Stories from the DZ - good, bad or otherwise? (for Ubi-RealDude)

Since Ubi-RealDude seems to be looking for feedback on why we do and don't DZ (and my "Rogue police" thread sort of evolved to suit), I thought I'd start another that's more on topic.

    • Why do you go in?
    • What do you like about it?
    • What do you dislike about it?
    • Other?

So RealDude, here's my most recent story (fresh in my mind only because it happened this morning) that demonstrates what is probably the biggest "issue" with the mods, gear sets, etc. in the DZ, and another "feature" that makes it problematic.

I am extracting in DZ2. A player comes up and goes rogue to try to hijack me (the odds are 1v1 so I have no complaints or excuses). We spar a little, I drop a turret and when he's shocked pour gunfire into him and wipe him out. My extraction goes fine. He gets all toxic about me dropping a turret and that it's because I suck.

A little later I extract again and he's back. This time I don't drop a turret but outmaneuver him so that he's shooting where I am not, I come up behind him and easily down him. As you can guess, he's ranting about me shooting him in the back.

A little later I am farming solo (and switched to my DZ farming set, which is Nomad). I am clearing the toughest spot in DZ1 where occasionally three Elites spawn (I think one is named Cowboy) and all the others are Veteran NPCs. I am in the middle of it getting hit by multiple NPCs that are pretty tough, and he goes rogue behind my back and starts shooting me in the back, point-blank range. I still manage to outmaneuver him, kills three Elites AND him, then heal and finish off the Veteran NPCs.

He had all the advantage that time, but guess what? He was still toxic because my Nomad proc'd and I dropped another turret. I point out he was shooting me while I was fighting six NPCs PLUS him, but it falls on deaf ears. I am a crap player because I wear Nomad (and lots of other foul language).

So my question to you (and Massive in general): short of removing any and all mods, gear, etc. and going bare bones any time you enter the DZ how do you placate this kind of toxicity, where the very features that make the game unique supply and endless source of excuses and ranting?

I just realized I forgot the best part of that story: I was standing right outside a checkpoint typing a response to one of his rants, and apparently he respawned in that same checkpoint, ran out and saw me standing there typing and immediately went rogue and killed me - easily since I couldn't even fight back.

This one time he says "gg" in the chat.

    Too funny.

    Why do you go in?

Because a quest required me to go in, and a shield completion requires it.

What do you like about it?

Not a damn thing, it's toxic, and most players are so OVERPOWERED that a normal player dies in less than 5 shots.

    What do you dislike about?

    Everything, nuff said!

    Other?

This aspect of the game needs to SERIOUSLY be reworked. DZ is only fun for the toxic player base and farmers/uber players who have the gear tweaked to OWN anybody else that hasn't farmed/tweaked their gear.

As a casual, I only stepped foot in there to finish the "Investigate" quests, and to get my shield completed.

You can keep that area of the game IMO, to many toxics, farmers who one shot you, and campers who won't even let you into the zone.

Hope Div2 rethinks this, or I won't be touching that whole area of the map, just like now....

I love the DZ personally. You don't get the reactions from any other part of the game that you do in the DZ. But as funny stories go...

I play regular with my team mate Elixir and we don't really enter the DZ without us both there. About maybe a week back a few newer players and myself were jumped whilst hooking up in DZ1 by 3 (yes count em' THREE!!) D3 Rogues and a Nomad from hell to add salt to the wound. They just barley managed to cut the rope but had no time to steal the loot as Elixir and I LOVE to use a well timed Tac' x Survivor melt em' up and with the noobs running round like headless chickens we won out.

Suddenly one of the noobs grabbed ALL the loot instead of just his own, I know what a **** lol... And I couldn't resist. So being the arse I am we went Rogue and took sweet revenge.

But now were Rogue and need to run it off before the D3 trio and the Tank Nomad get some revenge of their own. So we run from one side of DZ 1 to the other, but we had been seen by two other players....

The timer runs down just as we come out from the underground car park near the abandoned Gas Station and as luck would have it there is an extraction going. As we approach the extraction (now no longer Rogues) a player runs out from cover and activates Survivor link, puts a full clip of house into my face and attempts several times to melee me...

Wondering what in gods name is going on the players team mate speaks and says something along the lines off "I must apologise for my friend, he only got the game yesterday, sorry he tried to kill you, I'm still teaching him".. Realising the players must have seen us whilst we were still Rogue and the poor noob not understanding he could no longer dmg me I had probably the biggest laughing fit I had at a game in years. This dude went full on FUBAR "Alt" bat **** crazy and didn't take a single HP... And to add the several melee attacks as well. His team mate also did say to his noob student "Look now people are laughing at you and you just wasted you skills" Which of course just added to the humour for me.

I replied by applauding his eagerness in the comment box, after I had wiped the tears from my eyes.

But this is what I love about the DZ. It doesn't matter how good you are or what your in there for that place can put you on edge, and I LOVE that!!

There you have it! As long as player is winning, player is happy.

I am crappy at pvp too and I don’t have a classy nomad to fall back too. Instead I have learn to dance and that evolution of my game is what brings me back to the dz in the main. the dz is not stale in my view provided I keep my game evolving. I go in to do that.

sounds like you already know how to move. Nothing wrong in dropping a turret to balance a fight imo. That’s one of those so called rules that player states is there to improve the game but really is ensuring player can win on their terms. Loosing is a point of learning and gives a need to evolve.

Knowing the map, the gear set, the weapon is key to playing pvp in the division.I also really like the complexity of the tech trees. The variation in player capabilities is broader than any game I’ve played before. Perhaps too complex and too broad but that makes pvp in the dz and the division unique and special.

I farm landmarks mostly and dodge npcs and rogues routinely. Sometimes I’m killed, but that’s because I was careless not because the game is flawed imo. I don’t do enough pvp to notice Cronus users but I have played a few one on ones where we were fairly evenly matched and that is what I like. Playing against the odds is fun too. Nothing wrong in loosing to a better player. So I learn to pick fights and play the best I can.

Player who cannt accept loosing is what I don’t like. Ubi listerns to its player base and the whining. I can’t help but think some of nerfs that pain so many have resulted from that. A real shame I missed the hex builds that sounds like the best period for the dz. would be great to have that back again.

FWIW, I cannot "dance" or zigzag like other players. I am too old and the hand-eye coordination isn't there any longer. When I "outmaneuver" it's usually rolling and moving between and around obstacles. Some spots are better than others for this, so it goes without saying I struggle in wide open spaces. Give me lots of cars, bus stops, etc. to go all around and I fare much better.

In the case I described above that's precisely what I did, and he was still thinking I was behind some other obstacle (and shooting in that direction) when I came up from cover...behind him!

Three answers. First, if a player is harassing you in game, being toxic, trolling, flaming, what have you... please don't hesitate to report that player's conduct. As that kind of behavior is something we try to discourage.

Second, games are great in part because we can put a bit of ourselves into them whether we like it or not. This is awesome, as it allows us to connect with characters, stories, and other players, but it can take a somewhat sour turn in PvP experiences where there is a winner and, by necessity, a loser. Being on the losing side sucks as much as it does precisely because we've put so much of ourselves into that game/character/setup. It can functionally come across as the game saying, it's not just that your character/team/faction lost but you, the player not the character, lose as well. Not a great feeling, yea?

Third, personally I usually just mute them. It's more immediate and direct way of shutting down someone who is being toxic towards you.

Though I will say, sounds like you're playing well.

Thanks for making this thread, by the way. Always important to get varied personal experiences.

But is anything actually done for this kind of behavior? Can something be done?

I've seen evidence that when I supply a video of blatant cheating the player is banned, but it's not clear at all to me if they are not cheating but just ranting (voice or text) what can and/or would be done.

    YW by the way. :-)

We do investigate everything that is sent our way and dish out punishments as needed based on the Code of Conduct... This includes cheating (as you know) as well as toxic behavior and harassment.
In short: Yes, something can be done.

Personally I enjoy running around in the DZ. I do runs pretty much daily and always make it a point to hit the DZ for a least a bit. I mainly go to farm DIV tech, clearing LM's and going for the occasional supply drop. Sure I've had my fair share of getting melted by rogues but that doesn't bother me. The nature of the DZ is that it's dangerous and unpredictable. I think the DZ adds a very unique aspect to the game that always keeps things interesting. I've heard people saying its upsetting because they can never extract anything without getting ganked. This has not been my experience. I'd say about 90% of my extractions go off without any rogue activity at all. As far as the 'toxicity' of some players...I've come to D1 after an extensive background in playing WoW. I'm very familiar with this. WoW is notorious for high level players camping low level zones just for the sheer fact of restricting other players ability to do whatever it is they wanted to do at the time. See...that's the key...'at the time'. Griefers get off on the fact that it frustrates you. If you don't give them that satisfaction they get bored and move on. Don't get me wrong. I'm not giving them a pass and saying to just 'suck it up and move on'. I think that kind of gaming is counterproductive and can ruin your whole experience. My point is...if you don't want to or unable to engage a rogue when you respawn just sit in the safe house for a few then dip back out and check. Don't run back the same direction every time. Nearly every single time I've been dropped by a rogue they don't take my stuff and I end up getting it out. This is not always the case but when that happens I just cut my losses and run off to something else.

No amount of reports or complaints or bans is EVER going to fully remove all the toxic players from any game. I suppose what I'm getting at with all of this is don't give the bullies what they want..which is attention. They feed off of it.
