Mentors Guild Community Discussion - Your AC Memories

    Hi all,

This Friday, December 21st, the AC community will be celebrating the first ever #ACDay! That's why we want to hear about your AC memories.

MAKING SURE THE FANS ARE HEARD

As part of a set of new Community Initiatives, we'd like to give opportunities to the community to give more direct feedback, and will now host weekly discussion on specific topics that relate the Assassin's Creed Franchise. These community discussions will take place on the AC subreddit, the Official Ubisoft Forums, and on the Mentors Guild Twitter. These discussions will be open for 1 week. The threads and responses will be shared directly with the Assassin's Creed Community Development team, who will then pass that info on to concerned parties within Ubisoft itself.

While the Mentors get opportunities to speak directly with the creators of Assassin’s Creed and frequently communicate with the Community Development Team, this is not the case for every fan. We want to change that. We want fans to have their voices heard directly, in the same ways the Mentors do. These activities are a step towards meeting this goal. If you want Ubisoft to see what you have to say, this is the place to do it.

    THIS WEEK'S TOPIC

    Topic:
    Your Assassin's Creed Memories

Description: To celebrate the first ever #ACDay, we want to hear your AC stories. What makes AC special to you? What has the series brought to you? Have you met new friends or even romantic partners because of AC?? How long have you been part of the community?

    QUESTIONS TO CONSIDER:

-How old were you when AC came into your life? Has your view of the series changed over time?-Which AC game was your first? Is it also your favorite?

-If you can name one, what was the scene or moment you realized you were "hooked"?

-Why did AC in particular capture your attention? What made it special to you?

-Has Assassin's Creed changed your life in a significant way? How?

-Has AC inspired you to create? (Videos, fan art/fic, cosplay etc.) Feel free to share links to your creations if you have any!

-Has AC inspired you to travel or research history? (Show us your holiday pictures! )

-In your view, what are the factors that explain AC's phenomenal success worldwide?

-Do you have an impressive AC merchandise collection? Show it off!

-Has AC taught you life lessons or philosophies that you consider valuable?

-As a player, do you feel you have changed AC in any way? In other words, do you feel as if your feedback and suggestions are being heard and valued by the development teams?

-Feel free to add more if you want!

    REMEMBER:

While these discussions are meant to allow for honest and raw feedback directly from the community, the best way to ensure your voice is heard is to be constructive - be critical of the process, not the people. Be specific with your criticisms and suggest tangible solutions and improvements.
We hope to see active participation and that this will be a successful way of getting the fans' voices truly heard.

Which AC game was your first? Is it also your favorite?
Brotherhood. It was my favorite but time moves on and gaming evolves. It is my Favorite older AC game and always will be.

-If you can name one, what was the scene or moment you realized you were "hooked"?
4 things hooked me - but Liberating Cities was the first, recruiting and the Recruit Ceremony. Oh, and Rome. And the Soundtrack. And Ezio/ & early scene w/ Catarina which was impressionable.

-Why did AC in particular capture your attention? What made it special to you?
I mainly played FPS and thought I'd try something different than shooting in a game. Ezio's character, that it was in Rome in a past era and being an assassin.

-Has Assassin's Creed changed your life in a significant way? How?
No. Just my gaming tastes... helped me branch out from shooters.

-Has AC inspired you to travel or research history? (Show us your holiday pictures! )
The farthest I got into researching was actually being interested enough to watch a few historical documentary/specials on AC related games or Suggestion topics for future AC locations.

-In your view, what are the factors that explain AC's phenomenal success worldwide?
Mainly how unique it is as a game concept - going back into history and seeing the culture depicted in beautiful graphics to enjoy
That they're set specifically in many other Countries would interest them imo.

-As a player, do you feel you have changed AC in any way? In other words, do you feel as if your feedback and suggestions are being heard and valued by the development teams?
Yes I have always felt and seen that our collective feedback was listened to - maybe a little bit more today than previously but yes and I esp. noticed in it in ACR. I remember new things they added in ACR were complained about and I was posting that some of those things were requested & that no matter which way they went, they were criticized. It was at that time that I realized it was always going to be that way whether they listened or not - becuz then the WAY they did it was viewed negatively or it wasn't enough.
(Although I do admit, the Den Defense system was def. a problem and fairly warranted disfavor).

Alot of the much earlier constraints were complained about and Ubi listened to them even when it profoundly changed the earlier AC format of perfectly reliving a memory with desynching if you didn't accomplish the mission correctly.

I think people confuse being heard with expecting what they specifically want being done, but Ubi isn't going to or be able to do everything everyone requests and imo that's a good thing in many cases.

When Assassin's Creed came out I was 46 and teaching high school Science. The game was a blast to play and gave me a connection to some of my students. There were many days during free time that my students and I compared notes on how we were playing. I played most of the AC games up until AC 3 and stopped playing as other games took over my need to be stealthy. This past summer I picked up Origins and really got back into it. I spent my time away from the game doing research about the game and reading the Book of the Dead. I would have to say that Odyssey has become my favorite. I hope that in the future the guided tour comes back as Greece has a wonderful history. When I was a "military" brat, I lived in Turkey and toured many of the ruins there and in Greece. It makes me understand that the all cultures have a great history that we should celebrate and learn to embrace their contributions to modern society.

This is a fantastic topic, and I can't wait to read everyone's responses!

-How old were you when AC came into your life? Has your view of the series changed over time?-Which AC game was your first? Is it also your favorite?
I was 16 when the first Assassin's Creed came out (whoops, I think it was "M" rated...).

I remember that earlier that summer, I watched gameplay of it and was amazed at how fluid and free the climbing was. Pretty sure that was one of, if not my first, YouTube viewing experiences, too.

I really liked AC1, and I remember staying up and passing around the controller on New Years Eve 2008 with my friends. Unfortunately, I was not able to finish the game, because a bug at Arsuf prevented me from progressing through that mission. It wouldn't be until right before ACII's release that I'd pick up a new copy and try again.

-If you can name one, what was the scene or moment you realized you were "hooked"?
Honestly, even though I picked up the games each year and enjoyed them, I'd say I wasn't really ever fully hooked until the Nexus with Altair/Ezio/Desmond. I still view that as the peak of AC storytelling.

-Why did AC in particular capture your attention? What made it special to you?
I'd say this question has two different answers. This captured my attention.

What made the series special, though, was the connected story across eras of history.

-Has Assassin's Creed changed your life in a significant way? How?
    Absolutely!
I've made lots of friends in the community, and have had some great experiences meeting some of them.

I've learned a bit about history along the way.

Most importantly, it's been a great way to bond with people that I know. I introduced my siblings and my then-girlfriend (now wife) to the series, and it's something that we can all enjoy together.

-Has AC inspired you to create? (Videos, fan art/fic, cosplay etc.) Feel free to share links to your creations if you have any!
    A little bit.

I'm a board game nerd, so I've written some articles on what I'd like to see in an AC board game,

I also ran a playthrough on the AC Cryptozoic board game a few years ago, when I was part of a YouTube channel.

Then, I've written a few articles about the new miniatures game that is coming out in a few years (hype!).

Most recently, I dipped my toes into fan fiction for the first time for Creedmas 2018.

-Has AC inspired you to travel or research history? (Show us your holiday pictures! )
Inspired? Absolutely. I just haven't gone and followed through on it yet.

I have been doing a little bit of reading lately, though.

-In your view, what are the factors that explain AC's phenomenal success worldwide?
There's something for everyone. On these forums, we always have fresh new fans who may have not previously been interested in the series, but the new setting or gameplay has drawn them in. I know the series has changed a lot over the years and some older fans don't particularly like that, but there's no doubt that this constantly shifting and evolving identity has helped make the series attractive to as large a group as possible.

-Do you have an impressive AC merchandise collection? Show it off!
Mine's not impressive, and I always forget to get a pic of the whole thing, but here's a bit of it

-Has AC taught you life lessons or philosophies that you consider valuable?
I don't want to sound too cheesey, but maybe?

I think it may have helped me gain perspective that there are many sides to issues, back when the White Room confessions showed villain motivations really well.

-As a player, do you feel you have changed AC in any way? In other words, do you feel as if your feedback and suggestions are being heard and valued by the development teams?
I definitely know that the words we write here are brought to the developers, so I have no doubt that the time I've spent on these forums has helped shape the series.

Oh, and that time over four years ago that I pretty well predicted Odyssey, including setting, characters, naval, and even sort of the Mercenary system. I'm sure it was a coincidence, but it's still pretty wild.

-How old were you when AC came into your life? Has your view of the series changed over time?-Which AC game was your first? Is it also your favorite?
Mid twenties. I had heard about AC before that from my brother who played it, but never played it myself. Got Black Flag on sale and really liked it. Then played Origins. Then played Ezio collection, and Syndicate. And now Odyssey. Black Flag was amazing. Origins got me hooked to the series, and is my favorite. Ezio collection was good. Syndicate was a disappointment, sorry. Odyssey is amazing and is on par with Origins for me.

-If you can name one, what was the scene or moment you realized you were "hooked"?
Booting up Origins for the first time and watching the majestic open world of Egypt. I have always been fascinated by ancient Egypt and the pyramids, and this was just a treat. That got me hooked.
Afterwards, when playing revelations, I really liked ' Requiescat in pace Altair' line.

-Why did AC in particular capture your attention? What made it special to you?
Massive open world set in an ancient setting. I am always fascinated by the ancient history and civilizations, and it is always a treat to go back in time and explore and interact with how people used to live back then.

-Has Assassin's Creed changed your life in a significant way? How?
I have been spending alot of time on this forum discussing the game along with having long playthrough sessions, which are impacting my work.

-Has AC inspired you to travel or research history? (Show us your holiday pictures! )
No holiday pictures. But planning on visiting Greece in future.

-In your view, what are the factors that explain AC's phenomenal success worldwide?
The diversity of protagonists. The series started with a middle eastern character with an arabic name, moved on to an italian protagnist. Then americas, and france, then london had both male and female characters. Afterwards ancient egpyt (african background) and now greek protagnists (male and female).

Also the stealth action genre is amazing and gives variety to both types of players who either want a strategic or a brute force approach.

Also the diversity of protagnists means, the settings are diverse too. Hence people from different areas can relate to that.

-Do you have an impressive AC merchandise collection? Show it off!
Planning on buying the replica of spear of leo. Never have owned merchandise of any game in past: not just AC, any game.

-Has AC taught you life lessons or philosophies that you consider valuable?
""Nothing is true; everything is permitted"" LOL!.
But on a serious note, AC shows you that there are no right or wrong answers or decisions in life. Everything has some positives and some negatives, and at the end you have to choose the option, or make a decision in life, which is 'less bad'. And that 'less bad' thing might be 'more bad' for some people, and in that case, it is fine that other people choose different than what we choose.

-As a player, do you feel you have changed AC in any way? In other words, do you feel as if your feedback and suggestions are being heard and valued by the development teams?
I reported some bugs, and the got fixed. Also kuddos to the moderators on the forum who are so active conversing with users and sharing their feedback about any issues or bugs.

-How old were you when AC came into your life? Has your view of the series changed over time?-Which AC game was your first? Is it also your favorite?

49 years old when I first played AC1 in 2007 but 25 years of gaming prior to that. My view has always been to judge each game on its own merit, comparisons never end well. The series has evolved and I have actually relished seeing what could be a soft reboot of AC (it probably will not be, but the games are excellent and the new direction is fun, fun fun).
Although I started AC1 I never finished it (I should relinquish my AC star player award in shame ) but it promised much and my next full game was AC3. As I had missed AC2 to ACR I was not confined by a love of everything Ezio and as such, my un-blinkered eyes could bathe in the glorious wonders that was AC3. The game is epic and before I played Odyssey if you had asked me my favourite, it would have been AC3, but Odyssey is everything from every great game I have played all rolled into a roller coaster ride of a game.

-If you can name one, what was the scene or moment you realized you were "hooked"?

The reveal of what Haytham was... such a great and unexpected twist.

-Why did AC in particular capture your attention? What made it special to you?

It was the first game where there were blurred lines between who is good and who is bad. We steal, but we kill thieves, we murder but we kill murderers.... can we justify what we do because of what we are aiming for?

-Has Assassin's Creed changed your life in a significant way? How?

Unity has made me friends globally. We've met and played other games in multiplayer and have learned a lot about life in other countries from each other.

-Has AC inspired you to create? (Videos, fan art/fic, cosplay etc.) Feel free to share links to your creations if you have any!

I used to make forum signatures for people but they were slowing the forum down too much I think.

-Has AC inspired you to travel or research history? (Show us your holiday pictures! )

I have read a lot on the subject of the Knights Templar.

-In your view, what are the factors that explain AC's phenomenal success worldwide?

Open world, notable characters, places and events. Puzzles and a very generous campaign game. (I do love value for money )

-Do you have an impressive AC merchandise collection? Show it off!

Not really, Although Billy from customer services Ubi Newcastle sent me some nice stuff (top man, funny as well)

-Has AC taught you life lessons or philosophies that you consider valuable?

I think I am more able to see the bigger picture, to put things in perspective more. I don't sweat the small things.

-As a player, do you feel you have changed AC in any way? In other words, do you feel as if your feedback and suggestions are being heard and valued by the development teams?

Yes, absolutely. But I'm careful to try to understand that suggestions cannot just be done like flicking a switch, sometimes the workload would simply make it a non starter.... But Origins is a prime example of how feedback and the forums have helped shape the direction of AC.

That was a huge one for me, too. Haytham is still one of my favorite characters in the series, and that scene is definitely part of the reason why.

Sorry to chime in again after answering the Q's, but I wanted to reply to this specifically from Strigoi
AC3 was my least Favorite game of the series... but I admit that I was so sad that Ezio was gone, that the entire game felt hollow and dead to me. It wasn't the game's fault, I just couldn't enjoy it becuz it was like I was at a funeral.
I couldn't be fair to this game to give it any chance. One day I might try to replay it since I've been able to bond w/ other characters since Ezio. (Bayek & Alexios). =)

I saw some footage of Origins over a year ago, and the gameplay alone was enough to convince me to purchase my first AC title. It exceeded my expectations--and within only a few hours I had the HUD off, Nightmare mode on, and restarted Bayek's story so I could reset the default shield to level 1, and reset any points I put into his Breastplate. I wanted a true 1 HP, hard-hitting build, and the devs set me up with a game and a world where I could play the way I wanted.

Needless to say I was anticipating Odyssey like no other title, even RDR 2. I enjoy CSGO, PUBG, etc.. and no doubt Red Dead will introduce a much needed change of scenery to shooting games when it finally comes to PC. But Origins should not be compared to fps or tps--it's a massively fun, huge open world centered around exploration and dynamic movement, melee, and bow combat.

Incredibly, Odyssey has sailed past Origins, building upon every quality the series introduced in 2017. For me, these two games represent definitive open world adventures. Origins had fantastic, nuanced combat, and Odyssey has added still more layers to these systems.

A big thanks to the people who worked on the melee and bow combat--whose idea was it to add dodge and parry modifiers to melee combat animations? Entire weapon sets gain utility they might not seem to have at first glance! This is excellent. You've essentially transformed this game, with passive, push-button mechanics in previous installments, into an open world Tekken or SoulCaliber!

Melee combat is built around targeting, footwork, hitboxes, and movesets. Please, continue to expand and refine this stuff! I love it.

And it's clear you designed this game, and the previous, with No HUD, Souls-like experiences in mind. Love the Falx of Olympos! And even how you can see Adrenaline flashing on Alexios, hear abilities come off cooldown, or the fire pits on the Adrestia lighting up. There is almost zero need for HUD, ever. Fantastic.

Origins and Odyssey both have such wonderfully realized worlds. The devs have set remarkable standards for imaginative sandbox experiences.

And another thanks for not allowing the map to be 'completed,' a la Far Cry, etc etc. I love the combat, love starting trouble for the Athenians, scumbag bandits, and dirtbag cultists. You wisely kept the war going indefinitely, and I could not be happier with such a design choice.

Things that I would like to see in the future:

-Even more enemy variety and challenge.
-True freedom of movement. Reduce or remove 'sticky,' on rails movement.
-Just add a Jump button already. C'mon bro.
-Let us choose, mid-air, when we want to cling to a wall or surface. If no input is given, let us fall.
-An extra helping of nasty in New Game Plus. Forget Nightmare: let's have a Hades Mode.
-While you've spoiled us with all the HUD options, allow us to turn crosshairs off independently of everything else.

Thanks so much for these two titles. They came out of nowhere late last year to supplant just about anything I was playing or looking forward to. Well played Ubisoft.
