Alright, so we played Ghost War today. Yes, me too (see explanation below)!
Let me say how much of a pleasure it was to meet and hang with you guys .. Ami (aka non-exist-ent, aka Gadget Maestro), AI BLUEFOX and MikeWeeks. It was good to laugh with you guys, even when I died, although I'm not sure if that is what is meant when someone says "to die laughing" .. hehehe
Thanks to you AI BLUEFOX for setting up the custom match for us, and for you and Ami both taking the time to explain things and "show us around" a bit.
Mike and I were both noobs. In the custom matches, we had our first kills against each other .. at the same time! It was fitting, and pretty funny when I thought about it later.
After playing a few custom rounds, AI BLUEFOX suggested that we could maybe try some quick play against randoms. You can imagine that I was reluctant and quite hesitant. All that I could see in my head was a snake preying on a mouse (me!), but then after discussing it, I learned that the whole problem of verbal abuse goes away if you play with a squad you know (even if just a little bit), so .. I gave it a chance .. and I had a blast. Seriously! I have to admit that I had a blast. And hearing Ami laughing so hard with the successful kills those gadgets brought was worth the price of admission alone.
So I've said it a lot that I don't play PVP because of the bad element that many people have also pointed out in their own posts. In this thread, we talked of that problem and we talked about solutions, none that convinced me to play. Playing Ghost War with a full complement of squad mates you know (even if just a little bit) is one solution that either wasn't brought up or that I may have missed because I was too focused on the fact that the bad element is always there and in your face. No matter now. From what I experienced today, this "solution" seems to help prevent having to deal with those abusive dicks, although they may still text their abuse, which is probably easy to ignore. The other squad seemed to be fine from what I saw. We played through what, three or four maps with them? I take it that they must have been enjoying it too. Kudos to them since we don't appear to have the time to say "good game" or "S!" afterwards.
With custom matches, you guarantee that there are only people you know in there - on both sides, but in Ghost War, there's no guarantee that you'll not run into an idiot random (or two or three) if you play with any less than three other people you know. So in my (new) experience, my suggestion is to play when all four squad mates know each other (even if just a little bit) .. or nothing.
Having said all that, playing with four squad mates who know each other may help bypass the abuse, but something still needs to be done to stop or prevent the abusers abusing those who only play solo or with less than a full squad. I still feel strongly about that.
The reason I'm posting this in this thread rather than in the "Forum Ghost War sign up" thread is because I feel that it's the fair thing to do considering the long discussions we've had here about what it would take to get people (back to) playing Ghost War. I have to give credit where credit is due and also speak about the positives, not only the negatives.
Would I play Ghost War again? If it's with a squad I know .. even if just a little bit .. the answer is "Yes"!
Before I go, my advice to those wanting to play Ghost War is:
1. Play with three other people you know .. even if just a little bit
2. Remember to breathe
3. Use a microphone .. playing without one is like you aren't there
4. See #2
5. Work together
6. See #2
7. Protect each other
8. See #2

Mongol Horde out.
