so if you're hit by SAM - it was your own fault. you knew the risk.

second, if i recall correctly you can fly high enough that sams will not target you. it'll make most of the planes\helos side quests easier.

third... unless you steer your aircraft to the side during flight you can almost always press E to get out and parachute to safety.
well he is taking risks doing the planes side missions "but i made a side mission where i had to deliver a plane"
(really not worth it

The SAMS in this game won’t detect you if you’re over about 800m above the ground. So if you can get high enough, you can fly over them without problems.

I think I've addressed side mission in my 2nd point...
and I totally agree that it's not worth it. just do 1 more convoy less risky, faster, maybe even more reward.

yeah i just noticed that it seems that road convoys respawn. but as i said to play in a realistic way , you just need to fly high, and do the Sarajevo landing (huge dive)

You learn where they're at, it's not very hard. They don't move or spawn in new places, but they do respawn.

So: avoid flying too much in Media Luna, Pucara, and Montuyoc. There are a few more around, but you start to recognize when one's targeting you and either fly low, or crash and get out quick if you have to. You can also dodge them pretty easily in small helicopters, but a plane or cargo helicopter? Forget about it.

If you have to enter Media Luna (it's the worst province for SAMs), fly through the canyon, not over it. You learn the route by practice and only practice. Silent Spade also involves flying through this canyon to avoid SAMs.

It's not ghost mode, it's not anything wrong with SAMs, it's that you need to learn where they are. That's the key.

Pretty sure there's several in Koani, several in La Cruz, and several in Flor de Oro. It generally has to do with province difficulty rating, but Pucara and La Cruz are pretty outstanding exceptions.

Me? I was able to fly every single plane mission to Media Luna without getting shot down (IN GHOST MODE), not to brag or anything. It just takes a bit of awareness of the area you're flying to. The one air transport mission in Koani involves flying to Media Luna, the worst part of it, just like the mission you have to do to find Boston Reed. You learn that canyon eventually, and it's not so scary anymore.

WHAT??!! I don't have to fly that stupid plane from Koani to the airstrip??!! You could have told me this MONTHS ago!!

You learn something new every day!

The thing that's always irked me the most about flying vs SAMS, is while it's perfectly logical for civilian planes/choppers to NOT have any counter measures e.g. jammers, flare/chaff dispensers, all of the UNIDAD aircraft should at least have dispensers, if not jammers.

The thing that's irked me the second most is there is no RMIN. Range Minimum--the minimum range from the missile launcher the missile can successfully acquire and track a target, AND the warhead fuze is armed and capable of detonating the warhead (that's so the missile can't go BOOM 3m/10ft from the launcher and skag the launcher and crew). RMIN varies from missile system to system---it'll always be well outside the blast radius of the warhead though.

BTW: Some good tips on NOE (Nap of the Earth) flying techniques (my preferred method)

Hm... I wouldn't say this game is realistic enough to even need to implement a Range Minimum on SAMs, lol. But yeah, I kinda learned that the other day- even if you get shot down doing the Koani airport mission, you can complete it however you prefer. Media Luna is a real piece of work to fly in, you have to master flying that canyon like an expert- a prime example being in Silent Spade. And I have, but I don't expect most people to ever get that hardcore about it, lol.

i stopped playing GM. too punishing to my taste. i recently restarted, then activated the tier thing. pretty fun so far. and i actually don't die more than in GM. my goal is to unlock the maximum items. then eventually buy few crates, if i miss cool things. but so far i pretty much got all the stuff i wanted. but GM is too punishing. lost a several dozens hours save, just because i didn't notice the unidad base floor i was on was wired, and let the bullets go through. that drove me mad

I have to agree, when I was playing on Extreme with no HUD or Upgrades, it forced me to find ways to steal choppers for the handful of missions they're really useful for to avoid wasting tons of time and road attacks from hostiles. I really only recall dodging SAMs on two of them, Flight Plan and El Muro, Flight Plan of course being the most difficult.

Both are completely optional to finish with aircraft though. I found that out some time ago about Flight Plan, and have mentioned it here more than once. If permdeath is a risk, you want to think about all the time it will take to get back to where you are in the game, not what little time you'll save flying.

Does anybody fly in GM for convenience, but immediately bail out if there's any chance of a missile coming?
