I haven't seen any analysis of this elsewhere, so in the interest of determining what I'm in for, I did this analysis of how many Tier Points it actually takes to progress to Tier 1.
Here's the raw data (please let me know if you see any errors):

Here are some interesting facts:
NOTE: All points mentioned here that are required or gained are normalized (in other words, what's actually required or earned BEFORE your Tier Point bonus is applied).
There are 105 story missions in the game (97 if you don't have the Peruvian Connection and Unidad Conspiracy)
An average story mission will earn you anywhere from around 500 to 1500 points (see calculation below). Let's say on average it's about 1200 points per story mission.
Getting to Tier 30 requires 90,914 points (after accounting for tier bonuses) which is about 75 missions.
Getting from Tier 30 to Tier 20 requires 151,289 points which is 126 missions or more than a complete replay of the entire campaign.
Getting from Tier 20 to Tier 10 requires 244,470 points which is 203 missions or playing through the campaign twice more.
Getting from Tier 10 to Tier 1 requires 346,123 points which is 288 missions or nearly playing through the campaign three times more.
Hence, to get from Tier 50 to Tier 1 you effectively need to play the campaign about 7 times.
I'm now at Tier 20 and this has solidified it for me, I have no interest in playing the campaign another 5 times to get to Tier 1. LOL... In my opinion, the whole Tier 1 thing is absurd.
Note on mission point calculations:
The points on story missions ranges from about 380 to 1050. I would say a crude average is probably around 750 points, although most people focus on the missions worth 1050 points. On top of that, you earn something like 25-30 points for every kill. Most missions or bases have maybe 10-20 bad guys, so on average, that's 15 bad guys for another 450 points. Average for a mission is therefore around 1200 points. Of course some will be worth more and some less. YMMV.
I think your calculations are off. I just went form Tier 8-9. These are the missions I completed:
Koani-
Boston Reed.
Truck Depot
Convoy
Espiritu Santo-
Advisor
Gold Rush North
La Santerra
La Santerra Chapel
Soldiers of Santa Muerta
Occoro-
El Emisario
Remanzo-
Quinoa Factory
Mule Doctors
Also, because I enjoy it Operation Arch Angel part 1 and 2.
I might also point out that killing in stealth generates more points. CQC generates more points. Grabbing and knocking out I believe is the highest point count you can get per enemy. So I try to kill all of my enemies CQC if I can, and for certain undetected.
The weekly challenges also give large amounts of Tier points. Just saying.
I'm sure that individual mileage will vary on this... I was just using very average calculations. Your mission selection is the nearly identical to every Tier Mode Tips article I've come across. Those are among the fastest and highest rewarding missions of the lot. The problem is, you need to replay these same missions over and over and over again.![]()
In addition Unidad kills in all categories generates more points. Plus just spotting (tagging) and collecting any resource. IOW, simply continuing to interact with the game world generates points. And indeed, the weekly challenges add to the total if you use a Tier character. All this outside any points generated by completing various story missions.Originally Posted by Bone_Frog Go to original post
Even the missions that reward the most Tier Points give you peanuts in comparison to the Points you get from marking and killing enemies, especially if they’re stealth and/or headshots, as was pointed out.
Grinding Missions is definitely the wrong way to progress through Tier Mode. If anything, the only reason you should replay the game is for the variety, not the Mission Points reward.
The last part is the big one. Over twenty thousand for the three solo challenges. I’m at Tier 5 and although the progression at this level is slower, it’s not ridiculously so.Originally Posted by Bone_Frog Go to original post
Whilst that’s true, you don’t have to stick to these. Throw in a few random missions and take different approaches to keep things varied. I started out just repeating the same missions for quick progression, but thanks to a discussion with someone on this forum, I changed my approach. I put the focus back on enjoying the experience with the Tier progression as a byproduct.Originally Posted by VirtualRain1 Go to original post
I agree it’s not that difficult, but it’s time consuming and mind-numbingly tedious to play the same missions over and over and over again. I don’t understand the interest in doing this... why do it? Is there any sense of satisfaction that you played the same missions a hundred times? Is there really nothing better to do? It can’t be for the rewards as those are extremely lame... you will get better items from Prestige crates along the way. In the end, after achieving Tier 1, what do you feel you have that you didn’t have before you started Tier Mode?Originally Posted by poku123 Go to original post
So as an observation this is the fourth, maybe fifth thread, you have made about how you don't like Tier Mode. What induces you to keep playing it if you don't enjoy it? Is there some sort of constructive criticism that you are trying to give Ubisoft that I'm not seeing here?Originally Posted by VirtualRain1 Go to original post
