.

he Irwin missions I really enjoyed. who ever acted Irwin, imho he's a good comedic actors.. iiwy, I'd hire him again.

The AI.I was excellently programmed.. with only one major glitch of Horatio.. (when you were dying sometimes he wouldn't enter the building to save you) and the other one.. I suppose not a glitch?? Hurk being Hurk and just letting you bleed out.. in fact just he walked past me a few times haha

Nana.. was annoying at first, but by a few missions in she had earned my respect then the comedy started.. I laughed out loud a few times in the quiet of the night.

I enjoyed the perks of the preorder bonuses/gold edition stuff. The weapon upgrade system while allowing micro transactions was done tastefully, that if you want to earn it instead, it was fair.

The 3D mini-map made a welcome reappearance, I would love to see this have even greater scope; Zoom in further and be able to 360.

I appreciated the efforts made with the scaling and adaptive resolution. Saying that.. I would have enjoyed being able to control my main resolution which brings me nicely to..

    Cons

Okay.. so this is where, I didn't have fun. in seemingly endless cycles trying to fix the dumb as foam hat way your devs set up the res and refresh settings menu..
TBH through the 20+ hour of trying to fix that nonsense I wondered if they had done it out of spite. BUT then it's also in the other Far Cry games so.. no.

As a player.. specifically a PC player, I have custom resolutions to balance performance with quality.. this is SUPER IMPORTANT, it is one of the reasons I PC game.

FC wouldn't let me choose my refresh rate. Why on this earth you would have refresh rate categories and not just default to desktop if they match.. boggles the mind! Putting in refresh rate selectors shouldn't mean, 'let's lock everyone to 60' .

I even contacted your support telling them when you turn off v-sync in game it does *nothing*.. they sent me quite a trolling answer of: why don't you just turn all v-sync off in nvcp?
Which is a bit like the dare 'why don't you drink aftershave?'
As we all know.. turning V-Sync off everywhere makes you cards fans go nuts with noise and your card overheat.

I strongly suspect FC simply reads the EDID and then doesn't bother.. that's just lazy coding!
What? I struggle and struggle to get 3K at 85hz running for FC?
What? FC has given me more hassle about resolutions/refresh than ANY OTHER GAME IN MY 300 GAME LIBRARY??

    What if..

you did away with 'refresh rate' setting and moved the 'cap frames' to where that is now? Borderlands 2/TPS has an excellent version of this! That actually uses customs resolutions/refreshes.. and if I set my res to 1440p I can turn v-sync off and just use the frame cap .. and everything works because my desktop res is already on the refresh rate I wanted!

This doesn't happen in FC for me.. not even close! and has been an on going problem through every FC edition.

    Slingshot/Catapult

I mentioned this in my review for FC5, why would you give up a whole slot for this weapon.. it makes no sense! If you wanted to put it behind a wall, just make sure the player couldn't get it until Elite.. it should totally replace the rock throwing like it did in FC 4. That made sense.. it was sensible, with the way it is in FC5 and FC:ND, it's just effort wasted.

Real World Cost vs Play Value

Now, I made no bones about how I felt (iirc) about how the FC5 DLC was poorly handled..LOM was a 5 to 10 hour campaign that I stretched into 40h. And then you deleted my save game.. WOW.
I tried the Zombie one thinking it was a campaign.. nope it's not. So I guess I'm done with that one too.. eventually I will go back to the War one.. but I already feel cheated.

(all IIRC) I paid around £50 for FC5 and £20 for the season pass, I then paid £63 for the Gold Edition of FC:ND.. after sinking £133 ($174) into your two games.. what did I think?

I am *somewhat* glad I did for the experience, the two games are each a half of a whole, one doesn't make as much sense without the other..I have many compliments for the Story telling, the Voice Acting.. the production in general.. however let's go back to that £133.

It's a bit like buying airport bottled water.. it costs £5, you have to pay it because you are stuck..you enjoy it when your drinking it.. but afterwards you curse the airport. You tell your friends and family to curse the airport. You complain online about the airport and tell others to avoid it.. oh you could have not paid the money! just went thirsty.. but it had been a long flight and you needed to feel human again..

These two games make sense when they are together, if they sold together for £70 + all DLC I would say that would be fair. The way Ubi has it just now.. is frankly offensive.. incomplete and a price gouging of the most distasteful order.

I don't know what other games are bombing for yous over at Ubi.. but PLEASE DO NOT take it out on your FC fanbase!

    Dava

    -------------

I'm not down on Ubi having a second tier FC.. FC:BD was worth every penny of the £19.99 I spent on it..but I feel something has gone badly wrong over at Ubisoft management.. its all bout the dolla dolla bills yo!

Do you want to see next game? If you do.....don't complain about "dolla dolla". Game development takes money. Especially big AAA Open World Game. Or may be you want to see Far Cry as indie-game?!

Agree,crunc01! And let the following games will be only better and better! This old guerrilla song fits the game so well. May be one day whole Far Cry team will come on stage and sing it.....and the audience will sing along!
