I'm not commenting at all on if this is a good system or not, I'm simply explaining why you see what you see.
The problem is this auto-gold-placement does not account for the players that achieved plat-diamond status last season..or even Copper. So, honestly, we could all be seen as Silver 4 initially, or even Bronze 4. What does it matter? They could take the % of wins per those 10 matches and plant your rank based on that.

I'm still of the thought that placement matches need to be limited. Maybe I was extreme i saying only non-rankers should be able to join, but at least lower the rank threshold to something around Silver. There might be more players that are placed in at an initial higher rank, but they will be lowered quickly rather than someone that's placed lower and having to win up their ranks.

Even a three stack at various levels of silver against a five man squad can make those silver 3’s and 4’s look like gpld and plats depending on the skill level you are playing with. I know mine and it ranges each season between silver and gold. However, the qualifying matches in ranked do not show what your teammates are nor does it give a clearance level. At the end of the match when they show the stats only then do you see the rank. I don’t think you ever get to see the clearance level In ranked mode. So technically you get teamed up with 4 clearance level 31 players that are ranking in for the very first time and I’m at level 349. That alone shouldn’t make sense. I understand that you have to take smurfs into consideration but you kniw immediately when you’re playing with a smurf at level 31 vs a noob at level 31. The play style is different. I know I’m in trouble the minute i see that a member of my team doesn’t know where the static cameras are on Consulate.

At the end of the day there should be a solo queuing and a squad based ranking system

The placement process for me has been a good luck/bad luck deal. Some (most) seasons I seem to go against mostly higher level players and place lower than I think I should. But, because you gain so many points for many games after placing, you should have no issues hitting the level you deserve/should be. Like this season, I placed in low silver but I feel I'm at least a low gold if not high gold player. And with in another say, 10 games, I hit gold 2 before me and my teammates started getting worked.

Yeah this is stupid. Every 3rd match I run into a squad in Bronze that has 2-3 silver and a couple of copper. MAKE THEM PLAY AT THE HIGHEST RANK OF THE TEAM!

All the games I've ever played that use a ranked system always did a full reset when a new season began. I have no idea why but there must be a reason for that.

I like it because sometimes you get stuck lower than you should be and the reset allows you to be placed in the proper level. It also gets rid of the boosters who are in a higher league then they should be.

I think the real issue is Mouse and Keyboard users in Console match making.

They hop into ranked most heavily in the 1st month of the season and then go hide in casual with their Platt and Diamond ranks.

The matchmaking in this game is truly wack. When I was level 17, I remember consistantly running into Platts in my lobby's.
