Battle Royale-styled mode (Curse of the Shattered Island)
THE CURSE OF THE SHATTERED ISLAND
"Aye there, small fry." An old man says as he calls in your direction. He looks like grizzled old man with more salt in his beard than you've likely ever had on your plates. "Have you not heard the news? A shattered island has appeared in the middle of neutral waters." He says as he gestures for you to sit near him. "I know how the young bloods want treasure, and you've got a spark of fierceness in you... so maybe you can do what my crew and I failed to do." He says as his gaze gets lost in his ale before returning to you. "This island... it was an island that once contained treasures, but was apparently destroyed by the native's gods for their greed and lack of devotion. However... some say that their treasures weren't destroyed, merely sank." he says, considering the mug in his hands before downing the rest of it.
When he finishes drinking, he slams his cup down onto the table, there's a quiet fury in his voice now. "But there's a curse I should warn ye about. When too many come for the treasure, the gods will become wary of greed once again and summon the same storm that destroyed the island." He says as he looks up to the ceiling, as if remembering the fearsome winds and the black clouds. "A perfectly still hurricane that will only fly above the island, but its eye will close and shift." he says as he looks to you once again "But that's only if you make it past the blinding fog first."
At the pause of speech he laughs before calming himself "Ah, did I forget to mention that? The gods supposedly protect the island with that fog. Only a certain class of ship can move in and out without a guaranteed fate at the bottom of its reef." He says as he recalls the other failed attempts to sail into the island that him and his crew saw as they sailed in. "Too big and ye're certain to run aground the reef and crash through the channels." The image of a frigate stuck partially out of a water flashes to the mind. "Too small and the waves will eat ye alive." The image of a schooner getting overturned by a rogue wave from the fog is easy enough to imagine.
"But then again, maybe none of these curses and protections exist. Maybe the gods of this island don't either... that's up to you to decide." He ruminates as the barkeep arrives with the man's dinner, a roasted mutton leg. "What isn't up to you decide though, is that others will be after the same treasure that you are. Y'see, the real danger isn't in the fog or the storm. It's in the cutthroat nature of those seeking treasure, and if you aren't prepared to fight..." He takes a large bite of the mutton that he practically tears off the bone, easily chewing and swallowing it. "...they'll tear you apart."
He looks you in the eyes now "So, small fry, are you willing to brave the Curse of the Shattered Island?"
This is my idea for a Battle Royale styled mode within the game. The idea is that 12 ships enter into a large map consisting of channels large enough to barely fit three ships between them, open areas where around 6 ships could all be fighting at the same time without a guaranteed risk of collision, and perhaps large areas that have sandbars, restricting ship movement but potentially allowing for volleys to be traded at a distance. I can't imagine the exact layout, but I'd imagine that these are some examples of areas within the Shattered Island
The premise is still the same as most Battle Royale modes. Everyone has the same kind of ship and you have an empty cargo hold. As you sail around, you can find wrecks from previous battles here, they will have a mixture of weaponry and treasure. Your ship has a limited amount of space so you have to decide what to keep and what to dump. There is a reward for winning, however players who sunk with treasure get to keep half of it, thus providing an incentive to hold treasure and not just weapons.
The storm that begins restricting what parts of the map you can be in is very similar to other battle royale games. You take gradual damage if you're caught within the storm, albeit one bit of a difference is that there's always enough room for at least 2 ships to move around each other and also when the storm has reached its smallest circle, when a new circle is chosen, a pathway opens up to it as opposed to forcing players to traverse through the storm to reach it.
Also, another difference is how players enter the map. Rather than dropping in from the air, the players are presented with a map of the shattered island and pick a section of its outer seas to enter in from. Players are not shown what the others have selected, possibly allowing for multiple ships to enter the same area, with hostilities unable to start immediately due to a lack of weaponry.
What do all of you think about this idea? Feel free to let me know below.
