    How to use grenades effectively

I shouldn’t have to ask this as the old saying goes “close only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades” but I don’t think that’s true in this game.

Despite having thrown many grenades in this game, I don’t think I’ve kilked anyone (other than myself) with one.

It seems the enemies either jump out of the way and the explosion radius is so small you pretty much have to drop one down their pants to get a kill.

Is it just me or do others find grenades ineffective?

Grenades are very effective. I ought to know, playing on Extreme with no HUD or upgrades, you have to rely on them. Where you toss them matters a lot, and also whether the hostiles are alerted already or not.. They can also be effectively tossed out windows, as long as you keep the trajectory arc away from it's edge.

That said, had they at least added a cooking feature, even if part of a skill upgrade, would have made them loads easier to be consistent with, especially when the enemies are already alerted before tossing them.

I have been able to kill a few myself but truth be told, w/o a way of cooking them, I mostly use them to give myself a few seconds to get the hell away from the kill zone rather expecting to kill them as I know it will be a crap shoot when I toss one.

The other thing I find funny is how the enemy can toss a grenade 100+ meters away from you, while you are shooting back at them, and your bullets not doing much to them and with such accuracy that they land right on your feet and it only gives you time to die while attempting to run away... now, that's even better than the SB thug with the dual wielding Mac 11s. When I grow up, I want to be that guy.

Well, I sure would love to know how to do that playing on PC with Keyboard and Mouse when you have to keep pressing F4 for the gadgets to cycle through? Unless of course, they updated this and I was not given the memo.

Use them against enemies hiding behind vehicles for best results.

Otherwise, the best use of grenades is to flush enemies from cover, and shooting them after they dive away.

If you run from a grenade the enemy throws, why would you expect less from them?

I've learned a lot since the first frag I ever used killed (downed) me. I mean, we have to or we'll forever be killing ourselves. Best to leave that to the enemy.

    You did miss the memo!

What I did was change the key settings so that flashbang is first on 5, then grenade on 6. This way they are first and side by side. Then lure, which I find to be useless, and then C4 and mines, on 7, 8, and 9 respectively. Instead of cycling with 4, I just select the appropriate key, which I find is more accurate and quicker.

While that's not a bad idea at all, the lure however I've learned to use quite effectively under the right conditions.

For grenades - yes, against vehicles mostly; especially those that are manned. I also have used them when it's time to get out of Dodge in a hurry; get the bad guys to react to them even if there's no direct impact.

As mentioned previously, sure wish there was a cooking feature.

Can you please give some examples. It'd be a shame to waste a potentially effective tool, especially if I haven't been approaching it properly.

press 9 for flash and press 5 for frag no need to keep pressing 4 to cycle through

I use diversion grenades a lot in missions like "Operation: Watchman" and "The Truck Depot" and such where you are supposed to avoid detection and kill as little as possible or not at all.

When holding the lure you can see a white circle representing the sound it generates. Throw it just past enemies so that they are within that radius and have to turn around to investigate the epicentre.

Then you can just waltz on by since they are no longer watching the approach you wanted to take or milling about in an area you need to complete an objective in.

So the enemy-to-be-lured has to be within that circle in order for it to work? It has been a while, so I can't recall if I did it that way or if I did it just beyond them. If the latter, then this could be the reason why they have been ineffective for me. I'm going to have to try it again and do some practice.
