And it seems like all the top players on the leaderboards are currently cheaters. It isn't fun to watch the top players at the moment.

I think we can all agree that the system used doesn't matter when going for the leaderboards. But I'm speaking of the skill range just below mine, where my friends are. It was a huge thrill to not **** up and make an error. And while still being "slow" (not really slow, platinum time limits were still pretty rough. Remember it's another skill range I'm talking about) it felt like they achieved something great.
The new system conditions a player to just run fast, while faults don't matter this much. The essence of Trials was always to play perfectly in terms of mistakes. Not anymore though and for the lower skilled players it will be enough to have the platinum medal. They will not go for a better run, even if the first one has mistakes.

The more I think about it, the more I actually hate the new system. The platinum medals had hard times at first, but what seemed even more impossible at first sight was the fact that it was asking for 0 faults consistently. Even on the extreme tracks. This is what made the platinum medals look legendary when someone new was introduced to them.
I checked a few random leaderboards.

Inferno V (Extreme) - first player with a Platinum and 1 fault is at #45.
Black Gold (Hard) - 1,169 players have Platinum or Diamond, all of them have 0 faults.
Lumber Party (Medium) - I got as far as #2080 before encountering a Platinum with a fault, which was getting very close to the cutoff time, and that entry had 2 faults and was a glitched run. All of the players before that had 0 faults.

I think for most tracks there isn't enough buffer space to take the 5+ seconds penalty and still get a Platinum, and even if that prospect does offend, that's what Diamond is for. I see what you're getting at, there are a non-zero amount of players who have faults and Platinums, I'm just saying it doesn't seem like there's very many of them. As Arzonyst said, going fast requires skill too. I'm sure most players realize the path to faster times and Platinum is fewer faults and probably zero faults.

I'm not a fan that Gold seems to be set too easy in this game, easier than past games. You can get bunches of faults and a slow time and still get Gold easily.

I personally have platinum on Inferno V with 6 faults. It seems like extremes are more forgiving, but i do seem to recall having some hard tracks with faults being platinum too.
