Just recruited Gina, then Hurk. Man talk about an unimaginative race track and easy mission to get Gina. Carmina is much easier to look at and listen to, and just as effective. Gina also ruins game skins. Hurk's mission was just weird. His dialog before driving the slow as a snail car out of the tunnel was actually more interesting than the mission itself, especially the bit about KIT. I sent Timber away just long enough to see how effectively Hurk handles an attack command. I thought the perfect opportunity was an enemy boat traveling laterally in front of us down a river. I had a perfect LOS on his rocket and it looked to be shot too much at the boat instead of leading it. It exploded what looked to be 3-5' behind the boat in mid air, but took out the boat. Since you're not supposed to get "Seeker" rockets until he's racked up at least 40 kills, I found this quite strange. Suffice it to say they probably give him an overly generous hitbox because he aims at instead of ahead of moving objects.

My favorite one is of course Timber! He can mark everything for me, including enemies and resources, which is very useful since I prefer to go stealth.
Gina Guerra is excellent for those who want to have a loud gun fire, great damage output when leveled up.
Pastor Jerome is the one I dislike most. He loves fire too much! I was burnt to death by him a lot when I tried to unlock his perks, and he killed me more times than the enemy did!
And Hurk, another annoying guy. No accuracy at all when he is attacking enemies (let alone his poor damage against human), but talented at blowing useful things up, including you and your animal skins.

Good character development. I didn't expect her to find like this. When I saw her first in New Dawn my heart sank. I felt sorry for her. She helped me a lot before collapse. She was good sniper and gun for hire before. Not loudmouth like some others.

Finally maxed out all companions. As most have said, some are slow to progress, others very quick. The ones that are very slow to progress are Hurk and Ghost. Hurk is pretty much useless as he can only be used overtly and is pretty bad at one shotting enemies despite having a rocket launcher. Once in a while he'll take out 3 in one shot, but it's rare. He also doesn't last long since his loud weapon draws fire from everyone. Ghost is about as useless as Jess was. Same slow to come to you, slow to nock arrows, and shoots fire arrows even at game sometimes. It seems like all they did was reskin Jess, but instead of being a talkaholic like she was, he sounds a bit like Darth Vader with a kennel cough. Granted he gets a bit better once maxed, but you still have to keep him on the move constantly or he'll get downed.

Gina on the other hand is quite the soldier. She's the only one with overt methods that has a high kill rate and survives pretty well. Hurk should be embarrassed to even mention her name. Nana is handy for taking outposts undetected, but she herself gets detected and killed too easily. Horatio is just a plain bulldozer when maxed. I don't like that they gave him God mode, but hey, it's Ubi. It IS odd though that it actually takes him longer to kill an enemy than it does Timber, despite those huge tusks and his Wreck-It Ralph MO. It seems it's mostly due to Ubi falling in love with that thrashing animation they gave him. Jerome is hilarious in that he announces his every move at the top of his lungs as if it's a missionary's public address. You'll be crouched at the bullet farm commanding him to kill one of the perimeter guards, and he's sneaking along crouched shouting "I'M GOING IN FOR THE KILL!!!" I'm like, OKAAAY captain obvious, thank God they at least can't hear your loud arse voice for some reason. Jerome is quite the pansy starting out, but once he gets his blessed bullets lights everything up. I was really surprised too how much fire his rounds put out. The only problem is sometimes he gets stuck in his own fire, so you have to keep him moving.

I keep coming back to Timber and once in a while Carmina for best companions. One is great for resource farming, enemy tagging, taking one at a time stealth kill commands, and fending off predators, the other just for conversation, looks, and she fights pretty well too, and often stealth kills when you're crouched. Overall companions in general seem more manageable than they were in FC5. I'm sure much of it is to do with the fact that you can only have one at a time though.

I have tried them all and I think you have it right. In the end I mainly used Timber and Gina. Timber is great for exploration and provides good (but not too good) support in other ways -- makes the game play difficulty reasonable. I liked Gina when I knew there'd be a firefight, e.g., in expedition missions where you can't rely on stealth. Carmina probably would have been just as good. I liked Nana but she seemed less versatile. Hurk is too irritating and not that effective. I thought Ghost would be a good fit but he wasn't effective at first and I didn't feel motivated to level him up to the max.

I just use Gina Guerra. I have her maxed out. She never runs out of ammo. Does everything that I want.

So far Timber is the only real useful one, with Nana a close second. I love all the characters, but as far as usefulness goes, it's only Timber for me. All the GFH get in my way a lot or jump the gun and start attacking when I'm trying to be stealthy. They don't trip about Timber running around them if I keep tabs on his aggression and he can run through a camp and mark them all for me without engaging in combat too early. He can mark materials that I might miss. Doesn't matter if the mission takes me down ladders where he can't go, his ability stays with me as long as he's equipped. He will engage with enemy dogs though so gotta watch out for that.

Carmina Rye was cool at the beginning. Until I found out she's been lying to me this whole time. LOL! "My dad said he was going to teach me how to fly when I turn 18. Hope he's able to keep his promise." (3 seconds later steals my helicopter to go to a way point I accidentally set while trying to do something else during combat. Then when I call her back, she doesn't want to land the f---ing thing and get out. She just hovers it above my head.) That and she keeps blowing me the f--- up with all that dynamite she aimlessly throws around in combat.

Pastor Jerome was cool, until he started setting me and the rest of the world around him on fire with his molotov and fire round shotgun.

Nana is good. She doesn't usually miss a shot. And she got a silencer! Kind of wished they had Grace as the sniper again, but learned how to f---ing use a silencer.

Haven't even really messed with anyone else yet. Just been using Timber, because I hate leveling characters I'm not even going to use, but know I need to just because. LOL.

Haven't got The Judge yet, but chances are I won't use him either.

All I need is for my targets to be marked. I'm very patient. So far most of my kills are from take downs, sniper rifle, or last resort shotgun. I waited to start using sniper rifles until I could build the Tier 3 version. All others were useless. Seems to be a theme in Ubi Soft games now. Lets have enemies survive headshots from sniper rifles and have them warn all their psychic friends where you're at. One thing that New Dawn does pretty good is that it sends the enemy horde to your last known position, so if you're able to cover some distance to a new hiding spot, you'll be able to lose the enemy if you hang low for a bit. Of course that's usually when wild kingdom takes over and you stumble upon the only cougar, bear, wolf, or other vicious animal within 1000 miles of anywhere, and they're right at your feet. LOL!

Carmina Rye is my favorite! Wish I could put her in shorty shorts and a halter top. She's getting kind of gamy in the chopper.

Carmina after she levels up is a best all around one for me.. I'll swap her for the sniper, dog (spotter) and machine gun girl depending on the case..
for taking out posts I usually use dog first and tell him to sit many places to spot all the enemies.. then swap him for either camina or machine gun girl... if I'm in the mood to try and snip the whole thing I and nana do it.. I ALWAYS use machine gun girl for taking the twins out mission.

I'm still pissed that while most of us in FC 5 were asking for the ability to have 3 of them at once.. and many of us found the random soldier you could hire better.. for this game they took us down to one at a time.. and NO random soldiers to hire.
