Possible Solution for Stuttering & Crashes (Nvidia)

After struggling with random stuttering and fps drops, before I went to bed last night I tested a few different drivers.

The latest one... 419.35 is a joke, don't use it. The GPU usage keeps dipping to around 10% and causes horrible fps lag until the game crashes.

    418.81 - Is significantly better.
    399.24 - Crashed on startup
    411.70 - Refused to install
417.71 - Currently testing, but has so far given me the best benchmark result.

So I've just noticed something with 417.71...
Unlike 419.35 and 418.81, when I set it to Max Performance in the Nvidia Control Panel... in game the GPU clock speed actually remains high (except when loading and fps is limited to 30).
The recent drivers no not do this for me, the clock speed is constantly going from 1936mhz down to around 1500mhz. So not surprisingly this is why my fps is all over the place.

So far since playing with 417.71 I have had one crash, but oddly I think that may have been caused by someone messaging me on Steam.

Since closing Steam I have not had a single crash and not a single fps drop or any stuttering.

    Utterly heavenly compared to 419.35

If you do try different drivers, remove them from Windows first, then use Display Driver Uninstaller to clean up drivers, preferably in Safe Mode.

Press Start button, type msconfig. Go to Boot tab, tick Safe Boot and Minimal, OK and reboot. (You don't need to go back into msconfig afterwards as it resets itself).

    Hope that helps

    Spec: i7 6700k, 1080ti and 16gb DDR4.

Edit: Just thought I would add that I have been playing at 1920x1200, all settings as high as possible in DX12.

Setting the 417.71 driver to Max Performance in the Nvidia Control Panel is not required, on Optimal Power it runs perfectly.

New drivers are clearly unable to sustain stable clock speeds... well for my 1080ti anyway!

    Nice one Nvidia

    Nice post swi7zle.

I agree it's not always best to jump right on to new drivers just cause they say there's optimized for that game, it's more that the word optimized means fixed a potential problem, one that might cause other problems on other systems.

Running 419.35 here cause it didn't produce any changes in my speeds across the board.

Highly recommend to anyone having problems a rollback is worth a shot.

Thanks for sharing with the other agents swi7zle

I appreciate you reaching out with these tips as a possible workaround for FPS issues. If possible could you try a clean install of the latest drivers and see if the same issues persist?

for me. tried this. crashes all the time. can't even really play the game as it crashes pretty much in the 10 to 15 minute range every time.

will try rolling back the driver.

    playing 1080p, ultra everything

    2700x, 32gb ram, 1080ti fe.

To get to Safe Mode, hold Shift when you Select Restart (Windows).
Then Select Troubleshoot, Advanced Options, See More Recovery Options, Startup Settings and click Restart. Select number 4.

Have you noticed low GPU usage??

Tested a few more drivers, 417.35 and 417.22 but both cause an irritating lighting bug.

    Back to 417.71 again now.

    Here's a benchmark of the 417.71 driver: https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachmen...317_09h06m.png

Reasonably low CPU usage. This is with all settings maxed out at 1920x1200.

What's your monitor refresh rate set at swi7zle?

It's quite an old monitor, so just 60 or possibly 59Hz.

But I have tried it on my TV at 120Hz.

    I should add...

The 417.71 driver, although it doesn't seem to be causing crashes (which is a nice change), after playing for around 3-4 hours it does become a bit stuttery and like the Private Beta it might need to be restarted.

But strangely, when I play alone I can play much longer without issues. It's mainly during coop that I need to restart the game after 3-4 hours... would love to know why?

Also, I'm getting an increase in frame rate of between 15-20fps on this driver

I can even run it at pretty high settings at 4k now because of the fps boost!
