They did say the 'year 1 pass' will be available to buy separate after launch some time.
I don't belive there is a way to upgrade, maybe cancel standard then re-order gold?

I had to cancel and re-order the Gold version. There was no way to "upgrade".

just refund the standard, and buy the gold

Can confirm, you need to refund and buy the other version you want.
Put in a support ticket asking for a refund, then it should only take a couple of days give or take.

The orders and game editions are different so they should be distinguishable to customer services, but it might be an idea to ring them or maybe see if you can get them on live chat.

I'll just wait till the year pass comes out, I wanted it more for the extra missions and such more than the early access. IMO they should release it the same day it comes out on march 15th for the non-gold users. Going to bug me being cut off from all the stuff like those 8 missions and the projects etc that are yearly pass holder only. I also dispise that they get stuff like this as it feels like a slap in the face after paying full price for a game.

You can definitely pre-load if you've purchased the edition you wanted. It shouldn't be effected.
