This is somewhat how I remember the first couple times I did this mission (although he didn’t conveniently come out into my line of fire like he does here)...

Some other times, knowing full well I will die I try different approaches that let me get some shots out.
LOL... I definitely did some of that last night... knowing I would die and going Rambo for as long as I could.

And I agree, not only is it not fun to sit and watch from the sidelines, I try not to sacrifice Rebels if I can help it - I typically only use them to balance the odds in defensive missions where we have a fighting chance.

Something was off last night, it almost felt like the Unidad were cheating. They knew exactly where I was sometimes as soon as I killed anyone (even if there were no witnesses or shot heard). It was super annoying. It doesn’t seem like you experienced this. Why me?!

BTW, this character can fly small planes, just not helicopters. Side story, after one successful mission, I decided to push my luck and take the comms supply plane. I took out the SAMs around the runway, but was flying so low to avoid other nearby SAMs that I hit a telephone pole near the road. LOL. I suck.
Well, they did come hunting me sometimes with that annoying approximate sense of where I was that NPCs always get even if they don't see the Ghosts directly.

But as I said I simply pulled back to a different area---like the hangars or the concrete tower---where I could see my previous location and then sniped whoever came looking for me. If you've never fired from a particular position the NPCs do not know to look there, so I had time to let them all show up at my old position, then pick them all off.

Oh, also I covered approaches to my position in the ATC building with mines for early warning in case I didn't spot someone coming for me, that helped once or twice.

I usually play it from the backside too. The trick I find is to if you can catch him on the roof of the HQ (see * below) and snipe from a distance. My rule of thumb is taking out him, the genny (jammer), the alarm in that area, and nearby tower snipers BEFORE breaking through the perimeter fence. If playing with Spotting and all Drone upgrades, you can actually place the drone just far enough away to avoid jamming and Spot the area he's in and order a sync shot. I did this at night on my Tier Level 1 Mission Replay run and that way the fight between the SB never even happened. It leads me to believe what really triggers the SB to arrive is when the player is within a certain distance without having yet killed El Comandante.

In my Extreme No HUD/Upgrades run, I again caught him on the roof, but went in just after 8AM, and belly crawled a lot to get to him, sneak killing a couple Uni's in the HQ. *Note that if you want to catch him on the roof, be really ready the first time you try the mission because I have noticed he often goes there right away the first time you get to the mission area. After that it can take him quite a while to go there, or you'll have to wait for that patrol scenario again, which can be a dozen or so attempts later. It all comes down to timing or patience. For file size (upload time) and video quality I was not willing to be that patient.

I also managed to do it this way more than once with a chopper circling the base, but it's far more risky, as foot troops are more prevalent. There was also at least one successful attempt where all my squad got downed when several Unis came out near the perimeter fence looking for us upon leaving. I then managed to pick them off whilst hiding in the bushes, heal my team, and leave, but it was hardly a guide candidate for best tactics. Hence taking out the alarm before you get past the fence becoming my preferred method.

I went in with an SRS and my FiveseveN, BASE jumping from the same place as in "SIlent Spade" except that I aimed for the platform at the end of the row of hangars.

From there I sniped all the Unidad around that supply plane, then killed the snipers in towers around the airfield, then took position on the ATC building and sniped down into the main base area throughout SB's attack.

Once things had calmed down a bit I just sneaked in past what few Unidad remained and checked on El Commandante's body at the CP (SB had killed him).

I was hunted a few times, but I just displaced amid the hangars and towers until I could locate and snipe any Unidad coming after me.

Probably the most helpful thing is to take advantage of the chaos of the SB attack and help even the odds in SB's favour a bit, especially killing Unidad's tower snipers. SB will still surely lose, but as long as you don't let yourself get spotted you won't have to worry about Unidad numbers ever increasing, and eventually the base will be quiet as a tomb.

I exfilled using the supply plane, a little icing on the cake, though I figure you won't want to do that since your current character has no piloting skills in your headcanon if I recall correctly. XD
Probably would have made a good video.

What difficulty level was this? Kinda surprised you didn't get a chopper circling and more foot troops with the alarm going off.

I finally did it. Thanks all!!!

I was able to do it lone wolf on Extreme with no HUD or Drone.

What worked was to start on the hill at the back of the base and snipe all the Unidad snipers and a little bird from over 400m. I was never detected and the Unidad didn’t cheat and home-in on my location. But the Cartel battle was over before I was done sniping. So I called in a Rebel Diversion to the front and that got them all re-engaged. Mean time, As I was finishing sniping, El Comendante came out on the balcony and I put a 50-cal in his ***. Then I called one more Rebel diversion for good measure (the first was wiped out, sadly) and went in. I didn’t encounter a soul inside the base. Was in and out in no time.

So I expect what happened the first time I played this where it seemed easy, is that I must have got lucky and charged into the base while the Unidad were still preoccupied by the Cartel.

BTW, I also tried a few attempts from the runway and ATC tower side but all three times ended up being detected by heli, snipers, or something that invoked the cheating Unidad swarm.

Sounds all good except for having to use those pesky Rebs, but whatever works. Like I said, sniping from a distance is key. It's rare that all the Unis surrounding the HQ go to the front of the base when SB comes. I find more often than not it's when SB comes in right of the bat with a minigun truck, which you can tell by it's loud sound. Sometimes the tank gets it. sometimes it veers off behind a building where it can't. For some reason that Uni tank always stays stationary by the HQ.
