I’m not surprised, but I share your frustration. I used a variant of the SR-25 that was advertised to be silent and in testing, it was detected at exactly the same range as a regular suppressed SR-25.
I recall reading that detection range for weapons is based on class, not individual weapons. So all suppressed snipers are detected at the same range. All suppressed ARs are similar. It’s anither sad statement about the over simplification of weapon mechanics in this game and misleading stats and descriptions.
Ever since I learn that the enemy does not hear you at 100+ I no longer use a suppressed sniper rifle, it just does not make any sense and if I need to take a baddy down at less than 100m I just use my P416 or M4 suppressed and on a pinch... pull my suppressed pistol and be done with it. It seems like in this game, shooting is all about making concessions and forcing yourself to still have fun with the annoyance of it all.
Yeah it just comes down to realizing that you are playing a game. A game in which the function of suppressors is totally divorced from reality.Originally Posted by GiveMeTactical Go to original post
Any high powered rifle that you throw a suppressor on, you will still be able to hear out to 800m easy. Up to a km if conditions are right. The suppressor does give you the advantage of the sound being(or seeming adirectional). Though the people you are shooting at may figure out the general direction based on the sonic boom of the bullet.
Out over a km all they have to go on is the sonic boom of the bullet.
Also suppressors speed the bullet up(good for accuracy and dmg) bad for sonic boom effect. The zero on your sights might be slightly affected though there are ways around that on modern rifles and sighting systems. Though honestly, with real suppressors there is no reason to ever use your rifle without them as they aid in recoil management, as well as increase range, dmg, and accuracy.
Now in game we have these things they call suppressors which(depending on class, which makes some sense) makes the rifle report undetectable to ridiculously low distances. They have the down side of also making the bullet slower and do less dmg(without the dmg perk anyway). So in the world of game mechanics they are "balanced". You get a super power in exchange for some limitations.
I'm not sure there is a way to make them more realistic, at least not that gamers would enjoy.
That's the way I go if I'm sniping. Although I usually play "classic" (weapons sergeant) Nomad with unsuppressed LMG, suppressed SMG and suppressed sidearm. And the LMG is only used when the **** hits the fan.Originally Posted by GiveMeTactical Go to original post
But yeah, for the sniper rifles you should stick to minimum 200 metres away from your target if you're going unsuppressed and guaranteed you won't be compromised - unless your positioning is bad and you decide to snipe enemies from/near to a road. :P
